If an open-world mission objective will not update, first check whether you have missed a game-specific condition; a stalled marker is not always a technical bug. Work through the low-risk checks below before restarting or rolling back a save. Because the game and platform are unspecified, treat other games’ support instructions as examples and follow the official guidance for your own title.
1. Check the objective and its prerequisites
Read the exact objective text and the quest journal entry again. Look for another active or newly available quest that must be completed first: CD PROJEKT RED notes that a related quest can need to be finished before a blocked quest advances (The Witcher 3 support).

Check the map marker’s height, floor, or platform, not just its horizontal position. Bethesda warns that a nearby DOOM Eternal marker may be above or below the player (Bethesda Support).

Also look for a tutorial prompt or a required interaction that has not been completed. Insomniac says some tutorial sections pause the game until the prompted action is performed (Insomniac Support). Depending on the specific mission, a trigger may also require a particular playable character, elapsed in-game time, a phone call, or speaking to an NPC; Rockstar describes these dependencies for some GTA V Story Mode missions (Rockstar Support). These are examples, not rules that apply to every game.

2. Retry the step and refresh the area
If it is safe and the game allows it, repeat the interaction or objective step. The expected state may not have registered, or an NPC or enemy may not yet have reached the point the mission requires. Bethesda’s advice for a specific DOOM Eternal arena issue, for example, is to allow an escaped demon time to return (Bethesda Support).
For an objective tied to a place or character, move away and return, leave and re-enter the area, or change zones if the game offers that option. HoYoverse recommends teleporting away and returning for some progression issues (HoYoverse Help Center); ESO support lists leaving and returning or changing zones among its options (ESO Support). If the game has group play or phasing, retrying solo is an ESO-specific suggestion, not a universal fix.

3. Restart or reload the current progression state
Close the game completely, then relaunch it. If the title offers a return to character selection, interface reload, checkpoint restart, or mission restart, use the option described in that game’s official instructions. Menu names and effects vary.
A checkpoint reload can help when the current mission state is stuck, but it is not guaranteed to repair every quest. Santa Monica Studio recommends restarting from a checkpoint and, if that fails, trying the latest manual save for God of War progression problems (Santa Monica Studio Support).

4. Update the game or verify its files
Check for an available update, install it, and relaunch the game. Santa Monica Studio notes that God of War will not update while it remains open and recommends relaunching after an update is available. Its support instructions also describe verifying game files through Steam or Epic Games Launcher (Santa Monica Studio Support). Verification steps differ by launcher and platform, so use the instructions for your setup.
Some games provide an in-game resource check instead. HoYoverse’s guidance describes using Settings > Resources to verify resources (HoYoverse Help Center). Use built-in checks supported by the game; do not make arbitrary file edits or rely on unofficial console commands as general fixes.

5. Decide whether to load an older save
If restarting the checkpoint does not help, look for a manual or backup save from before the objective stopped progressing. Preserve your current save first if the game permits it. Loading an older save can erase progress made since that save was created, including side content. Insomniac describes backup saves as a workaround in certain games and warns that side-content progress may be lost (Insomniac Support).

Rockstar says that some corrupted GTA V Story Mode saves may not be recoverable and that, in some cases, a save made before a title update may be needed (Rockstar Support). 6. Contact official support if the objective is still stuck
Use the game’s official support or bug-report channel. Provide enough detail for the team to identify the trigger and reproduce the problem:
- Game title, platform, and mission or quest name.
- The exact objective wording and the last action you took before it stopped progressing.
- Which troubleshooting steps you tried and what happened after each one.
- A screenshot or short video showing the objective and relevant game state.
- Save information if requested, and whether you use mods or trainers.
CD PROJEKT RED requests quest and save details and asks players to mention mod or trainer history; HoYoverse requests screenshot or video evidence (CD PROJEKT RED Support; HoYoverse Help Center). Send save files only through the developer’s requested official channel.
