Start with the symptom: check app quality and server logs for buffering, then check tuner detection, signal, scan, and guide mapping for missing channels. For playback errors, note the exact message and use the Plex Media Server logs to narrow down the cause.
Why is Plex Live TV buffering?
Plex identifies two broad causes of most buffering: the network cannot sustain the requested stream, or Plex Media Server cannot transcode it quickly enough. Check the viewer’s network context first: is the app on the home network or connecting remotely? Then make sure the quality selected in the Plex app is appropriate for that connection and the playback device. Plex says streaming quality is controlled in the app, not on the server. Check the stream quality before changing hardware
Lower the app’s streaming quality and retry the same channel. If playback improves, the requested stream may exceed what the connection or client can handle. On a fast local connection, increasing quality may let Plex avoid transcoding or only remux compatible content. Some Smart TV and PlayStation apps may also hit memory limits at high bitrates, so a lower app quality setting can help even when the server is not the problem.
A faster internet plan is not a universal fix for OTA Live TV: first determine whether the stream is local or remote and whether the requested quality is the limiting factor. Likewise, do not replace a server simply because playback buffers; check whether Plex is transcoding and how quickly it is doing so.

Use the server log to test for a transcoding bottleneck
- In Plex Media Server, enable verbose logging temporarily, then reproduce the buffering during the affected stream.
- Open the Plex Media Server log and look for the transcoder’s
speed =>values while that stream is active. - Interpret the value as Plex describes it: below
1.0means the server is not transcoding fast enough to keep up;1.0is real time, and an average around1.3or greater is sufficient for the attempted stream.
These are Plex’s diagnostic thresholds for the attempted stream, not a general performance benchmark for every server. If the logged speed is below real time, CPU limits or a low-powered NAS can contribute. If the speed is adequate, investigate the connection and client quality setting instead.
Why are channels missing from my Plex guide?
Separate three cases: Plex cannot find the tuner, the tuner does not receive a station, or the station is received but not represented correctly in the guide. OTA Live TV requires a compatible tuner and antenna; the exact tuner must also be supported by the Plex Media Server platform and region. Plex’s current tuner and antenna guidance, including its compatibility chart, is at Supported DVR Tuners and Antennas.
Confirm tuner detection and run a fresh channel scan
- Check that the tuner is connected and visible to Plex Media Server. Confirm that the tuner model is compatible with the server platform and region using Plex’s current compatibility information.
- In the Plex DVR setup or channel management screens, review the signal type, country, and postal code, then run a channel rescan.
- Review the selected program-guide lineup and the mapping between channels found by the tuner and channels in the guide. Plex explains channel scanning and mapping in its DVR setup guide.
A tuner can receive a low-power local channel even when guide data is unavailable for it. A missing guide entry alone does not prove that the tuner has failed.

Check OTA reception when stations are absent or weak
If Plex detects the tuner but particular stations are missing, choppy, or unreliable, check antenna placement and the signal path. Reception depends on local channel availability and the distance and direction of broadcast sources, so no single antenna type or placement fixes every location. Plex says any digital antenna can work; amplification may improve reception in some situations, but it is not a guaranteed remedy.

- For a network-based tuner that disappears or is intermittently detected, give it a stable local IP address, such as by setting a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Keep the tuner’s firmware or drivers current.
- Make sure other software or devices are not using the tuner at the same time. Plex expects exclusive tuner access; concurrent use can cause tuning problems or failed recordings.
Why does Plex say the transcoder exited due to an error?
Record the exact message, the affected client, whether the problem occurs on one channel or several, and whether you were watching live TV or a recording. Then check the Plex Media Server logs and determine whether the session attempted a transcode. The words in the error help direct the next check, but they do not by themselves identify the cause.
When the error points to transcoding
Plex documents Windows messages such as “Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.” In a rare Windows-specific case, Plex identifies Malwarebytes Premium Web Protection as a possible cause. Treat that as a lead only when the operating system, installed protection, and server logs support it; it is not evidence that other security products or platforms cause the same failure. When the message points to the tuner or antenna
Plex also documents “Recording failed. Please check your tuner or antenna.” For a channel-specific failure, or one that names the tuner or antenna, check signal quality, tuner detection, firmware or drivers, and whether another device is occupying the tuner. Weak OTA signal can disrupt both live viewing and DVR recordings.
Check eligibility and distinguish OTA from Plex’s free channels
This guide concerns over-the-air broadcasts received by a tuner attached to Plex Media Server, not Plex’s separate free streaming channels. Plex says its free channels cannot be used with the DVR feature. Its FAQ says OTA Live TV viewing is available without Plex Pass when a compatible tuner and antenna are connected, while DVR recording requires Plex Pass; availability and terms should be verified against the current Plex Live TV & DVR FAQ.
Plex’s Supported DVR Tuners and Antennas page, modified February 3, 2025, listed Plex Media Server v1.16.1 or newer as the minimum for DVR functionality and advised using the latest release. Because supported platforms, apps, tuners, and requirements can change, check the current compatibility list for the server platform before troubleshooting an unsupported setup. Plex’s FAQ also says encrypted or DRM-protected channels are unsupported and guide-data coverage varies by country and provider.
