Switching from Google TV’s default home screen to a lightweight launcher changes how apps and content are presented—and may change what happens when you press Home. It does not automatically remove advertising from streaming apps or guarantee faster performance. If you mainly want fewer personalized recommendations, Google TV’s built-in Apps only mode is the simpler option, with trade-offs of its own.
What changes when you replace the Google TV home screen?
Google TV’s stock interface brings together apps, content discovery, viewing suggestions and, on some devices, live or free content. The tabs and features you see depend on country, language, device and availability; not every TV or streaming device has the same layout. Google says the ordering and content may reflect factors including location, selected services, prior activity, popularity, editorial choices and market requirements. Its Android TV Help documentation describes the goal as presenting content Google thinks users will enjoy and purchase: How Google TV & Android TV work.

A third-party launcher replaces that home-screen presentation with its own app layout and visual choices. How much control it gives you depends on the launcher. It may also take extra configuration to make the remote’s Home button open it. A different home screen is not, by itself, proof that Google features or recommendations inside individual streaming apps have changed.

| What matters | Google TV default | Lightweight launcher |
|---|---|---|
| Home-screen content | Apps, recommendations and discovery features; tabs vary by device and region. | Depends on the launcher’s layout and features. |
| Personalized recommendations | Part of the home-screen experience; Apps only mode reduces these. | The alternative home screen may present apps differently. Do not assume recommendations inside streaming apps disappear. |
| Sponsored material | May appear; Apps only mode still shows sponsored content and popular-title teasers. | Check the launcher itself. Replacing the home screen does not establish that ads within other apps are removed. |
| Customization | Some settings and app ordering are available, with options varying by device. | Options vary. Projectivy advertises configurable layouts and visual themes; FLauncher documents categories, app ordering and wallpaper support. |
| Google features | Available according to the device and settings. | Availability after replacement depends on device and configuration; the sources do not establish universal feature parity or universal loss. |

Try Apps only mode if recommendations are the main problem
Google TV has a built-in Apps only mode that shows installed apps instead of personalized home-screen recommendations. It is a limited simplification, not a fully ad-free mode: sponsored content and teasers for popular titles remain. Google also says that Search, Google Assistant, Watchlist features and the ability to mark titles as watched are unavailable while the mode is on. Apps can still show their own recommendations, and Web & App Activity may continue to influence recommendations.
Google’s support page describes home-screen settings and the mode’s limitations: How Google TV & Android TV work. The exact settings path can differ by device, so consult your TV or streaming device’s menus rather than relying on a universal sequence.

What Projectivy and FLauncher offer
Projectivy
Projectivy describes itself as a customizable Android TV home-screen replacement, with configurable layouts, icon packs, wallpaper options and color schemes. Its official site directs users to install it from Google Play and set it as the default through the app’s settings: Projectivy. These are the developer’s listed features, not independent measurements of performance or compatibility across every Google TV device.
FLauncher
FLauncher is an open-source Android TV launcher whose maintainer lists customizable categories, app ordering, wallpaper support and support for sideloaded apps. The project describes itself as early in development and warns that it may be unstable. Its setup documentation discusses remapping the Home button with Button Mapper as the safer or easier route, as well as an alternative that disables the default launcher: FLauncher project and setup documentation.

Check Home-button behavior before changing the default
Installing an alternative and making the remote use it are not necessarily the same step. Depending on the device and launcher, you may need to select a default or remap the Home button. Disabling the system launcher is a more consequential change than simply installing an app, and behavior is not established for every model and software version.
FLauncher’s documentation says its ADB disable commands were tested on Chromecast with Google TV only. It warns that results may differ on other devices and notes that, on Chromecast with Google TV, disabling the default launcher may stop the remote’s YouTube button from working. Treat that as a project-specific, device-specific warning—not a prediction for every Google TV remote. Check the instructions for your exact model before disabling system apps, and prefer a reversible remapping approach if you are unsure.

Which option fits?
- Choose the stock launcher if you want Google TV’s integrated discovery and the default Home-button behavior.
- Try Apps only mode if your aim is to reduce personalized home-screen recommendations and you accept the features it disables and content it retains.
- Consider a third-party launcher if you want a different app-focused layout or visual customization and are willing to check compatibility and configure the remote.
Neither Google’s documentation nor the launcher project pages cited here establish that a third-party launcher is measurably faster or uses less memory. Treat “lightweight” as a description of the intended interface, not a verified performance result. The practical comparison is about presentation, customization, feature access and setup—not a proven speed advantage.
