Once you feel normal, refit the headset for a single sharp image, start with seated or stationary content, and change movement and performance settings before trying smooth locomotion again. On Quest 3, begin with teleportation, snap turning, a vignette and a stable frame rate. On Steam Frame, update Steam and SteamVR, then use VR Settings > Video > Per-Application Video Settings to choose a resolution and refresh rate the computer can sustain without judder.
Stop the moment symptoms begin
Nausea, dizziness, headache, eye strain, sweating, disorientation or unusual fatigue are signals to end the session, not sensations to push through. Remove the headset, sit or lie somewhere stable, drink water if comfortable, and let your vision and balance return naturally. Meta’s Quest Health and Safety Warnings say: “Do not use the VR System until all symptoms have completely subsided for several hours.” Do not resume because you feel slightly better after a few minutes; symptoms can return quickly and may last longer after repeated exposure.

Seek medical advice if symptoms are serious, unusual for you, or persistent. Meta’s safety guidance specifically says to see a doctor for serious or persistent symptoms. VR discomfort is usually a sensory conflict, but a clinician should evaluate symptoms that do not follow the normal pattern of stopping after rest.

VR motion sickness is also called visually induced motion sickness. Meta Horizon OS Developers’ comfort guidance, updated December 17, 2025, describes the trigger plainly: “Motion sickness can occur when there is a mismatch between what the user sees and how they move.” Your eyes may see forward acceleration, a turn or a moving virtual camera while your inner ear and muscles report that your head and body are stationary. The disagreement can produce nausea, dizziness, sweating and disorientation.

The headset itself is only one part of the experience. A comfortable headset running an app with abrupt acceleration can feel worse than a less capable headset running a carefully designed app. The important variables are locomotion design, camera movement, frame-rate consistency, image clarity, fit and the visual references available around the edges of your view.
Prepare either headset before changing advanced settings
Make one clear image
Fit the headset so the picture is sharp across the area you actually look through. If the image is doubled, smeared or difficult to focus, stop and refit before testing movement. On Quest 3, adjust the IPD until virtual objects look natural and comfortable. Meta explains that matching IPD can minimize visual strain and help you maintain focus. Steam Frame users should likewise adjust the headset position and lens spacing available on their device until text and distant objects are clear without forcing the eyes to converge.
Start with low-motion content
After symptoms have fully cleared, choose an experience that keeps you seated or mostly stationary. Meta advises people who are new to VR, or who have a history of motion sickness, to begin with comfortable apps that involve little movement and progress gradually. A calm environment, menu scene or stationary game is a better first test than a roller coaster, vehicle simulator or app with an automatic camera.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMake the play area safe
Use the headset’s boundary system and keep furniture, pets and other obstacles out of reach. Disorientation can make a collision more likely even when the original sickness trigger is purely visual. Remain seated while recovering, and do not use a moving platform, stairs or a place where losing balance would be dangerous.
Try a stable real-world reference
A fan aimed gently toward your face, or another unmoving reference in the room, is a reasonable comfort experiment. It may help some people orient themselves, but it is a practical suggestion rather than a result established by the cited Meta or Valve guidance. Stop using it if the airflow, noise or temperature becomes distracting.
Quest 3: settings and habits to change first
1. Choose teleportation instead of smooth movement
Open the comfort or locomotion options inside the app you are using. Select Teleport, Point-and-teleport or the equivalent instead of continuous or smooth locomotion. Teleporting removes the sustained visual flow that commonly causes the strongest mismatch. Meta’s comfort guidance says to “Favor options like teleportation and snap turning, and offer customizable settings for user preferences and abilities.”

Use a stationary play style until you can complete several short sessions without symptoms. If the app has a seated mode, enable it and keep the virtual camera at a natural height.
2. Turn on snap turning
Replace smooth thumb-stick rotation with Snap Turn. Choose the smallest angle that still feels practical, then increase it only if needed. Smooth rotation makes the entire scene sweep across your vision while your body remains still; snap turning limits that optic flow to a brief jump. Avoid apps that force a moving camera or automatic head-bob when you are rebuilding tolerance.
3. Add a vignette during movement
If an app provides Vignette, Peripheral Reduction or a similar comfort control, enable it for smooth movement. The effect darkens or narrows the outer edges of the display while you move, reducing the amount of peripheral optic flow. Increase the strength if symptoms begin during turning or walking; reduce it later only after repeated symptom-free sessions.
4. Avoid acceleration and abrupt direction changes
Set movement acceleration to off or its lowest available value. Prefer a constant, slow speed and avoid rapid reversals. Meta’s locomotion guidance cautions against sudden acceleration, rapid direction changes and unnatural camera movement. If the app offers independent controls for movement speed, turning speed and snap angle, change one at a time and keep notes about which combination feels comfortable.
5. Keep the frame rate consistent
Judder is a rapid, uneven visual hitch that can amplify discomfort. Meta’s locomotion best practices identify maintaining a consistent frame rate to prevent judder as a comfort measure. Lower demanding graphics options inside the app if necessary, close other intensive processes, and avoid testing a new comfort setting at the same time as a major graphics change. A lower but steady frame rate is generally preferable to a higher target that repeatedly drops.
6. Use passthrough or a peripheral reference when available
Some Quest experiences can show a small amount of the real room around the edges of the display. Meta describes passthrough at the edges of the field of view as an effective comfort strategy. Enable that option if the app or system provides it, especially while turning or moving. If passthrough is unavailable, a fixed virtual cockpit, horizon line or other stable reference may provide a similar visual anchor, but the result depends on the app.

7. Check the app’s comfort information
Before launching unfamiliar content, read its comfort information in the Quest Store. Meta’s safety document says these details can cover camera motion, player motion and disorienting content or effects. Treat a higher-motion rating as a reason to postpone the app until you have established tolerance, not as a guarantee that you will become sick.
Steam Frame and SteamVR: a controlled troubleshooting sequence
1. Update before diagnosing performance
Install any Steam Frame software or device updates. If the headset is streaming from a computer, update Steam and SteamVR as well, then restart the headset, computer and relevant streaming software. Valve’s support guidance lists updating and restarting as the first troubleshooting steps because stale software can create tracking errors, rendering problems or inconsistent performance that feel like motion sickness.
2. Open per-application video controls
In SteamVR, open VR Settings > Video > Per-Application Video Settings. Select the game or experience that causes discomfort rather than changing a global setting first. Steamworks documents per-application controls for resolution and minimum refresh rate, allowing a demanding title to use a safer profile without changing every other application.
3. Lower resolution when the frame rate is unstable
Reduce the application’s render resolution one step, launch the experience and watch for judder. If the image remains readable and motion becomes smooth, keep the lower value. If symptoms persist, stop the test and reduce further or switch to a stationary mode. Do not assume the sharpest possible image is the most comfortable; dropped frames can be more disruptive than modestly reduced detail.
4. Select a refresh rate the system can sustain
Choose a minimum refresh rate that the computer can maintain consistently. Steam Frame documentation describes a default of 72 Hz when no minimum refresh rate is specified. Developers can suggest 90 Hz or other values in vrpreferences.json. These are configurable choices, not universal prescriptions: a stable 72 Hz profile can be more comfortable than a 90 Hz target that constantly misses frames.
5. Understand the documented example
Valve’s documentation includes an example profile using 2160 × 2160 resolution, 90 Hz, half-framerate throttling to 45 FPS and motion smoothing off. It demonstrates how settings can be declared; it does not mean every Steam Frame owner should copy those values. Your computer, application and sensitivity determine whether that profile is appropriate.

6. Test motion smoothing cautiously
Steam Frame preferences allow motion smoothing per application as off, on or always-on. Motion smoothing synthesizes intermediate frames when the application cannot render at the selected refresh rate. Some users find it helpful; others notice artifacts or feel worse when the scene changes quickly. Test one state at a time in a low-motion scene. If artifacts, warping or discomfort appear, return to off and lower resolution or refresh rate instead.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Steam Frame versus Quest 3: what actually matters for comfort
Neither Meta nor Valve’s guidance supports a universal claim that one headset prevents motion sickness for every person. Compare the experience and its controls rather than treating the headset name as the answer.
| Comfort factor | Quest 3 | Steam Frame | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movement controls | App-level teleportation, snap turning, vignette and acceleration options when offered | Controls depend on the SteamVR application; use its comfort menu and per-app profile | Can you disable smooth movement and automatic camera motion? |
| Frame-rate stability | Keep the application’s frame rate consistent and avoid judder | Adjust per-application resolution and minimum refresh rate in SteamVR | Does motion remain smooth during the busiest scene? |
| Fit and clarity | Set the IPD until virtual content looks natural and comfortable | Refit the headset and adjust available lens spacing for one clear image | Are text and edges clear without eye strain? |
| Content guidance | Quest Store comfort information can describe camera motion, player motion and disorienting effects | Review the application’s SteamVR comfort information and developer settings | Does the listing warn about forced camera movement? |
| Peripheral references | Passthrough at the edges may provide a stable real-world reference where supported | Availability depends on the headset, runtime and application | Can you see a fixed reference while turning? |
| Per-app tuning | Usually configured inside each application | SteamVR provides VR Settings > Video > Per-Application Video Settings | Can you save a comfortable profile for the specific title? |
Use a gradual return-to-VR plan
- Wait for a full recovery. Do not put the headset back on until symptoms have been completely absent for several hours.
- Check fit and clarity. Adjust the headset and IPD, then read stationary text for a minute without moving.
- Choose seated content. Use a calm scene with no forced camera movement and keep the boundary active.
- Run a short session. Stop while you still feel well rather than waiting for discomfort. Early sessions may be only a few minutes.
- Add one movement feature. Try teleportation first, then snap turning. Leave smooth locomotion, acceleration and vehicle scenes for later.
- Increase duration slowly. Repeat the same comfortable setup on separate days before adding speed, continuous turning or more visually intense content.
There is no universal number of minutes or sessions that guarantees adaptation. Your stopping point is the first symptom, and progress is measured by repeated symptom-free use rather than by completing a particular game or level.
Troubleshooting by symptom and situation
Nausea starts as soon as you walk virtually
Switch to teleportation, enable snap turning and turn on a vignette. If the app forces smooth movement, leave it and choose a lower-motion experience. Do not compensate by increasing speed; acceleration and rapid direction changes commonly intensify the mismatch.
Recommended Free Tools
Discomfort appears only during turning
Use snap turning, reduce the snap angle if the jump itself feels harsh, and disable smooth camera rotation. A fixed horizon or cockpit can help if the app offers one. Keep the session seated until turning is comfortable.
Best Value
The scene hitches or feels uneven
On Quest 3, lower demanding in-app graphics options. On Steam Frame, lower the per-application resolution or choose a refresh rate the computer can sustain. Test motion smoothing separately rather than enabling it automatically. Persistent judder after updates and restarts indicates a performance or tracking issue that should be solved before longer sessions.
The image is blurry or causes eye strain
Stop movement testing and refit the headset. Recheck IPD on Quest 3 and lens positioning on Steam Frame. A misaligned or double image can create strain even in a stationary scene, so comfort settings cannot substitute for correct fit.
You feel sick in one title but not another
Compare locomotion, camera behavior and performance between the applications. The uncomfortable title may use acceleration, artificial head movement, forced cutscenes or a higher render load. Save a comfortable per-application SteamVR profile where possible, and select the Quest app’s comfort options before launching.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You become disoriented after removing the headset
Sit down, keep the room still and wait until your balance and vision feel normal. Do not drive, climb or return to VR while disoriented. If the sensation is serious or does not resolve, follow Meta’s advice to seek medical care.
What not to assume
- A higher refresh-rate number is not automatically better if the system cannot hold it.
- Motion smoothing is not universally comfortable; artifacts and individual sensitivity determine the result.
- A fan, accessory or different strap may improve fit or orientation for some people, but no accessory is established here as a cure.
- One comfortable headset does not guarantee every application will be comfortable.
- There is no first-party statistic in the cited guidance that establishes a universal prevalence or success rate, so claims that a particular setting works for a fixed percentage of users should be treated skeptically.
When to stop experimenting and get medical advice
Stop using either headset and seek medical advice for serious or persistent symptoms, as stated in Meta’s Quest Health and Safety Warnings. Do not try to train through worsening nausea, repeated vomiting, faintness, severe headache, vision changes or symptoms that continue after the several-hour recovery period. A clinician can determine whether the symptoms are related to VR or require another evaluation.
