PS5 controller stick drift means the controller reports movement while an analog stick is untouched. Confirm that input first, then try Sony’s reset and software-update steps. If drift continues, the cause may be debris, worn joystick hardware, settings or software, or a circuit-board fault; the right repair depends on whether you have a standard DualSense or a DualSense Edge.
Confirm that the controller is drifting
Leave the stick centered and untouched. If a character moves, a camera pans, or aim shifts on its own, the game may be receiving directional input from the controller. Check more than one game if possible: this can help distinguish a game-specific setting or behavior from an input the controller reports more generally.

Try Sony’s reset and update steps
Reset the DualSense controller
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller.
- Find the small reset button on the back of the controller and press it with a small tool. Hold it for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the console using the official USB cable, then press the PS button.
Sony recommends this reset sequence for DualSense controller issues. If the console is usable, also check that its system software is current. Sony says DualSense controller device software updates are delivered with PS5 system software updates; a manual update option is available at Settings > Accessories > Controller (General). If the problem remains after these steps, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs. Eligibility, cost, warranty coverage, and turnaround depend on the controller and the reader’s region; check Sony’s service information for your location.

When cleaning may help
Cleaning is worth considering when visible grime or debris appears to interfere with the stick’s full movement. iFixit’s V2-specific cleaning procedure is aimed at drift caused by gunk or grease, not worn hardware. See iFixit’s DualSense Controller V2 cleaning guide.
Do not treat cleaning as a guaranteed fix: it cannot restore a worn joystick or repair a faulty board. The cited procedure is specific to the DualSense V2, and the available guidance does not establish a particular spray or liquid as Sony-approved. If you are unsure about the controller revision or how to clean it safely, use Sony’s repair route instead of opening the controller.

Choose the repair path for your controller

DualSense Edge: replace the module
Sony’s Edge instructions cover replacing a stick module that does not work properly or has stopped working. Use a module intended for the Edge; it is not a replacement part for the standard DualSense. Follow the safety and installation cautions in Sony’s controller support information and the DualSense Edge instruction manual.
Standard DualSense: assess the soldering repair
For persistent drift likely caused by a worn joystick, iFixit documents replacement of the standard DualSense joystick. This requires intermediate soldering skills and suitable tools, including the ability to remove the existing component. Confirm your controller revision and replacement-part compatibility before proceeding. If you do not have the skills or equipment, seek professional repair or use Sony’s service route. How to decide what to do next
- The tester shows no unwanted input: investigate game-specific settings or behavior before opening the controller.
- Drift appears to follow debris or restricted movement: consider only a cleaning procedure that matches your controller model and revision.
- Drift persists after reset and update: hardware wear or another internal fault is possible; choose the Edge module replacement, a soldered standard DualSense repair, or official service according to your model and repair experience.
