If Pixel Buds won’t update or won’t reconnect afterward, start with charge, seating and Bluetooth, then let an interrupted update resume. Forget and pair the Buds again only if those checks fail; reset them as a last resort because it erases settings and preferences.
Start with power, seating and Bluetooth
- Charge the case and earbuds. Confirm both earbuds are seated securely in the case and the Buds are near the phone or computer.
- Check Bluetooth on the host device. Turn Bluetooth off, wait several seconds, and turn it back on. If the Buds do not reconnect automatically, choose Pixel Buds in the device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Reduce possible interference. If the connection remains unstable, check for nearby wireless interference, including other devices using the 2.4 GHz band. Google’s connectivity troubleshooting recommends checking this along with Bluetooth and device proximity.
Let an interrupted update resume
On Android, the update downloads the next time the Buds are used with a Pixel or an Android 6.0-or-newer device. With enough charge in both the earbuds and case, installation starts the next time the earbuds are placed in the case. Google says downloading and installation each take about 10 minutes. If installation is interrupted—for example, by removing the earbuds—it pauses and resumes at the next opportunity. These are times in Google’s instructions, not guaranteed completion times.

Check the update status or install manually
Open the Pixel Buds settings and select Firmware update to check status. If a manual update is offered, select Manual update available and follow the prompts; Google says that flow takes about 15 minutes. Keep the phone and Pixel Buds app up to date, and allow the app the Nearby devices permission. See Google’s firmware update instructions and Pixel Buds Quick Start Guide.
If updating in the web companion on Windows gets stuck
Google lists Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a as supported by its browser companion, and recommends Chrome or Edge. Its supported operating systems and browser details are listed on the web companion support page. For a Windows update stuck at 0% or 50%, disconnect the Buds from the web companion, remove them from Windows Bluetooth devices, pair them with Windows again, then reopen the web companion and retry the update.

Forget the Buds and pair them again
If Bluetooth still will not reconnect after the checks above, remove or forget Google Pixel Buds in the host device’s Bluetooth settings. Then put both earbuds in the open case and hold the pairing button for 3 seconds, until the case light bounces white. Select the Buds in Bluetooth settings or follow the pairing prompt. Some Android devices require adding them manually from Bluetooth settings. Google provides model-specific instructions in its pairing troubleshooting guide.
Reset the Buds only if pairing still fails
A reset clears settings and preferences, including the device name and feature preferences. For the current models covered by Google’s pairing instructions, first forget the Buds in the host device’s Bluetooth settings. Connect the charging case to power with a USB-C cable, seat both earbuds correctly and leave the case open. Hold the pairing button on the back of the case for 30 seconds.

- Keep holding until the status light stops bouncing and turns off, then release the button.
- During the reset, the light blinks orange and white. When reset finishes, it bounces white, indicating the Buds are ready to pair.
- Pair the Buds with the host device again.
If reset does not start, check that both earbuds are seated properly. The steps above are not for the original 2017 Pixel Buds; Google gives that generation different pairing and case-reset instructions. Check the case connector before choosing a USB-C cable, since connector compatibility varies by case generation. Follow Google’s pairing and reset steps for the specific model.
When to contact Google support
If the connection steps do not resolve the problem, contact Google customer support. If the case will not charge or the earbuds remain unresponsive after checking power and seating, use support for the exact Pixel Buds model rather than attempting an unverified repair. Google’s connectivity guide directs users to support when troubleshooting fails.
