The right E Ink tablet depends on what you need it to do: the BOOX Note Air5 C is the more app-flexible choice, while the Kobo Elipsa 2E is built around Kobo reading and handwritten markup. Current verified details support comparing those two models, not a reliable five-device ranking. Use the workflow guide below to choose without treating an incomplete shortlist as a “top five.”
How should you choose an E Ink tablet?
Start with your main task, then check the software and accessories that task requires. A focused notebook, an e-reader for a particular ebook library, and an Android-based E Ink tablet offer different tradeoffs; screen size alone does not tell you which will fit your work.

- For a flexible app workflow: look for an Android-based device with access to the apps and services you rely on. E Ink refresh behavior differs from a conventional LCD tablet, so Android support alone does not guarantee that every app will feel smooth.
- For reading and markup: check whether the device supports annotation in the books and documents you use. DRM or document permissions can restrict markup even when a tablet supports it in general.
- For writing: compare the included stylus, its writing features, and the cost of any necessary cover or keyboard. The tablet’s headline price may not represent the complete setup.
- For color documents: check both color and monochrome resolution. A color E Ink screen may render black-and-white text at a higher pixel density than color content.
What do the two verified options offer?
The following specifications and US store prices are listed by the manufacturers; they are not independent performance-test results. Prices and availability can change.
| Device | Display | Workflow and software | Storage and expansion | Writing bundle and accessories | Listed US price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BOOX Note Air5 C | 10.3-inch Kaleido 3; 300 ppi black and white, 150 ppi color | Android 15 and Google Play access; warm and cold front lighting | 64 GB; microSD support; 6 GB RAM | Pen3 is listed in the standard box. Compatible protective and keyboard covers are separate. | US$499.99 on the BOOX store page accessed in 2026 |
| Kobo Elipsa 2E | 10.3-inch E Ink Carta 1200 touchscreen; 227 ppi | Kobo eBook and PDF markup; adjustable ComfortLight PRO | 32 GB | Stylus 2 is included; SleepCover is sold separately. | US$399.99 on the Kobo US store page accessed in 2026 |
BOOX Note Air5 C: app flexibility and color documents
BOOX lists Android 15, Google Play access, microSD support, and both warm and cold front lighting. Those features make the Note Air5 C the more flexible of these two options for readers who need app choice or color documents. Its 150 ppi color resolution is half its 300 ppi black-and-white resolution, so color content should not be expected to look as sharp as monochrome content at the same viewing conditions.

The manufacturer lists an approximate weight of 430 g and a 3,700 mAh battery. Those figures describe the device’s specifications; the battery capacity does not establish how long it will last in a particular person’s workflow. E Ink refresh behavior also differs from an LCD tablet, and the listed Android compatibility does not establish how smoothly each individual app performs.
Kobo Elipsa 2E: Kobo reading and handwritten markup
Kobo describes the Elipsa 2E as a large-screen reader for Kobo books and documents. Its included Stylus 2 can mark up eBooks and PDFs, but Kobo notes that DRM or permission restrictions can prevent PDF annotation. Check the access rules for the specific documents you plan to mark up rather than assuming every PDF will be writable.

- Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
- Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.
Kobo says the battery can last weeks depending on individual use. That is a usage-dependent manufacturer claim, not a controlled comparison with another tablet. Kobo identifies the Elipsa 2E as not waterproof.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy isn’t this a ranked list of five?
A defensible “top five” requires current, model-specific information for each candidate, including the exact model, display, stylus bundle, software, regional price, and availability. The verified details here establish those points for the BOOX Note Air5 C and Kobo Elipsa 2E only. Naming three more models or ranking five devices without checking their current official specifications could mislead readers about generations, bundles, or stock.
Rank #3
- Our most advanced Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” Colorsoft display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
- Bring ideas to life in color – The custom-built Colorsoft display delivers high-contrast, paper-like color that’s easy on the eyes without distracting flashes when writing.
- Get a pen-on-paper feel: The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
- More room to read, write, and think – Just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, with fluid performance and a large 11" display that gives you space to work comfortably.
- Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.
That matters especially in a changing category: a model name seen in an older review does not establish that the same generation is still sold, that its stylus remains bundled, or that it is available in your country. Treat the two listed devices as a practical starting comparison, not as the market’s overall winners.

What should you check before buying?
- Choose the workflow first. Decide whether reading, handwriting, document markup, or app flexibility is your priority.
- Confirm your content works. For ebooks and PDFs, check the store, file format, DRM, and document permissions that apply to your material.
- Compare the full writing setup. Confirm whether a stylus is included and whether a cover or keyboard is an extra purchase. For the two devices above, the BOOX listing includes Pen3 and the Kobo listing includes Stylus 2; Kobo lists its SleepCover separately, and BOOX lists compatible covers separately.
- Check the screen at the resolution you will use. For color E Ink, compare color and monochrome resolution rather than relying on the display’s diagonal measurement alone.
- Verify your region’s live listing. Prices cited here are US store listings accessed in 2026. Check the manufacturer’s current page for your country, the exact bundle, and availability before ordering.
Which one makes more sense for your workflow?
- Choose the BOOX Note Air5 C if app access, expandable storage, or color documents are central to your workflow, and you are comfortable with the tradeoff between its color and monochrome pixel density.
- Choose the Kobo Elipsa 2E if you want Kobo reading with an included stylus for supported eBook and PDF markup, and its 32 GB storage and document-permission limits suit your needs.
