Rising dropped frames or a yellow/red connection status usually point to an unstable network path or a bitrate that exceeds your sustained upload capacity. If dropped frames are not rising, use YouTube’s exact Stream health message to check for a stream-key, URL, RTMPS, SSL, or timeout problem. The right fix depends on which pattern you see.
First, identify whether it is a network or setup problem
OBS Project says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between your computer and the remote ingest server. That does not necessarily mean OBS itself is at fault: the problem may be your upload connection, Wi-Fi, router, software interference, ISP, or the route to YouTube.

| What you observe | Likely direction | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped-frames count keeps increasing, or its connection status turns yellow/red | Network instability or insufficient stable upload capacity | Lower bitrate, check the network path, and compare OBS with YouTube Stream health. |
| Dropped frames are not rising, but YouTube reports an encoder startup, stream-key, URL, SSL, or timeout error | Ingest setup or protocol issue | Follow the specific YouTube message; verify the key, URL, or RTMPS support as appropriate. |
Before changing settings, note the exact YouTube message and whether OBS still shows local video and audio. YouTube’s Live Control Room Stream health displays status messages and instructions. YouTube’s guide to monitoring live-stream health explains where to inspect it.
Fix a connection that is dropping frames
1. Lower the bitrate to fit stable upload
In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. OBS Project’s 2024 troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point—not a guarantee. Base your choice on sustained, reliable upload capacity rather than a best-case speed-test peak, then test under a workload similar to the stream. YouTube likewise recommends testing the connection and choosing a reliable quality.

YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations, accessed in 2026, include:
| Stream format | Recommended bitrate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest setting; not a universal minimum. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest setting; not a universal minimum. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest setting; not a universal minimum. |
The appropriate bitrate also depends on frame rate, resolution, codec, and how stable your upload is. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations include protocol and encoding guidance: RTMP/RTMPS options, H.264/H.265/AV1 options, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds). These settings do not compensate for an unstable connection. YouTube’s advice is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
2. Check the network route
- Try Ethernet: If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. OBS warns Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A cable only addresses the local wireless link; it will not fix ISP congestion or a problem on the route to YouTube.
- Restart the modem and router: Do this if the equipment appears to be having connectivity trouble. If the cause is uncertain, OBS recommends consulting your ISP before replacing networking equipment.
- Test without a VPN: A VPN can create an unstable route. Temporarily disconnect it and retry, if that is safe and appropriate for your setup.
3. Isolate security and network software
Firewall or antivirus software can interfere with OBS-to-ingest connections. As a brief diagnostic, temporarily disable only the relevant protection, test, then restore it. If the test identifies interference, configure an OBS exception and keep security software enabled. Also check network “boost,” “optimizer,” or prioritization tools and network drivers for interference or outdated versions. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples; they are not the only possible sources.
4. Review OBS network options
In OBS, go to Settings → Advanced → Network and check that Bind to IP is set to Default. On Windows, OBS suggests testing Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. You can also test IPv4 Only; if it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6.

- [Convertible Connector]This usb hub with ethernet not only has USB-A connector, but also can be converted to USB-C connector, so that you can easily convert the connector according to the device port, improve the convenience of use.
- [High-Speed Data Transfer] The usb to ethernet adapter adopts USB 3.0 transmission technology, supports up to 5Gbps transmission rate, and is compatible with USB 2.0(480Gbps),USB 1.0(12Mbps), easily transfer video, files and other data for you in seconds. (Note: Maximum output current is 900mA, does not support charging devices.)
- [Widely Compatible]The usb c ethernet adapter for iMac, MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, XPS and many other devices. Compatible with Windows 11/10/8.1/8, Mac OS, iPad OS, Chrome OS.(Note: Driver is required on Win 7) It can be used in office, school, library and other occasions, compact and portable, easy to carry around.
Dynamic bitrate can lower quality during congestion to reduce dropped frames, but OBS says it does not fix the underlying cause. Treat it as a fallback when you cannot resolve the instability, not as a substitute for a stable connection.
Fix a YouTube key, URL, or protocol error
Stream-key or encoder startup error
If YouTube reports an encoder startup error, use the stream key shown for the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder. Confirm the key and stream destination belong together. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps cover this path. Correcting credentials helps when the error points to setup; it will not restore upload capacity when OBS is clearly dropping frames.

RTMPS, SSL, or timeout error
For an RTMPS error, check that the server URL uses RTMPS rather than RTMP and that your encoder supports RTMPS. For an SSL error, YouTube also suggests specifying port 443. For a timeout, verify the URL and encoder support. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected by TLS/SSL. Follow the specific instructions in YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guide; do not change protocol settings at random when the observed symptom is rising dropped frames.
If reconnect attempts still fail
- Retest after one change at a time. Keep the stream settings and network workload consistent so you can tell which change affects the symptom.
- If OBS keeps dropping frames, test outbound connectivity and contact your ISP. Congestion or routing beyond your home network may be involved.
- If OBS appears stable but YouTube Stream health remains unhealthy, save the OBS log and the exact YouTube status message for support.
- Avoid assuming a reinstall or new hardware is the answer. The official guidance does not establish either as a universal fix; diagnose the network path or the specific ingest error first.
OBS’s official stream connection troubleshooting guide covers dropped frames, network configuration, and possible interference. It does not establish a universal reconnect retry interval, retry count, or single timer setting that resolves failed attempts. Some network options are platform-specific; OBS identifies network optimizations and TCP pacing as Windows options.
