If your ROG Xbox Ally charges through its dock but the TV or monitor says “No signal,” treat it first as a video-path or HDMI handshake problem—not proof that the handheld is dead. Check the selected display input, reseat every connection, verify dock power, remove accessories, and force-restart the Ally before changing Windows settings. The dock-to-handheld connection must carry both USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode video and USB Power Delivery; a charge-only or incompatible USB-C path can power the Ally without producing a picture.
The procedure below is written for the ROG Bulwark Dock DG310 and similar Xbox Ally dock setups. It separates a failed display connection from a handheld that will not start, then gives you a clear point at which to contact ASUS support.

What a dock “no signal” message actually means
A dock does not create video from power alone. The USB-C link between the Ally and dock has to negotiate DisplayPort Alt Mode for video and USB Power Delivery for charging. ASUS ROG states that the DG310 “works over a single USB-C cable with devices that support USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery.” If either part of that connection is missing, the Ally can appear to charge while the HDMI output remains blank.

A black TV screen and a dead handheld are different failure modes:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Black screen or “No signal,” but the Ally has lights, fan noise or other activity: start with the HDMI input, cable, dock power and USB-C connection.
- No LED, no fan, no response to the Power button, or no start even when plugged in: isolate the handheld without the dock and follow the power-and-restart checks. Continued failure can require service.
- Picture appears but Windows controls are awkward: that is an operating-mode issue rather than a missing HDMI signal. Armoury Crate SE’s Desktop Mode is the relevant software feature.
Do not assume that a dock which charges USB accessories is delivering a valid video signal. Charging and video negotiation can fail independently.
Know what the ROG Bulwark Dock DG310 can output
The DG310 has one HDMI 2.1 output and is designed to drive one external TV or monitor at a time. ASUS lists the following capabilities; the actual result depends on the connected Ally, HDMI cable and display.
| Dock feature | Documented specification | What it means while troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| External video output | One HDMI 2.1 port; one external display at a time | A second display cannot be used as a simultaneous output through this dock. |
| Maximum listed modes | Up to 3840×2160 at 144 Hz, or 7680×4320 at 30 Hz | The Ally, cable and TV or monitor must all support the mode you select. |
| Features listed by ASUS | HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low-latency mode (ALLM) | These features are conditional on the handheld, cable and display; they are not evidence that every setup will negotiate successfully. |
| Device power output | Up to 80 W to the handheld | Full output requires a suitable USB-C PD charger connected to the dock. |
| Recommended dock supply | USB-C PD charger rated at 100 W or higher | The charger is user-supplied; ASUS says one is not included. |
| Other ports | Three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, Gigabit Ethernet and USB-C power input up to 100 W | Disconnect these accessories while isolating a display fault. |
| Host connection | Fixed 60 cm USB-C cable | Inspect the fixed cable and its connector for looseness or damage; it is the dock-to-Ally video and power path. |
| Console behavior | Automatic TV Game Mode when a ROG Xbox Ally is connected | If no picture appears, establish a basic HDMI image before troubleshooting game-mode behavior. |
These limits explain why a high-refresh or high-resolution combination can fail even when a lower-demand setup works. ASUS cautions that achieved resolution and refresh rate depend on the handheld, HDMI cable and monitor or TV.
Fix the physical connection first
1. Select the HDMI input that the dock actually uses
Use the TV or monitor remote to select the exact HDMI input containing the dock’s cable. TVs often retain the last-used input, while monitors may have separate HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 entries. A correct cable connected to the wrong selected input produces the same message as a failed dock.
With the display on the selected input, reseat both ends of the HDMI cable. Unplug it from the dock and the display, push each plug fully home, and check for bent, loose or damaged connectors. Also reseat the dock’s power input and the fixed USB-C host cable at the Ally. Do not rely on a partially inserted USB-C plug simply because the battery icon shows charging.

2. Cross-test the display path
Change one variable at a time so you can identify the failed part:
- Connect another known-working source to the same TV or monitor input. If that source is also blank, investigate the display or input before the Ally dock.
- Try the Ally dock with another known-good HDMI cable. A cable that cannot handle the requested resolution or refresh rate can prevent a stable picture.
- If available, try another TV or monitor with the dock. Keep the Ally, dock and power supply unchanged during this test.
- Return to the original display after each test and note which exact combination produces an image.
Do not infer that an HDMI 2.1-labeled cable guarantees a picture. Damage, poor seating, display compatibility and the selected mode can all interrupt the handshake.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVerify dock power, even when charging appears to work
Connect the Ally’s original charger to the dock when testing, or use a compatible USB-C Power Delivery supply. The DG310 requires a user-supplied charger; ASUS recommends a 100W-or-higher PD charger for the dock’s full 80W device output. A lower-capacity or unsuitable supply may still light the dock or charge a peripheral while leaving insufficient margin for a reliable handheld-and-display connection.
Use a direct wall outlet while diagnosing the problem. Temporarily remove USB drives, controllers, Ethernet and other accessories from the dock. This eliminates extra power demand and removes devices that might complicate startup. Once video works with the minimal setup, reconnect accessories one at a time.
If the Ally charges but the display remains blank, do not stop testing. USB Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode are separate parts of the same USB-C connection, so charging status alone does not prove that video negotiation succeeded.

Remove accessories and restart the Ally
3. Give a possibly empty battery time to recover
If the Ally may be fully discharged, connect the original charger and leave it charging for 15–20 minutes before attempting another start. A handheld with too little charge may show no useful display behavior while connected to a complex dock setup.
4. Perform a forced restart
After the charging interval, disconnect the dock and all accessories. Hold the Ally’s Power button down for 10–15 seconds, then release it. Press Power once normally and wait for startup. This is the forced-restart interval documented in ASUS-affiliated support guidance.
Do not repeatedly tap the button during the long press. The purpose is to clear a stalled power state, not to cycle the display input. If the Ally starts undocked, let Windows load fully before reconnecting the dock.
5. Start the Ally by itself
For this isolation test, remove:
- the dock and its fixed USB-C host connection;
- USB devices connected to the dock or handheld;
- the microSD card; and
- any other accessories that are not needed to start Windows.
Press Power with only the Ally and its charger connected. A successful undocked startup points back toward the dock, HDMI path, power supply or accessory combination. Failure to start even in this stripped-down state is no longer an ordinary “no signal” problem and should be handled as a handheld power or hardware fault.
Reconnect in a minimal order
Once the undocked Ally reaches Windows, rebuild the setup without adding variables. This order is a practical isolation method based on ASUS’s accessory-removal and restart guidance; it is not a guaranteed ASUS-required sequence.

- Shut down unnecessary applications and leave USB accessories disconnected.
- Connect the dock’s USB-C PD charger and confirm that the dock is receiving power.
- Connect HDMI from the dock to the known-selected input on the TV or monitor.
- Turn on or wake the display and leave it on that input.
- Connect the dock’s fixed USB-C cable to the Ally.
- Wait for Windows to detect the external display before reconnecting any USB device, Ethernet cable or storage.
If the picture appears at this point, reconnect accessories individually. The item added immediately before the next failure is the most useful lead. If the picture does not appear, repeat the test with the alternate known-good HDMI cable or display identified earlier.
Match the display mode to the weakest component
The DG310’s headline modes are ceilings, not promises for every setup. The Ally, the HDMI cable and the TV or monitor must agree on resolution, refresh rate and optional features such as HDR or VRR. A display that cannot accept the requested combination may remain blank rather than gracefully choosing a lower mode.
Use a conservative setup for diagnosis: one display, the cable that worked in cross-testing, and the display’s ordinary input mode. After a stable image is established, increase resolution or refresh rate one setting at a time. If the screen disappears immediately after a mode change, return to the last mode that produced a picture and treat the failed combination as a compatibility limit rather than proof of a dead dock.
Remember that the DG310 has only one HDMI output. If the test involves multiple monitors, disconnect all but one and establish a single-screen image first.

When the image appears but controls are unusable
A successful HDMI picture does not necessarily mean Windows is arranged for couch or TV use. If the display works but navigating Windows with a controller is difficult, Armoury Crate SE provides Desktop Mode for the ROG Xbox Ally family. ASUS support documents the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X as supported model families, and Armoury Crate SE can be reinstalled from ASUS support if it was removed.

Do not reinstall Armoury Crate SE as the first response to a blank screen. Software and operating-mode checks belong after the physical HDMI, USB-C, power and restart tests. A missing application cannot repair a disconnected DisplayPort Alt Mode link.
Use the symptoms to choose the next test
| Observed symptom | Most useful next action | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| TV says “No signal,” but Ally lights or starts | Verify input, reseat HDMI and USB-C, then cross-test cable and display. | The handheld is active; concentrate on the video path and handshake. |
| Ally charges through dock, but no image appears | Test with the original or adequately rated PD supply and a known-good HDMI cable. | Charging has not proved that DisplayPort video negotiated. |
| Dock works with one display or cable but not another | Use the working combination and compare the failed display, input or cable. | The failure is tied to compatibility, capability, seating or damage in the changed component. |
| Ally will not start while docked | Disconnect the dock, remove accessories and microSD, charge 15–20 minutes, then hold Power for 10–15 seconds. | Undocked startup separates a dock problem from a handheld power-state problem. |
| No LED, fan or other sign of life undocked | Stop changing HDMI settings and contact ASUS support after the documented charging and forced-restart attempt. | The likely fault is inside the handheld’s power hardware rather than the TV path. |
| Picture works, but controls are awkward in Windows | Use Armoury Crate SE Desktop Mode; reinstall it from ASUS support only if necessary. | The HDMI path is functioning; the remaining issue is software mode or interface setup. |
When to stop troubleshooting and contact ASUS
Escalate when the Ally has no signs of life, refuses to start while plugged in, or remains faulty after you have removed the dock and accessories, charged it, performed the forced restart and tested the display path. ASUS notes that a persistent failure can involve hardware such as the battery, Power button or motherboard and may require service.
When contacting support, record the exact dock model, the charger used, the TV or monitor model, the HDMI cable tested, whether the Ally starts undocked, and which step changed the symptom. Tell support whether the dock charges the Ally, whether any HDMI input works, and whether the screen is completely black or shows an intermittent signal. Those details distinguish a dead handheld from a dock-to-display negotiation failure and reduce repeated basic tests.

- Keep a known-good HDMI cable available for isolation testing.
- Use a suitable USB-C PD charger with the dock instead of assuming any USB-C charger can provide the required output.
- Insert the fixed USB-C host connector fully and avoid placing sideways strain on it.
- When a high-refresh or high-resolution mode fails, return to the last working mode before reconnecting accessories.
- After a successful setup, add USB devices one at a time so a future failure has an identifiable trigger.
The key diagnostic rule is simple: establish a picture with the Ally undocked and the dock stripped to power, HDMI and its host USB-C cable. If that minimal chain works, expand the setup carefully. If the Ally cannot start even without the dock, the TV is no longer the primary suspect.
