If a currency sign disappears from a Playwright product screenshot, first determine whether it is missing from the price element’s text, rendered as a blank or replacement glyph, or present in the browser but different in the captured image. Those symptoms point to different causes: application data or formatting, font coverage or loading, and capture timing or environment differences. Playwright’s screenshot settings cannot supply a glyph that the selected fonts do not contain.
Identify where the currency symbol disappears
Check the same price at three stages: the element’s DOM text, its appearance in the browser before capture, and the resulting screenshot. Use the same browser engine and runtime environment as the failing test where possible.

- Absent from text: inspect the product data, locale-aware price formatting, and template. A screenshot option cannot restore text the page never produced.
- Present in text but missing in the browser: investigate the selected font, its fallback, and whether the relevant font file loaded. The chosen typeface may not contain that currency glyph.
- Visible in the browser but wrong in the screenshot: check for capture-state changes, delayed font loading, and differences between the local and CI environments.
Check the price text before changing screenshot settings
Inspect both textContent and innerText on the price element. The former helps establish what text is in the DOM; the latter reflects rendered text and can differ because of layout or hidden content. Replace the selector below with the one used by your product page:

Verify the browser’s font and glyph coverage
If the character is in the DOM but appears blank, as a box, or as a replacement character, inspect the page’s actual font stack and the font file used for the price. CSS can name a preferred family while the browser falls back to another font for a particular character. Verify that the intended font is served successfully and includes the symbol being rendered.
Check the page in the browser engine used by the test before capturing. If the glyph is already wrong there, the problem is not fixed by taking another screenshot or changing the screenshot format. Review the relevant CSS font-family, the network request and response for the webfont, and the available fallback fonts in the test runtime.
Wait for fonts when loading is the demonstrated problem
A delayed or failed webfont request can make the test capture a fallback rendering. During diagnosis, inspect document.fonts and the font requests in the browser’s network log. Wait for the relevant application and font-loading work to finish before capturing; do not treat a generic delay as proof that the correct font loaded.

Keep screenshot capture and visual assertions in perspective
Playwright’s Page screenshot API offers capture controls such as timeout, scale, and stylesheet injection. These control how and when the page is captured; they are not documented as fixes for missing font coverage. Injecting styles can change the font choice, but only helps if the replacement font is available and includes the character.
Playwright’s visual comparison documentation says screenshot assertions wait until two consecutive page screenshots are the same before comparing the final screenshot. This can reduce instability when the page is still changing. It does not establish that a font has loaded correctly or that it contains the requested symbol, and browser/platform rendering can differ. Keep visual baselines tied to a consistent project environment.

Compare local and CI environments
When the screenshot differs only in CI, compare the rendering inputs rather than assuming the screenshot call is at fault. Record the browser engine and version, operating system or container image, locale, and font files available to each run. Check whether both environments fetch the same webfont and whether the DOM text and pre-capture browser rendering match.

- If the DOM text differs, investigate application data, formatting, or locale.
- If text matches but the browser rendering differs, investigate loaded fonts, fallback availability, and font requests.
- If the browser rendering matches but the screenshot differs, isolate capture timing or other state changes, then use a minimal reproduction.
- If the issue occurs only in one engine, compare that engine’s result separately; do not assume Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit render fonts identically.
Use issue-specific workarounds narrowly
In a March 2024 discussion of Playwright issue #29968, a maintainer described a Chromium case where fonts were requested again around screenshot capture. The reporter later said their workaround involved local font files, installing them in CI, and clearing the system font cache. That is a report about one case, not a universal Playwright fix. Try a similar change only if your reproduction matches the symptoms, and verify it using the project’s required font.

Do not block all font requests as a generic workaround: that can force a different fallback and change the page rendering. Another report, issue #18195, describes screenshot timeouts whose call log said capture was waiting for fonts. Treat that as a reported symptom, not evidence that font waiting causes every missing currency symbol.
