If screenshots are missing in Stellar Blade Complete Edition on Nintendo Switch 2, first press the Capture Button on the HOME Menu and look in Album. That single test separates a storage or controller problem from a game restriction. If HOME screenshots save normally, the failure is limited to Stellar Blade or a particular sequence, where Nintendo says captures may be blocked by design. If HOME capture also fails, check Album capacity, install a supported microSD Express card, update the system, and isolate the left Joy-Con 2.
Nintendo has not documented a Stellar Blade-specific screenshot bug, patch, or guaranteed in-game workaround. The reliable fix therefore depends on where capture fails: everywhere, only in the game, only in one scene, or only with one controller.

Start with the scope of the failure
Do not begin by reinstalling Stellar Blade or changing graphics options. First identify whether the Capture Button fails globally or only in the game. Nintendo’s troubleshooting path is based on four observations: the screen on which capture fails, whether every scene is affected, the state of Album storage, and whether another left Joy-Con 2 behaves differently.

| What you observe | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Capture succeeds on HOME but fails in Stellar Blade | The console and basic input path can save images; the software or a restricted sequence may be blocking capture. | Test another scene, leave menus or a cutscene, and check the software manual. |
| Capture fails on HOME as well as in Stellar Blade | The problem is not limited to the game. Storage or the capture input needs attention. | Check Album capacity, system version, microSD Express support, and controller behavior. |
| Only one cinematic, menu, or other sequence fails | A specific part of the software may intentionally disable screenshots. | Resume normal gameplay and test again outside that sequence. |
| Capture works with another left Joy-Con 2 | The first controller’s Capture Button is the likely point of failure. | Arrange service for the original left Joy-Con 2. |
| Capture fails with two left Joy-Con 2 controllers | The console may be at fault, assuming storage is available. | Contact Nintendo for console service guidance. |
Record which row matches your symptoms before changing anything. A screenshot that never appears in Album is a different problem from a screenshot that saves successfully but is difficult to find.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Confirm the normal Switch 2 capture workflow
Nintendo’s baseline procedure is simple: press the Capture Button, then open Album from the HOME Menu to view the saved image. Use this procedure without Stellar Blade running so the test has as few variables as possible.
- Press the HOME Button to leave the game and display the HOME Menu.
- Press the Capture Button once on the left Joy-Con 2.
- Open Album from the HOME Menu.
- Look for the newest image and check whether it has today’s time or otherwise appears at the end of the list.
If the image is present, the console has demonstrated that it can create and store a capture. Do not delete that test image until the rest of the diagnosis is complete; it confirms that the button, operating system, and current storage destination worked at least once.
If Album does not contain the image, repeat the test once on the HOME Menu rather than repeatedly pressing the button inside Stellar Blade. A global failure needs the system and hardware checks below.

Nintendo explains that some applications, or specific parts of games, may not support screenshot captures. The console can show the message Unable to take a capture now. This message is an indication that the request was refused at that moment; it is not, by itself, proof that your Switch 2 storage or Joy-Con 2 is defective.
Test a different scene
Return to ordinary playable action and press the Capture Button there. If the image saves during gameplay but not during a cinematic, menu, loading transition, or another particular sequence, the scope is sequence-specific. Leave that content, wait until normal gameplay is visible, and test again. A successful capture elsewhere supports the conclusion that the blocked sequence is intentional software behavior.

Check the software manual
Consult the Stellar Blade software manual for capture limitations or notices about restricted content. The manual is the appropriate place to confirm whether a named mode or scene disables system captures. Do not assume that a photo mode and a system screenshot have the same rules: a game can offer an in-game camera while the operating system still refuses a Capture Button request, or it can restrict both.
Interpret a game-only failure correctly
Official information confirms the Switch 2 release of Stellar Blade Complete Edition and Nintendo’s general capture behavior. It does not establish a Stellar Blade-specific screenshot defect, a dedicated corrective patch, or a universal setting that restores captures in blocked scenes. If HOME capture and other games or scenes work, focus on the particular content that refuses the request instead of treating the console as generally unable to save images.

A HOME Menu failure changes the diagnosis. Check storage before spending time on Stellar Blade settings. Nintendo recommends deleting or moving existing captures and using a microSD Express card to save new screenshots or copy captures from system memory.
Inspect and reduce Album usage
- Open Album from the HOME Menu.
- Review the saved screenshots and videos, paying attention to whether the collection is close to the system’s capacity.
- Delete captures you no longer need, or move them using Album’s available management options.
- Return to the HOME Menu and press the Capture Button again.
- Open Album and verify that the new test image appears.
Keep important captures backed up before deleting them. The objective of this test is not to remove a particular Stellar Blade file; it is to create enough available capture space for the operating system to accept a new image.
Know the current capacity figures
Nintendo’s storage page lists a limit of up to 15,000 screenshots in system memory and up to 15,000 screenshots on a microSD Express card when the Switch 2 is running system version 20.1.1 or higher. Those are maximum counts, not a promise that every software version or storage arrangement exposes the same capacity. Nintendo lists lower limits for older system versions.

| Storage destination | Maximum listed by Nintendo | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| System memory | Up to 15,000 screenshots | Applies to system version 20.1.1 or higher; older versions have lower limits. |
| microSD Express card | Up to 15,000 screenshots | Applies to a supported microSD Express card on system version 20.1.1 or higher; older versions have lower limits. |
These figures concern the number of screenshots Nintendo lists, not the amount of free game-installation space. A console can have room for a game update while its capture collection is at the screenshot limit, so check Album rather than relying on the free-space indicator used for software.

Check the installed system version
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select System.
- Select System Update.
- Note the installed version and allow the console to update if Nintendo offers an update and your normal update conditions are met.
Use the version number when comparing your Album capacity with Nintendo’s figures. If the console is below 20.1.1, do not apply the 15,000-per-destination figure to it; Nintendo documents lower limits for earlier versions.
Use the supported card type
Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for saving new screenshots or copying captures from system memory. Ordinary microSD cards are not the supported format for this function. If you are adding storage to solve a capture problem, verify that the product is explicitly a microSD Express card compatible with Nintendo Switch 2 rather than a standard microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card.
Insert the card according to Nintendo’s Switch 2 instructions, then return to Album and test a HOME Menu capture. If the new image saves, storage pressure was a contributing factor. If it still does not, continue with the controller isolation test instead of repeatedly swapping cards.
Isolate the Capture Button and left Joy-Con 2
Once storage is available and the system is current, test the physical input. Nintendo’s isolation rule uses a second left Joy-Con 2 to distinguish a controller fault from a console fault.

- Undock the Switch 2 console.
- Attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers to the console.
- Display the HOME Menu.
- Press the Capture Button on the left Joy-Con 2 and open Album to see whether the image was saved.
- If capture still fails, try another left Joy-Con 2 and repeat the same HOME Menu test.
Use the HOME Menu for both controller tests. Testing one controller in Stellar Blade and the other in a different scene would mix software restrictions with hardware behavior and make the result less useful.
What each controller result means
- The original left Joy-Con 2 fails, but a second left Joy-Con 2 succeeds: the original controller needs service. The working controller proves that the console can receive a Capture Button request and save the image under the same storage conditions.
- Neither left Joy-Con 2 succeeds: after storage and system-version checks, the console may need service. Keep the failed HOME Menu test and the controller comparison available when contacting Nintendo.
- Both controllers succeed on HOME but Stellar Blade still fails: return to the software-restriction path. The remaining issue is limited to Stellar Blade or the specific content being displayed.
A second controller is an isolation tool, not a requirement to buy replacement hardware immediately. Only the result in which another left Joy-Con 2 works while the first does not supports replacing or servicing the original controller.
Use the symptom pattern to choose the shortest fix
| Symptom pattern | Checks to perform | Likely resolution |
|---|---|---|
| HOME capture works; Stellar Blade fails in every tested scene | Test after leaving menus and cutscenes, read the software manual, and look for the on-screen refusal message. | The software may restrict captures; no Stellar Blade-specific fix is confirmed by Nintendo’s published information. |
| HOME capture works; only one sequence fails | Capture during ordinary gameplay before and after the sequence. | Treat the sequence as restricted unless the manual or a later official notice says otherwise. |
| HOME capture fails; Album is crowded | Delete or move captures, then test again. | Free capture capacity and retest. |
| HOME capture fails; no card is installed or the card is standard microSD | Use a microSD Express card compatible with Switch 2. | Retest saving to the supported destination. |
| HOME capture fails after storage checks; one controller works and one does not | Repeat the same test with each left Joy-Con 2. | Service the controller that fails. |
| HOME capture fails after storage checks; two controllers fail | Confirm the system version and repeat the undocked HOME Menu test. | Ask Nintendo about console service. |
The table is deliberately symptom-based. Changing several variables at once—installing a card, updating the system, reinstalling the game, and switching controllers—can make a temporary success impossible to explain. Change one relevant variable, test on HOME, and record the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Actions that are not established fixes
Nintendo’s published guidance does not document a Stellar Blade-specific patch or a guaranteed workaround involving reinstalling the game, changing graphics settings, or changing photo-mode settings. Those actions may alter unrelated software state, but there is no confirmed evidence in the official information available for this issue that they restore a failed system capture.
Do not infer a storage fault merely because a capture fails during a dramatic scene. First compare that scene with the HOME Menu and with ordinary gameplay. Conversely, do not assume a game restriction when HOME capture also fails; a full Album or unsupported card can affect every application.

Do not treat the message Unable to take a capture now. as proof that the Capture Button is broken. The same button can work on HOME while an application intentionally refuses a request. The controller comparison matters only after the HOME Menu test and storage checks.
When to contact Nintendo
Seek Nintendo’s service guidance when the failure remains on the HOME Menu after you have made storage available, confirmed the system version, and tested more than one left Joy-Con 2. Explain the exact scope: whether Album contains any new image, whether a microSD Express card was used, which system version is installed, and how each controller behaved.
If only the original left Joy-Con 2 fails while another works, identify that controller as the service candidate. If both controllers fail under the same HOME Menu conditions, identify the console as the possible service candidate. This information is more useful than reporting only that Stellar Blade screenshots are missing.

For a game-only or scene-only refusal, service is not the first remedy. Keep using the HOME Menu test to confirm that the console still captures, and consult the software manual for restrictions. A later official Stellar Blade or system update could change behavior, but no dedicated screenshot fix is confirmed here.
A complete recovery checklist
- Press the Capture Button on the HOME Menu.
- Open Album and verify whether a new image appears.
- If HOME succeeds, test Stellar Blade during ordinary gameplay outside menus, cutscenes, or the sequence that failed.
- If the game refuses capture and displays Unable to take a capture now., check the software manual and treat the affected content as potentially restricted.
- If HOME fails, review Album and delete or move captures that are no longer needed.
- Check System Settings > System > System Update and note whether the console is on version 20.1.1 or higher before applying Nintendo’s 15,000-screenshot figures.
- Use a microSD Express card compatible with Switch 2 if you need another supported capture destination; a standard microSD card is not the supported format for this function.
- Undock the console, attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers, and repeat the HOME Menu test.
- Try another left Joy-Con 2. Service the original if only the second controller works; ask about console service if neither works.
- Keep the final test result, system version, storage destination, and exact failure message together when seeking support.
This sequence fixes the conditions Nintendo identifies and avoids promising a game-specific remedy that has not been documented.
