Microsoft’s general guidance says online DISM repair uses Windows Update by default and allows you to specify another source when needed. Run DISM, then System File Checker
Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges. Run DISM first, as Microsoft recommends, and let it finish before starting SFC.

- Run the online DISM repair. Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. This uses Windows Update as the repair-file source by default. - Run SFC after DISM completes. Enter
sfc /scannowin the same elevated prompt. Keep the window open until verification reaches 100%.
DISM provides repair files; SFC checks protected system files and may replace corrupted ones with cached copies. SFC can report different outcomes, including no integrity violations or that the scan could not be performed. A successful scan does not establish that every servicing or update issue is resolved. Give DISM an alternate repair source
If online repair cannot obtain the files, use a suitable Windows source and substitute its actual path for the example below:

Choose a source available in your environment
- A working Windows installation: Microsoft documents using a Windows folder as a source; the path in the command is only an example.

- Windows media on USB or DVD: Microsoft lists removable media as a possible source. The drive must contain suitable Windows files; an empty USB drive is not a repair source.

If DISM still cannot repair the image
Microsoft Learn recommends analyzing CBS.log when repair does not succeed. The error code alone is not enough to diagnose a particular PC. Before seeking help, record the Windows version and build, the exact command you ran, and the complete output; these details help distinguish a source problem from other servicing context.
