If your iPad has no sound, start audio in the affected app and raise the volume while it plays. Then check Silent Mode and the selected audio destination in Control Center, and test whether sound works through headphones or the built-in speaker. These checks help distinguish a setting or connection issue from a speaker problem that may need service.
1. Raise the volume while audio is playing
Play a song, video, or other audio in the app where the problem occurs. Press the iPad’s volume-up button or open Control Center and move the volume slider up. The buttons control media volume during playback; at other times, they control ringer and alert volume, according to Apple’s iPad volume guide.

2. Check Silent Mode and the playback destination
Make sure Silent Mode is off
Open Control Center and check Silent Mode. It does not mute music, podcasts, movies, or TV shows, Apple notes, so if media is still silent, continue to the next check rather than assuming Silent Mode explains it. Apple’s iPad volume guide describes the setting’s effect.

With audio playing, check the playback destination in Control Center or on the Lock Screen. Select iPad to use its built-in speaker, or select the Bluetooth device you intend to use. Audio can be routed to a selected Bluetooth accessory; Apple says the destination returns to iPad if that accessory moves out of range. See Apple’s Bluetooth playback guide.

3. Compare sound from the speaker and headphones
Test the same audio through the built-in speaker and, if available, headphones. Use the result to narrow down which part of the audio path to check:
- Headphones work, but the iPad speaker does not: Check the speaker opening and the sound slider in Settings.
- The speaker works, but headphones do not: Check the headphones’ connection and test another pair.
- Neither works: Recheck volume and playback destination, then try audio in another app to see whether the issue is limited to one app or affects playback more broadly.
- Only one app is silent: Check that app’s playback settings or support. This symptom alone does not establish that the app is at fault.
If headphones are silent
Check the port, cable, connector, and earbuds for debris, damage, or a loose connection. Confirm the volume is up, then test a second pair. Apple recommends contacting Apple Support if the second pair also fails. See Apple’s headphone troubleshooting guidance.

4. Check the built-in speaker opening
Remove any case or film that might cover the speaker, then look for dirt or blockage around the opening. If cleaning is necessary, Apple advises: “If necessary, clean the speaker or receiver opening with a small, soft-bristled brush. Make sure the brush is clean and dry.” Use a clean, dry brush and avoid pushing debris into the opening. This is Apple’s guidance in its speaker troubleshooting article.

5. Test the speaker in Settings
Open Settings, then Sounds or Sounds & Haptics—the label can vary by iPadOS version and device. Move the Ringtone and Alerts slider and listen for a tone. Apple says the speaker may need service if no sound is heard or if the speaker button beside that slider is dimmed. Its speaker guidance explains these signs.

6. When to contact Apple
Arrange service through Apple’s local support route if the Settings test produces no sound or the speaker control is dimmed. Contact Apple Support if a second headphone pair also fails. Service options, repair prices, and warranty eligibility depend on your country and iPad; check with Apple for what is available for your device.
