How to Fix OBS Skipping Videos in a 24/7 YouTube Study Stream

Find out whether OBS skipping is caused by network drops, rendering or encoding lag, viewer buffering, or a media source—and follow the matching troubleshooting steps.

First identify where the skipping occurs: OBS’s dropped-frames counter points to a network problem; rendering or encoding lag points to performance; buffering reported only by viewers may be outside OBS; and a video that jumps or stops in OBS points to the media source. These problems have different fixes, so check the symptom before changing settings.

Pin down what is skipping

When the problem happens, note where it appears and whether it starts immediately or only after the stream has run for a while. Check OBS’s status indicators and Stats, the YouTube stream health messages, what you see in the OBS preview, and what viewers report.

What you observe Where to investigate first
OBS dropped-frames counter rises Network stability, upload capacity, and the connection to YouTube’s ingest server.
Rendering lag or encoding lag appears in OBS Stats or logs GPU workload, scene complexity, sources, filters, output resolution, and frame rate.
OBS reports no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering Viewer device, network, and location, as well as whether the stream settings are accessible to a broad audience.
The video visibly jumps, freezes, ends, or fails to loop in OBS The media source and its loop or restart behavior. The symptom alone does not identify a source-specific cause.

These paths are distinct: changing bitrate will not fix a media source that stops at the end of a file, and changing a source’s loop setting will not fix an unstable network connection. For source-specific advice, identify the source type, describe its loop or restart behavior, and share the relevant OBS log and which counter changes.

Fix network-dropped frames

OBS describes dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Too many drops can disconnect the stream. Start with the connection rather than assuming the video file or GPU is at fault. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, covers these checks.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  1. Check upload capacity and stability. Set the streaming bitrate to one the connection can sustain consistently. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee for every connection or YouTube setup. A stable wired Ethernet connection is preferable when Wi-Fi is unreliable; OBS cautions that “WiFi may be unstable for streaming”.
  2. Test another ingest route where available. Try an alternate server or service option if OBS makes one available. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not proof that a particular server caused the problem.
  3. Check software and network configuration. Temporarily test whether a VPN, firewall or security software, network-optimization utility, or outdated network driver is interfering. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helps.
  4. On Windows, test OBS’s documented network options if needed. OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report helping. It also suggests checking Bind to IP and, if necessary, testing IPv4-only; if that does not improve the connection, return to IPv4/IPv6. These are troubleshooting options, not universal settings.
  5. Ask the ISP if the connection remains unstable. Congestion or routing beyond your home network may be involved.

OBS offers dynamic bitrate adjustment as a fallback during congestion. It can reduce quality and does not resolve the underlying connection problem, so use it as a trade-off rather than a permanent fix for a persistently unstable link.

Fix rendering or encoding lag

OBS uses GPU resources to compose and render scenes. Demanding sources, filters, complex scenes, or other GPU workloads can leave too little capacity for the stream. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide is dated 2021; use its general recommendations as diagnostic steps, not as a diagnosis of your particular setup.

  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
  1. Reduce avoidable GPU work. Close applications you know are using substantial GPU resources, simplify scenes, and remove costly sources or filters that the stream does not need. OBS notes that sources can still use resources when they are not visible.
  2. Match source demands to the output. Use media and capture sources at resolutions suitable for the stream instead of processing unnecessarily large inputs.
  3. Lower output resolution or frame rate if the lag continues. In OBS, open Settings > Video and test a lower output resolution or frame rate. Frame rate affects rendering and encoding; OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. This is a diagnostic adjustment, not a universal ideal.
  4. If you use Windows, test running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a possible quick fix for GPU-overload issues; it is not guaranteed to help every system.

After each change, watch OBS Stats to see whether rendering or encoding lag improves. Avoid changing the network bitrate as the first response when the symptom is performance lag rather than dropped frames.

Match YouTube encoder settings to your stream

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (not exceeding 4 seconds), and RTMPS. Its bitrate recommendation depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every study stream. Before using a figure, confirm the encoder settings in OBS and choose the matching row in YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance.

Video setting Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are figures in YouTube’s official recommended bitrate table; its page does not state a publication year. They are not specific to study streams, and they should not override the capacity of your actual connection. Test before going live with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitor YouTube stream health and its messages while live.

When only viewers report buffering

If OBS shows no dropped frames but some viewers see buffering, do not treat that alone as evidence that OBS is skipping frames. Viewer location, device, and network can affect playback. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, but an individual viewer can still have local playback constraints. See OBS’s streaming-issues guidance (dated 2021) and YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. If buffering is widespread, consider a lower bitrate that fits YouTube’s recommendations and is more accessible to viewers with constrained connections.
