How to Fix Multiplayer Connection Problems During a Halloween Game Night

Start with evidence, not random router changes. Find out whether nobody can connect or only one guest is failing, run each platform’s connection test and note NAT type and speeds, then restart the game, devices, modem and router in sequence. A temporary Ethernet test is the fastest way to separate Wi-Fi trouble from an internet or NAT problem. If NAT remains strict, investigate the router path and use only the ports documented for that specific game and platform.

Use this order when the game night is already underway

  1. Scope the failure: test whether every player is affected or just one person.
  2. Capture a baseline: run the console or PC platform’s built-in connection test and write down NAT type, download result and upload result before changing settings.
  3. Restart in stages: close the game, restart the console or PC, then restart the modem and router. Retest after each change so you know which action helped.
  4. Try Ethernet temporarily: connect one affected device by cable. This is a reversible test for Wi-Fi interference, not a guaranteed cure for a restrictive NAT or an ISP outage.
  5. Investigate NAT only when the evidence points there: check for two routers, update router firmware and consult the game’s official networking instructions before enabling port rules.

This sequence favors quick, reversible checks over changes that affect the whole household. It also prevents a common mistake: forwarding ports or replacing equipment before you have established what is actually failing.

First, determine who is affected

When one guest cannot join

If everyone else can enter the same lobby but one person cannot, Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance points first toward that player’s network. Have the affected guest run the same connection test as a player who can join, then compare NAT type and the reported speeds. This comparison is more useful than a general claim that “the internet is fine,” because web browsing can work while peer-to-peer matchmaking is blocked.

When nobody can join

If every player fails, the likely scope is wider: the host’s local network, router, internet service path or the game service. Test a second online application on the same connection to establish whether the problem is limited to the title. Do not assume that a single failed lobby proves a service outage; record the platform test first, then check the game publisher’s current status information if the connection test is normal.

Record a connection-test baseline

Use the network or internet section of the console, launcher or operating system and choose its built-in connection test. Menu names differ by platform, so use the option labeled Test connection, Test internet connection or equivalent. Run it on the device that cannot join and, if possible, on one that can.

  • NAT type: record the exact label or number, such as Open, Moderate, Strict, Type 2 or Type 3.
  • Download result: note the measured value and units.
  • Upload result: note the measured value and units.
  • Connection method: write down Wi-Fi, Ethernet, mobile hotspot or another link.
  • Time and device: include the console or PC and the time of the test, since conditions can change during the event.

Save these values before rebooting. A second test after each intervention tells you whether the NAT classification or throughput changed, instead of leaving you to guess.

Restart without losing your baseline

Restarting is worthwhile, but do it in a controlled order. First leave the multiplayer session and fully close the game rather than leaving it suspended. Restart the console or PC and try the connection again. If the failure remains, restart the modem and router, allow them to finish booting, and rerun the platform test.

Retest after each stage. If closing and reopening the game fixes the issue, no network change was necessary. If a device restart fixes it, note that result. If only the modem/router restart helps, the fault was likely in the local network state or its connection to the provider, although a single successful retry does not prove a permanent fix.

Use Ethernet as a diagnostic test

A cable removes the radio link between the affected device and the access point. Connect the console or PC directly to the router with Ethernet, disable Wi-Fi on that device if it does not switch automatically, and run the same connection test and matchmaking attempt. Compare the result with the original Wi-Fi baseline.

Nintendo Switch Wired Internet LAN Adapter by HORI Officially Licensed by Nintendo, Case
  • Officially Licensed by Nintendo
  • LAN Adapter for Nintendo Switch
  • Fast and stable wired internet connection
  • Perfect for online multiplayer
  • Plugs into Nintendo Switch Dock
  • Works on Ethernet but not Wi-Fi: investigate wireless interference, distance, congestion or the access point. You have isolated a local Wi-Fi path problem.
  • Fails on both: a cable is unlikely to solve the underlying issue; continue with NAT, router, service-path or account checks.
  • Improves but remains unreliable: keep Ethernet for the event if practical, then investigate the wireless network later.

For a Nintendo Switch dock that has no built-in LAN port, Nintendo says a USB LAN adapter is required to establish a wired connection. Use a compatible adapter and connect it to the dock before repeating the test. A standard Ethernet cable is the relevant accessory for a compatible console, PC, router or adapter.

PlayStation recommends a wired connection where possible for Remote Play. Its support guidance lists a minimum of 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download, with 15 Mbps or more in both directions recommended for best Remote Play performance. Those figures apply specifically to Remote Play; they are not universal bandwidth requirements for every multiplayer game, and they do not by themselves resolve a strict NAT.

What NAT has to do with joining friends

Network address translation (NAT) lets multiple private devices share one public address supplied by an internet provider. The router tracks which device should receive each incoming response. That behavior is normally invisible when you browse the web, but multiplayer games may need a direct peer connection or an inbound response that a restrictive NAT will not permit.

Nintendo explains that stricter NAT types can prevent online activities such as connecting with other players. Activision describes Moderate or Type 2 NAT and Strict or Type 3 NAT as conditions that can limit peer connections. A mismatch between two players’ NAT environments can therefore make a one-to-one join fail even when both players can access websites and online services.

Do not treat the label as a universal ranking across every platform. Record the exact terminology your device reports and compare it with the game’s own support documentation. A player who can host one title may still be unable to join another because games use different networking paths.

If NAT is restrictive, check the network path before changing ports

Look for two routers

Two devices performing routing and NAT can create a double-NAT path. Examples include an ISP gateway connected to a separate personal router or mesh system. Check which device provides the internet connection and which device provides Wi-Fi. If both are routing, follow the manufacturers’ guidance for using one in bridge or access-point mode, or ask the provider which device should handle NAT. Make one change at a time and rerun the platform test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check firmware and automatic discovery

Verify that the router is running current firmware. If the game’s official guide supports Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), check whether UPnP is enabled and whether the router reports a successful mapping when the game runs. Availability and behavior vary by router, platform and title; do not enable features blindly on a managed network.

Use port forwarding only from the game’s own instructions

Port forwarding creates a persistent rule that sends specified traffic to one device on the private network. It can help when the title documents a required port, but a rule copied from another game can be irrelevant or send traffic to the wrong device. Activision explains the concept and provides platform-specific guidance; follow the instructions for the exact game and platform you are using. PlayStation identifies UDP port 8572 for Remote Play, which is an example for that service rather than a general multiplayer port.

Give the target device a consistent local address only when the router or game instructions require it, and remove experimental rules that do not help. Port changes affect the household network and are less reversible than a restart or cable test, so record the original settings before editing them.

When the household network is not under your control

School, hotel, workplace and some apartment networks may block inbound traffic or isolate devices. Mobile and fixed-line providers can also place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, where you do not receive a directly reachable public address. In these situations, repeatedly changing a home router cannot create an inbound path that the provider does not offer.

Contact the network operator and describe the measured NAT type, the game and platform, and whether Ethernet changed the result. Ask whether the connection uses carrier-grade NAT, client isolation or another inbound restriction. At a hotel or school, request the supported gaming policy rather than attempting to bypass controls.

Choose the least disruptive fix first

Action Speed to try Reversibility Coverage Evidence it provides
Close and reopen the game Very fast Fully reversible One session Shows whether the game session was stale
Restart the console or PC Fast Fully reversible One device Shows whether the device’s network state was stuck
Restart modem and router Fast, but interrupts everyone Reversible Whole household Tests local routing and the provider link
Temporary Ethernet cable Fast if a cable is available Fully reversible One device Separates Wi-Fi trouble from internet or NAT trouble
Firmware or UPnP review Moderate Usually reversible Potentially whole household Tests router capability and automatic mappings
Port forwarding Slowest during an event Persistent until removed Usually one device, with router-wide effects Useful only when the game documents the required ports
Provider support Depends on response time Does not alter local settings Whole connection Clarifies carrier-grade NAT or service restrictions

For a last-minute party, work from the top of the table downward. A measured NAT result or a Wi-Fi-versus-Ethernet comparison is stronger evidence than a guess based on the age of the router.

Branch-specific playbooks

Only one guest still fails after restarting

  1. Have that guest repeat the platform test and record NAT and speeds.
  2. Compare the result with a guest who can join.
  3. Try Ethernet on the affected device, or a different permitted network if the event rules allow it.
  4. If the NAT remains strict, inspect that guest’s router topology and provider restrictions.
  5. Use only the game’s documented UPnP or port-forwarding procedure, and undo temporary rules that do not change the result.

Because the rest of the lobby works, changing the host’s router first is unlikely to address this branch.

Every guest fails on the same household connection

  1. Run the connection test on the host and a second device.
  2. Restart the game, then the host device, then the modem and router, retesting at each stage.
  3. Connect one device by Ethernet to distinguish Wi-Fi from the shared internet path.
  4. Check whether another online service works from that network.
  5. If all tests remain abnormal, contact the ISP or check the game service’s official status rather than forwarding random ports.

Players can join but experience lag

First separate connection failure from performance trouble. Record whether the platform test changes on Ethernet and whether only Wi-Fi users are affected. A cable can reduce wireless interference, but it cannot repair an overloaded provider path or a restrictive NAT. Keep the wired connection for the event if it is stable, then investigate the wireless network and service path after the game night.

Common mistakes that waste game-night time

  • Changing several settings at once: you lose the ability to identify the effective change and may create a new fault.
  • Assuming web access proves multiplayer compatibility: browsing usually does not require the same peer-connection path as a game.
  • Using another title’s port list: requirements vary by game, platform and service.
  • Confusing bandwidth with NAT: faster download service does not automatically make an inbound peer connection possible.
  • Blaming Wi-Fi before testing Ethernet: a cable is a quick diagnostic, not merely an upgrade purchase.
  • Ignoring the network owner: hotel, school, workplace and carrier-grade NAT restrictions require the provider or administrator, not endless home-router edits.
  • Forgetting the original settings: photograph or record router rules before making persistent changes so you can restore them.

A printable Halloween game-night checklist

  • Before guests arrive, confirm every console or PC is updated and each player can reach the game’s online menu.
  • Keep an Ethernet cable available for a quick isolation test.
  • If using a Switch dock without a built-in LAN port, have a compatible USB LAN adapter ready.
  • When trouble starts, identify whether the failure affects one player or everyone.
  • Run and record the platform connection test before changing settings.
  • Restart the game and device, then the modem and router, testing after each step.
  • Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet results on one affected device.
  • Only after the evidence points to NAT should you inspect double NAT, firmware, UPnP or documented port rules.
  • If the network is managed by an ISP, school, hotel or carrier, contact that operator with your recorded results.

The practical goal is not to make every NAT label look identical. It is to identify the failing link quickly, apply the smallest reversible fix, and avoid router changes that the particular game does not require.
