Build the rotation in Python, use FFmpeg to play and send the selected files, and manage the YouTube event separately in Studio or through the Live Streaming API. YouTube and FFmpeg do not provide a built-in weekly playlist scheduler: the schedule and its changeover rules are yours to define.
How the pieces fit together
A reliable setup separates four jobs:
- Inventory and validate media: record each file, its intended order, duration and schedule assignment; confirm it is readable and has the expected audio and video streams.
- Select the active sequence: Python evaluates a schedule using an explicit timezone and produces a stable list for the current window.
- Play the sequence: FFmpeg reads compatible files in order, or decodes, normalizes and re-encodes them when they are not compatible.
- Manage the YouTube event: configure the ingestion stream and create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio, or manage broadcasts with the Live Streaming API.
A YouTube liveBroadcast is the event viewers watch; a liveStream is the audiovisual feed sent to YouTube. FFmpeg sends the feed, but does not create the event. See YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.

1. Model the weekly schedule explicitly
Store the schedule, not just a playlist
Each scheduled entry should identify at least the file path, its position, the applicable day or playlist, and the start and end time. Store the schedule timezone as well. “Monday at 09:00” is ambiguous without one, and daylight-saving changes can shift local times relative to UTC.
Python should select a snapshot of the active sequence at startup and at each planned boundary. Decide what a boundary means before implementation: start a new playlist immediately, wait for the current file to finish, or restart the encoder. Those are design choices, not behavior supplied by YouTube or FFmpeg.

Choose a changeover strategy
The simplest approach is to generate a new concat list at a changeover and restart FFmpeg. If the schedule must change without restarting the encoder, the process needs an explicit mechanism for receiving new media or segments; do not assume that editing a list file while FFmpeg is reading it will update the running sequence.
Also define what happens when a playlist is empty, a scheduled file is missing, or a changeover occurs mid-file. A robust scheduler should log the selected playlist and current file, report failures clearly, and have a deliberate fallback rather than silently sending no content.
2. Inventory and validate the media
Before building the live sequence, probe every input with your installed FFmpeg tools. Check that the file opens, has the expected audio and video streams, and reports a sensible duration. For concat-demuxer use, compare codecs, stream layout, time bases, dimensions and frame rates across the files; matching only the filename extension is not enough.

- Reject or repair missing or unexpected audio/video streams before the scheduled broadcast.
- Test transitions between representative files, especially where durations or encoding settings differ.
- Keep media paths predictable and ensure the account running FFmpeg can read them.
- Confirm the installed FFmpeg version and verify current YouTube encoder settings before relying on a copied command.
Duration matters: the concat demuxer uses duration information to assign timestamps to following files, so incorrect or missing duration metadata can cause timestamp artifacts. FFmpeg documents a duration directive for the concat list. Consult the FFmpeg formats documentation.
3. Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
Concat demuxer: compatible files, sequential playback
The concat demuxer reads a text list and presents the listed files as one sequential input. It can avoid re-encoding when the files have matching streams and compatible codec and time-base characteristics. It is not a universal joiner for arbitrary videos.

duration 840Replace the example paths and durations with your own verified media. The duration values above are illustrative seconds, not recommendations. Paths containing spaces or special characters must be escaped according to FFmpeg’s concat-list syntax.
FFmpeg enables the concat demuxer’s safe mode by default. It can reject unsafe paths or directives. Prefer appropriately trusted, relative paths; if you consider disabling safe mode, first assess the security implications of the list and every path it can reference.
Concat filter: normalize and re-encode
Use the concat filter when inputs need decoding, normalization or re-encoding to a common output format. This is the more flexible route for files whose stream characteristics do not match, but it requires an encoding step and appropriate output settings. Do not claim stream copy will work for incompatible inputs.

Concat protocol: not a general playlist
The concat protocol joins data at the file level for a limited set of container formats. It is not a general substitute for a weekly playlist. FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenation distinguishes the protocol, demuxer and filter approaches.

Set up the stream and event
YouTube’s documented recurring-event pattern allows one configured liveStream to be reused across multiple liveBroadcast events when the encoder settings remain the same; only one event in that shared-stream arrangement is live at a time. You can instead use a separate stream resource for each broadcast. Reuse offers a stable encoder configuration, while separate stream resources may suit events that genuinely need different ingestion settings. Neither pattern is universally best.

Use the correct ingestion details and protect the key
The YouTube liveStream resource contains ingestion settings. For RTMPS, use the primary ingestion URL. Depending on the encoder, enter the stream URL and stream name/key in separate fields or combine them as the encoder expects. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder guidance.
Keep the stream key private: load it from an environment variable or secret store, not committed source code, and avoid writing it to routine logs. Never put a real key in a shared script or example. Choose bitrate, resolution, frame rate and audio settings for the target quality, then check YouTube’s current encoder guidance; there is no single configuration that fits every source and connection.
5. Test the complete rotation before relying on it
- Generate the active sequence for a known date and time, and confirm that its timezone and boundary behavior match your schedule.
- Run FFmpeg against the generated list locally or in a non-public test event. Check that files play in order and transitions have no unexpected gaps or timestamp problems.
- Send a private or unlisted test event to verify the ingestion URL, key, audio/video output and YouTube event setup. A test reduces risk but cannot guarantee every later run will succeed.
- Inspect logs for the selected playlist, currently playing file, FFmpeg exit status and errors. Decide how an operator will recognize a stalled process and whether to restart it.
- Exercise failure cases: empty schedule, unreadable or missing file, encoder exit, network interruption and a schedule change while a file is playing. Define and document the recovery behavior for each.
For an unattended operation, a process supervisor or scheduled restart policy can help restart an exited encoder, but it cannot fix an invalid playlist, bad key or unavailable network. Treat restart handling, health checks and logs as parts of your own deployment, not guarantees from FFmpeg or YouTube.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one YouTube stream for recurring weekly events?
Yes. YouTube documents reusing one configured liveStream across multiple broadcasts when the encoder settings stay the same, with only one event live at a time in that arrangement.
Why does FFmpeg’s concat demuxer fail on some of my videos?
The demuxer expects compatible stream layouts and characteristics. Inputs with differing codecs, time bases or other stream properties may need normalization and re-encoding with the concat filter instead.
