OneDrive error 0x80070032 usually points to a problem with the OneDrive client, the account it is using, synchronization state, or available storage. It is not, by itself, evidence that your files are damaged or that your drive needs replacing. Work through the checks below in order: verify the account and storage, reset OneDrive, then unlink and relink it if necessary. Microsoft states that resetting or unlinking OneDrive does not delete your files.
The code is sometimes typed as “ox80070032” with a lowercase letter o. The Windows format is 0x80070032, with a zero after the x.

What error 0x80070032 means
There is no single, publicly established cause for this code in every OneDrive installation. In practice, it appears when the OneDrive desktop client cannot complete an operation involving synchronization, account identity, storage availability, or its local configuration. The same code can therefore require different fixes on different computers.
Treat it first as a OneDrive software and account problem. Check the client’s status and configuration before moving, deleting, or replacing files. A reset or relink rebuilds the local connection; it does not erase the copy stored in OneDrive.

Before changing anything: protect your files and record the state
Do these quick checks before resetting or unlinking. They reduce the chance of troubleshooting the wrong account and give you a recovery reference if synchronization takes a long time.
- Open File Explorer and note the exact OneDrive folder path shown in the left navigation pane.
- If a file is important and currently available offline, make a separate copy to a folder outside OneDrive or to another trusted backup location. Do not use “free up space” or delete commands while diagnosing the error.
- Look at the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area. If it is hidden, select the small up-arrow first.
- Write down whether the icon shows an error, “syncing,” “up to date,” a paused state, or a storage warning. The wording varies by OneDrive version.
- Close applications that are editing files in the OneDrive folder. Office documents, databases, virtual-machine images, and large archives can remain locked and prevent a clean sync.
Fix OneDrive error 0x80070032 step by step
1. Inspect the OneDrive sync status
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
- Read the status at the top of the panel. If it says synchronization is paused, choose the resume option and wait several minutes.
- Open the panel’s help or settings area and look for a list of files that could not sync. Record the file name and the exact message before dismissing it.
- If the panel will not open, right-click the cloud icon and choose the available option to close or quit OneDrive. Start it again from the Windows Start menu, then check the status once more.
A status that changes to “up to date” after restarting indicates a temporary client state. If the error returns, continue rather than repeatedly restarting the computer.
2. Confirm the signed-in Microsoft account
A computer can have a personal OneDrive account and a work or school account at the same time. The folder you are viewing may belong to one identity while the cloud panel is signed in with another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Select the cloud icon and open Settings (the label may appear as a gear icon).
- Open the Account section and read the displayed email address and organization name.
- Compare that identity with the account that owns the files you expect to synchronize. A personal address and a work or school address are separate storage locations even when they use the same Windows sign-in.
- If the wrong account is connected, do not delete the existing OneDrive folder. Use the account controls to unlink it, then configure the intended account as described below.
On a company- or school-managed PC, an administrator may enforce the account, folder location, or synchronization policy. If the account section is locked or the error appears immediately after an organizational policy change, contact the organization’s IT administrator before unlinking.

3. Check cloud quota and local disk space
OneDrive synchronization needs room in two places: your cloud storage plan and the Windows drive that holds the local OneDrive database and any downloaded files.
Check OneDrive storage
- Open OneDrive on the web in a browser and sign in with the same account shown in the desktop client.
- Open the account or storage information page and check used space, remaining space, and any subscription or quota warning.
- If the account is full or its subscription has expired, remove unnecessary items from the correct account, empty its recycle bin if appropriate, or resolve the subscription issue. Do not remove files merely to test the desktop client unless you have a backup.
Check Windows storage
- Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11 or Windows 10.
- Confirm that the drive containing the OneDrive folder has free space. Also check the drive’s capacity in File Explorer > This PC.
- Keep enough space for the files that are marked to remain available offline and for OneDrive’s temporary synchronization work. If the drive is nearly full, move unrelated personal files to a separate location or change OneDrive’s folder location only after backing up and understanding the account prompt.
Online-only files do not all occupy their full size locally, but OneDrive still needs local working space. A full disk can make the client report a generic synchronization error instead of a clear storage message.
4. Reconnect the network and restart the client
Confirm that Windows has a working internet connection by opening a normal website. If you use a VPN, proxy, metered connection, or security policy that blocks cloud applications, temporarily test on a permitted connection or ask the administrator whether OneDrive traffic is restricted. Then quit and relaunch OneDrive from the Start menu.
This step does not change your account or files. It is useful when the cloud panel is stuck in a stale “processing” state, but it will not fix a full quota or a wrong account.

5. Reset OneDrive
Resetting clears the desktop client’s local configuration and makes it rebuild its synchronization state. Microsoft’s guidance says the reset preserves files and data; it does not remove the cloud copy or intentionally delete the OneDrive folder.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveOneDrive.exe /resetand select OK. - The cloud icon may disappear while the client resets. Wait about two minutes. If it does not restart automatically, open Start, type OneDrive, and launch the desktop app.
- Sign in if prompted and allow the synchronization database to rebuild. Keep the computer connected to power and the internet while the status changes from processing to up to date.
If Windows reports that it cannot find the file, the installation may be in a different folder. Try the following Run commands one at a time:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OneDriveOneDrive.exe /resetC:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OneDriveOneDrive.exe /reset
Use the path that exists on your computer. Do not add a second OneDrive installation simply because one path is missing. After the reset, verify the account and folder shown in OneDrive settings before opening or moving a large number of files.

Use unlinking when reset does not clear the error, the wrong account is connected, or the local folder association is damaged. Unlinking changes the connection between this Windows installation and the account; it does not delete files from OneDrive.

- Select the OneDrive cloud icon and open Settings.
- Choose Account, then select Unlink this PC (the exact wording can vary slightly).
- Read the confirmation and proceed. Existing local files remain on the computer, and files that were online-only remain available through OneDrive on the web.
- Start OneDrive again. Sign in with the intended Microsoft account.
- When asked for the OneDrive folder location, choose the existing folder only if it is the folder you intend to use and it contains the expected files. Otherwise, choose a new empty location and let OneDrive synchronize before moving additional files.
- Review Files On-Demand and folder-selection choices. Folders excluded from this device may still exist online but will not appear locally.
Do not interpret the initial absence of an online-only file in File Explorer as deletion. Such a file may appear as a cloud icon and download only when opened. Check the web copy before taking any destructive action.
7. Update or reinstall the OneDrive client
If the account, quota, disk space, reset, and relink checks are all correct, install the current OneDrive client supplied by Microsoft.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Find Microsoft OneDrive, open its menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download and install the current OneDrive desktop client from Microsoft’s official OneDrive download channel, then sign in with the intended account.
- Confirm the folder location, Files On-Demand setting, and selected folders. Allow the first synchronization to finish before judging whether the error is resolved.
Microsoft’s guidance treats reinstalling as an escalation step after reset and account checks. Uninstalling the client does not itself delete files or data, but files that were never synchronized should be preserved separately before you uninstall.
Choose the least disruptive fix first

Targeted troubleshooting when the error returns
The code appears only for one folder or file
Check the file name, path length, and whether the item is still open in another program. Close the program, wait for OneDrive to process the item, and test a small new text file in the same folder. If the new file syncs but the original does not, preserve the original and inspect its name, location, and ownership rather than resetting the whole client again.
The desktop folder is empty after relinking
Verify the signed-in email address and the selected folder location. An empty folder can mean that OneDrive is still building its index, that Files On-Demand has not downloaded content, or that you connected a different account. Check the web view before moving files into the empty folder; creating duplicates can produce conflicts.
Sync stops after the reset with a storage warning
Return to the cloud-quota and local-disk checks. A reset cannot create additional cloud capacity or free Windows disk space. Resolve the relevant limit, then restart OneDrive and allow the queue to drain.

Policies can control which account is permitted, whether personal OneDrive is allowed, and where files are stored. Do not remove a work or school account, change the folder location, or bypass a policy without authorization. Give the administrator the exact code, account identity, OneDrive status, and the steps already attempted.
Reset and relinking both fail
Install the current client if you have not already done so. If the error remains, gather the OneDrive version, Windows edition, account type, storage status, and the exact action that triggers the code. Contact Microsoft support for a personal account or your organization’s IT support for a managed account. The escalation is important because an account-side or policy-side condition cannot be repaired solely by changing local files.
Will resetting, unlinking, or uninstalling delete OneDrive files?
Resetting OneDrive does not delete your files or data. Unlinking the PC does not lose files; files that are online-only remain available on OneDrive on the web. Uninstalling the desktop client also does not itself erase the cloud copy. The practical risk is different: a file that never finished uploading may exist only on the local disk, and a user can accidentally delete or move it while trying to clean up. Make a separate backup of important unsynchronized work before any disruptive step, and verify the web copy before deleting local content.
After the repair: verify synchronization
- Create a small test file inside the intended OneDrive folder.
- Wait until the cloud icon reports that synchronization is complete.
- Open OneDrive on the web and confirm that the test file appears in the correct account and folder.
- On another device, if available, confirm that the file can be opened or downloaded.
- Remove the test file only after confirming that the connection works, and allow that deletion to synchronize as well.
Keep the account identity, storage status, and final OneDrive folder location documented for future troubleshooting. Avoid repeatedly unlinking and relinking while a large library is still synchronizing; each cycle can create another full indexing pass.
