To make an e-reader battery last longer, lower the screen light, turn off Wi-Fi when you do not need to sync or download, and shorten the time before the device sleeps. On Kindle, enable Power saver if your model offers it. The exact controls vary by model, and manufacturers do not provide a universal estimate of how many extra hours any one change will add.
Which settings save the most battery?
Lower the screen light
Built-in lighting uses power. Amazon recommends lowering the light setting on Kindle models with a built-in light; Kobo brightness controls vary by model, and not every Kobo has ComfortLight. Turn off wireless between downloads
Wi-Fi is useful for downloading books and syncing reading progress, but you can switch it off when you are not using those features. Turn it back on when you need to connect. Amazon recommends switching off internet when it is not needed, and Kobo says disabling Wi-Fi extends battery life: Kobo Wi-Fi and battery instructions.
Reduce time awake when idle
Put a Kindle to sleep when you finish reading; Amazon says a brief press of the power button does this. On Kobo models with the relevant controls, go to Settings > Energy saving and privacy and choose shorter automatic sleep and power-off intervals. A shorter interval means the reader spends less time awake when left alone.

Use Kindle Power saver if available
Some Kindle models offer Power saver under Device options. Amazon describes it as a low-power sleep mode. Availability depends on the model, so do not assume the setting appears on every Kindle.
Why might an e-reader battery drain quickly?
Setup, updates, and book indexing
A new or recently set-up Kindle may use more battery while it downloads books, updates, and indexes content. Amazon explains that indexing enables book search but affects battery life. After a large download, leave the Kindle connected to power for a while so indexing can finish before judging its normal battery performance. Amazon’s Kindle battery guidance covers these temporary demands.

A cover or magnet may wake it while stored
If a Kobo loses charge in a bag or while sitting unused, check that its SleepCover is positioned securely. Kobo warns that a shifting cover or nearby magnetic accessories can wake some eReaders. Keep the device away from other items with magnets and see Kobo’s battery and charging troubleshooting steps.
Charging may be the issue, not battery use
If the reader charges unreliably, try another USB cable. Kobo says a replacement cable should be capable of transferring data. Its support guidance suggests a 10 W, 5 V adapter for troubleshooting compatible devices and cautions against high-wattage fast-charging adapters; adapter advice is model-specific, so follow the instructions for your reader. Kobo’s troubleshooting page also recommends checking for software updates.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Identify when the charge drops. Note whether it happens during reading, while idle, during setup, after a large download, or while charging. Setup downloads and Kindle indexing can temporarily increase battery use.
- Reduce routine power use. Lower the light, turn off Wi-Fi when it is unnecessary, and shorten automatic sleep time if your model supports that control.
- Check for accidental wake-ups. If the device drains while stored, secure the cover and move it away from magnetic accessories.
- Test the charging connection. Try a suitable data-capable cable and consult the manufacturer’s instructions for adapter compatibility.
- Contact the manufacturer if the problem continues. Follow support guidance for your specific model. For example, Amazon’s safety information for Kindle (10th Generation) says its lithium-ion polymer battery should be replaced only by an authorized service provider; do not treat that model-specific statement as a rule for every e-reader.
What battery life should you expect?
Rakuten Kobo says an eReader can last up to two months, depending on how frequently it is used. That is a broad manufacturer claim, not a guarantee for every model or reading pattern. The official guidance cited here does not establish a controlled Kindle-versus-Kobo comparison or a reliable number of extra hours saved by any single setting. Your result depends on the device and how you use it.
