If FFmpeg is reading a direct HTTP media stream, start by adding -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 before -i. Set retry limits to suit the job rather than treating any example values as universal. If the input is a YouTube watch-page URL, first find out whether an extractor such as yt-dlp is handling it: the failure may happen before FFmpeg receives media.
Start with the input FFmpeg is actually reading
Reconnect options are protocol-specific, so identify the input at the point where FFmpeg reads it. A YouTube watch URL and a direct HTTP media URL are not necessarily the same input. An extractor such as yt-dlp can resolve a YouTube URL, download media, invoke FFmpeg as an external downloader, or pass media through standard output; these are distinct workflows. The yt-dlp documentation describes these capabilities, but it cannot identify which path a particular command uses: yt-dlp usage and options.

Check the full command and logs from the first failing stage. Determine whether the extractor stalls, the downloader fails to start, or FFmpeg reports a read error on a resolved HTTP or playlist input. The phrase “freezes” alone does not establish that the network disconnected.

Configure a direct HTTP stream
Mid-stream network interruption
For a direct HTTP media URL, use this as a starting pattern:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_delay_max 30 -reconnect_max_retries 10 -i 'HTTP_MEDIA_URL' -c copy output.mkvFFmpeg input options go before the -i they configure. Here, 30 seconds and 10 retries are illustrative tuning choices, not universal recommendations or guarantees. A long-running service may need a different retry cap than an interactive, one-shot download. The documented options also include -reconnect_delay_total_max if you need to bound the total retry wait.

Live input that reports EOF
If a live or endless HTTP input temporarily returns EOF, test adding -reconnect_at_eof 1 before -i. Do not add it blindly to a finite video: a normal end could be treated as a reason to reconnect.

Connection setup failures and HTTP errors
If logs show TCP or TLS errors while establishing the connection, -reconnect_on_network_error 1 may apply. If the server returns an HTTP status, inspect it first. For an appropriate temporary server failure, scope retries to the relevant status or class—for example, -reconnect_on_http_error '5xx'. A broad retry policy is not automatically helpful for errors that are not transient.

Diagnose the freeze before changing flags
- Capture the complete command and logs. Find the last successful stage: URL extraction, downloader launch, opening the input, or reading packets.
- Look for the failure signal. Read errors during transfer point toward a mid-stream disconnect; EOF, TCP/TLS setup errors, and HTTP status responses call for different diagnosis.
- Check whether FFmpeg is still producing packets. A paused picture while the process continues is not, by itself, proof of a network drop.
- Confirm the resolved input and protocol. If yt-dlp or another extractor is involved, establish whether FFmpeg receives a direct media URL, an HLS/DASH playlist, or input through another path.
- Set a deliberate retry budget. Choose a maximum delay, retry count, or total delay appropriate to whether the job should wait or stop.
Check your FFmpeg build and workflow
The online FFmpeg protocol documentation describes current behavior, and its HTTP implementation reference lists reconnect options and defaults. That does not establish that an older, customized, or differently built binary supports the same options. If FFmpeg reports an unknown option, check ffmpeg -version and consult documentation matching that build before adapting the command.
For a YouTube URL, yt-dlp’s documented support for YouTube URLs, FFmpeg as an external downloader, and standard-output workflows are alternatives—not proof of the exact process chain in your setup. Diagnose the stage that stops before changing FFmpeg’s HTTP flags.
