One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTest a web UI against the browsers and devices your product actually supports, prioritizing critical user journeys and platform-specific risks. Playwright projects make repeatable browser and emulated-device checks practical in CI; use real devices when hardware or mobile-OS behavior matters. No single automation run—or handset—proves universal compatibility.
Build a test matrix around support and risk
Start with the environments you promise to support, then decide which combinations merit routine checks. A useful matrix reflects both who uses your product and what could go wrong, rather than every theoretical browser-and-device pairing.

- Write down your support policy. List supported browsers, operating systems, and any minimum versions your team commits to. Keep this policy visible alongside the test configuration.
- Identify high-impact journeys. Include paths such as sign-in, checkout, navigation, forms, and media where a defect would block users or have significant consequences.
- Use audience and failure evidence. If available, consult your product analytics and incident history to prioritize platforms and flows. Without that evidence, there is no universal best matrix.
- Map platform-specific risks. Mark where touch, viewport changes, permissions, media playback, or browser/OS integration could change the result. Add real-device checks for the consequential cases.
- Choose a lean baseline and expand selectively. Run a dependable set of browser projects on critical flows, then add targeted device or branded-browser checks where they reduce a specific risk.
Review the matrix when your support policy, audience, or incidents change. Keep framework, browser, operating-system, and device configuration visible so a failure can be reproduced.

Use Playwright projects for repeatable browser coverage
In Playwright Test, a project is a named configuration under which tests run. Projects can vary by browser, device, environment, timeout, or retry settings. The official projects guide demonstrates Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, emulated mobile profiles, and branded Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

Here is a small configuration that runs the same suite in three browser engines. It assumes Playwright Test is installed and a standard playwright.config.ts file is used:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
projects: [
{ name: 'chromium', use: { browserName: 'chromium' } },
{ name: 'firefox', use: { browserName: 'firefox' } },
{ name: 'webkit', use: { browserName: 'webkit' } },
],
});
Run all configured projects with npx playwright test, or select one with npx playwright test --project=webkit. Add projects for environments your support policy or risk assessment calls for, not simply to maximize the count.
Add mobile emulation where it helps
Playwright’s emulation settings can simulate parameters including user agent, screen size, viewport, and touch. A device preset makes responsive layout and touch-interaction checks inexpensive to run alongside desktop tests. For example, import a named preset and attach it to a project:

Use a preset available in your installed Playwright version; preset names and details can change. A preset represents simulated browser and device parameters, not a physical phone. Playwright also notes that a preset such as Desktop Chrome carries a Windows-specific user-agent string unless you change it, so inspect assumptions that matter to your test.
Check branded browsers when the distinction matters
Playwright’s Chromium project can be ahead of stable branded browsers. Its browser guidance describes opting into installed Chrome or Edge stable channels when you need regression coverage against public releases, enterprise policies, or media codecs. Playwright’s WebKit build is not branded Safari. For cases such as video playback, the documentation points to WebKit on macOS as closer to Safari behavior; it still should not be described as testing the Safari app itself.
Browser behavior can depend on the host operating system. Playwright calls out media-codec variation across Linux, macOS, and Windows, so a passing run on one host does not settle behavior on another.

Know what each kind of test can establish
| Approach | What it covers well | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Local Playwright browser projects | Repeatable automated checks across configured Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit builds. | Compatibility with every branded browser release, OS policy, or physical device. |
| Emulated mobile profiles | Responsive layouts and interactions under simulated viewport, screen, user-agent, and touch parameters. | How every physical phone, mobile OS, or browser integration behaves. |
| Branded Chrome or Edge channels | Checks against selected installed stable browser releases when that distinction is important. | All versions, configurations, enterprise policies, or operating systems users may have. |
| Real-device testing | Validation involving actual hardware or mobile-OS behavior, such as touch, media, permissions, and viewport behavior. | Universal coverage from a small selection of devices. |
Use the least costly level of fidelity that answers the question at hand, then move closer to production when the risk calls for it. Emulation is excellent for breadth and fast feedback; it is not a substitute for hardware-sensitive checks.

Add real Android and iOS devices for platform-sensitive risks
Use a physical device when a defect may depend on hardware or mobile-OS integration—for example, touch behavior, permissions, media, or real viewport changes. A team-owned phone can support hands-on checks, but one model cannot stand in for a matrix.
Cloud device services can provide access to a broader selection. BrowserStack documents Playwright support by operating system, browser, and device, and separately documents mobile-device testing; consult its current compatibility page and mobile-device guide before relying on a particular combination. Available versions and choices are provider-specific and can change.

- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
BrowserStack announced on June 12, 2025, that it supported Playwright testing on real iPhones and iPads using Safari. In that announcement, the company attributed a claim that iOS drove 28% of global web traffic to its CTO and co-founder. Treat that percentage as a company-stated figure, not an independently verified traffic measurement. See the announcement for its context.
Before adopting any cloud setup, verify the exact device and browser versions, Playwright support, CI fit, parallel capacity, debugging artifacts, data and privacy terms, and total cost. The documented capabilities alone do not establish a neutral performance or price ranking between providers.
Make runs diagnosable and maintainable
- Record versions and environment. Keep Playwright, browser, OS, and device details with the test configuration or run output.
- Update deliberately. Playwright recommends updating Playwright and installing its corresponding browsers; review changes rather than allowing environment drift to obscure failures. See its browser installation guidance.
- Separate broad checks from expensive fidelity checks. Run emulated and local browser coverage frequently; reserve physical devices and additional branded channels for the flows and risks that justify them.
- Investigate a failure in context. Reproduce it in the same project and host environment before concluding that it is a general cross-browser defect. A codec, OS, or preset assumption may explain a difference.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot of a page as one input to UI review or documentation, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace an interactive cross-browser test suite or prove that a UI works on real hardware. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; see the API documentation.

Troubleshoot common cross-platform test failures
A mobile layout test passes but a phone still behaves differently
The test may only exercise emulated parameters. Verify the physical browser, OS, viewport behavior, and relevant touch or permission interaction on a real device.
Recommended Free Tools
A test passes in Chromium but fails in Chrome or Edge
The Playwright Chromium build and a stable branded browser are not necessarily the same release. Run the relevant installed stable channel and record its version and host OS.
A Safari-sensitive media test differs from WebKit locally
WebKit is not branded Safari, and codecs can depend on the host OS. For a closer Safari-related media check, use WebKit on macOS as Playwright’s guidance describes, then validate on real Safari devices where the risk warrants it.
A cloud-device configuration stops working
Provider compatibility changes. Recheck the current supported Playwright version, device, OS, browser, and automation method on the provider’s live documentation rather than assuming a previously working combination remains available.
