How to Choose an E-Reader: Screen Size, Lighting, Formats, and Buttons

Choose an e-reader around the books you read and how you get them: compare screen area, light controls, file and DRM support, buttons, and accessibility on the exact model.

Choose an e-reader by matching its screen, lighting, controls, and file workflow to what you read and where your books come from. A compact screen can suit reflowable novels and everyday carrying; extra screen area can make PDFs and illustrated pages easier to view. Before buying, confirm the exact model supports your files, required accessibility features, and local library workflow.

Start with what you read

Screen size is a trade-off between portability and visible page area, not a universal ranking. A flowing-text novel can be reflowed to fit a compact screen, while a PDF or fixed-layout page cannot always adapt as freely. More screen area can show more of those pages at once, but the diagonal alone does not guarantee a better reading experience.

Kobo’s US store currently groups devices into 6-inch and 7-inch-or-larger categories, and its Sage product page specifies an 8-inch HD flush E Ink Carta 1200 display. These are examples from one maker’s current range, not a complete survey of all brands or markets; check the current listing for the model and country you are considering. Kobo eReaders · Kobo Sage

  • Mostly novels and portability: consider a smaller device if carrying comfort and one-handed use matter most.
  • PDFs, comics, or illustrated books: consider a larger display if seeing more of a fixed page is important.

Check the light—and whether it changes color temperature

An adjustable front light and warm-light control are separate features. Brightness adjustment changes the screen illumination; color-temperature adjustment lets you shift the light’s tone. If you read in dim settings, check for adjustable illumination. If warm light is a requirement, verify that the precise model offers color-temperature adjustment rather than assuming every e-reader does.

Kobo describes its Sage’s ComfortLight PRO as providing brightness and color-temperature control. Amazon’s Kindle help explains screen-light adjustment on compatible devices and notes that some can adjust it with hardware buttons. Features vary by model, so consult the current device-specific specifications or help page. These product descriptions do not establish that warm light prevents eye strain or improves sleep. Match file support to where your books come from

Think through your actual book sources: a device’s store, a local library, or files you already own and transfer yourself. A format appearing on a compatibility list does not mean every file with that extension will open; DRM and the way a book was obtained can matter.

If your books are EPUB or other personal files

Kobo lists EPUB and EPUB3, as well as PDF, MOBI, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, CBR, and image formats for Kobo eReaders. Kobo also explains that some EPUB or PDF books arrive as ACSM files because they are DRM-protected. Check the specific source’s instructions and the exact e-reader’s import process before relying on a format name alone. Kobo: Supported file formats

If you use Kindle books or documents

Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing format comparison says Print Replica books are not compatible with Kindle e-reader devices. It also states that Print Replica lacks text resizing and screen-reader compatibility. This is a limitation of that format; it should not be treated as a complete description of every Kindle file-import route. Check current Amazon documentation for the particular content you plan to read. Amazon KDP: Choose Your Book Formatting

If you borrow from a library

Library borrowing can depend on your country, library, and the method that library uses to deliver books. Confirm that your local library’s workflow works with the exact device before buying, rather than inferring compatibility from general format support.

Decide whether you want page-turn buttons

Some readers prefer a physical button to tapping the display. Button availability is model-specific: Kobo’s current comparison page includes page-turn buttons as a feature filter, but that does not mean every Kobo—or every e-reader of a particular size—has them. Kobo eReader comparison

For a device you are considering, check the precise product listing for buttons and how they work in your preferred orientation. If hand position or reach matters, assess the layout in person where possible; the available sources do not establish a cross-brand ergonomic winner.

Check accessibility at both the device and book level

Device settings can help with readability, but the format of an individual book can limit what those settings or assistive tools can do. Kobo documents adjustments for font size, margins, and line spacing. Amazon’s Print Replica documentation, by contrast, identifies a format that lacks text resizing and screen-reader compatibility. Kobo accessibility · Amazon KDP format comparison

If you rely on larger type, layout changes, or a screen reader, verify the whole chain: the device’s accessibility settings, the book format, and the workflow used to obtain and open the book. A device’s general compatibility with a file type does not by itself establish that the specific book will work with your needs.

Use this pre-purchase checklist

  1. List your main reading material: flowing-text books, PDFs, comics, or illustrated and fixed-layout books.
  2. Choose a practical screen trade-off: compactness for carrying or more area for fixed pages.
  3. Confirm lighting: adjustable brightness if you need it, and separate color-temperature control if warm light is essential.
  4. Trace your book workflow: identify store purchases, local-library loans, and personal files; check import steps and DRM for each source.
  5. Verify controls: check whether the exact model has page-turn buttons and whether their placement suits you.
  6. Test accessibility needs on the specific format: confirm text and layout options, as well as compatibility with any assistive technology you use.

Product features and availability can change, and store offerings and borrowing workflows differ by country. The cited Kobo store and product pages are US pages; the Amazon help source is UK support. Check current regional documentation and listings for the model you intend to buy.
