If an MP4 stutters in an OBS Media Source, first find out whether the problem follows that file, then test OBS’s hardware-decoding option and reduce unnecessary scene or video workload. A large file alone does not prove the cause: resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and storage behavior can affect playback in different ways.
First identify where the stutter occurs
Before changing settings, check whether the choppy playback is confined to OBS’s preview or also appears in a recording, stream, or regular media player. Those symptoms do not necessarily have the same cause. Make two comparisons:

- Play a second MP4 in the same scene.
- Play the suspect MP4 in a simple OBS scene with as little else running as practical.
If only one file stutters, compare its codec, resolution, and frame rate with the file that plays smoothly. If several files stutter, focus first on OBS’s decoding setting and the workload of the scene and computer. These comparisons help narrow the problem; they do not, by themselves, prove a particular component is at fault.

OBS Media Source supports MP4. In its properties, the option labeled Use hardware decoding when available is off by default. The OBS Project says this setting uses the GPU to decode certain file types when the GPU has an appropriate built-in hardware decoder (OBS Media Sources, page dated January 11, 2022).

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- In OBS, open the scene containing the video and open the MP4’s Media Source properties.
- Find Use hardware decoding when available. Try enabling it, then restart playback and check whether the stutter changes.
- Try the opposite setting as well: disable hardware decoding, restart playback, and compare.
- Keep whichever setting performs better on your system. The option only helps when compatible hardware decoding is available, and it is not a guaranteed improvement for every file or computer.
Compare actual playback smoothness alongside CPU and GPU utilization, if you can observe them. Whether a codec and the installed hardware are supported matters; a higher GPU load or lower CPU load alone does not establish that playback is better.
Reduce video and scene workload
OBS lists GPU overload and system bottlenecks among possible causes of performance problems. Complex scenes and other GPU-heavy applications can compete for resources OBS needs. The OBS Project recommends trying lower-resolution media when the source does not need to retain its full resolution (Encoding Performance Troubleshooting).

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Try a simpler scene
- Test the MP4 in a scene with fewer active sources and effects.
- Close GPU-heavy applications you recognize and do not need during the test.
- Compare playback before and after each change so you can tell which one made a difference.
Test a lower-resolution copy
If the video’s resolution is much higher than the size at which it appears in your scene, make or export a lower-resolution copy and compare playback. Check both smoothness and visual quality at the video’s actual displayed size. Lower resolution is a workload-reduction test, not evidence that file size by itself caused the stutter; it may also change export time and storage needs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
File size, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec complexity, and storage behavior are different variables. The size of an MP4 alone is not enough to identify the bottleneck. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide provides format context, but does not establish a specific remedy for this symptom.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Check compatibility with VLC Video
If the issue appears specific to one file or its format, test OBS’s VLC Video source as a compatibility check. This source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC to be installed. OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. VLC Video may behave differently with a particular file, but its availability does not mean it will fix stuttering.
When the stutter continues
If these checks do not narrow it down, collect the details that distinguish a file issue from a decoding or workload issue:

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Your operating system and OBS version.
- The MP4’s codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Whether the same file stutters in a regular media player.
- Whether stuttering appears only in the OBS preview, or also in a recording or stream.
- An OBS log from a session in which the problem occurs.
Use those details to guide further diagnosis rather than assuming a GPU, drive, or other component needs replacement. Community phrases such as “drops video frames” or “choppy” can describe the symptom, but do not identify its cause.
