If New Outlook looks unfamiliar or a command seems to be missing, first check its display settings; the control may simply be elsewhere. If a whole workflow is absent, check Microsoft’s feature comparison—New Outlook and classic Outlook do not have identical capabilities. Use classic Outlook for work it cannot yet handle, and check account, administrator, and installation restrictions if the switch option is missing.
First, identify which Outlook you have open
Windows has separate applications for New Outlook and classic Outlook. The directions below for Settings and ribbon customization apply to New Outlook. To find the classic app, search the Windows Start menu for Outlook (classic). Confirm the app before troubleshooting: a missing control may be a difference between the two versions rather than a setting that has been turned off.

Fix a layout or ribbon that looks wrong
- Open Settings: In New Outlook, select the gear icon. Choose the View tab for quick display options.
- Choose a ribbon size: Switch between the larger, classic-style ribbon and the smaller simplified ribbon, depending on which arrangement is easier to use.
- Customize simplified-ribbon commands: If you use the simplified ribbon, select Customize to adjust which commands are visible.
Microsoft says changes made in New Outlook Settings are reflected in Outlook on the web. If changing the view and ribbon does not reveal the command or capability you need, check whether that feature exists in New Outlook.
Check whether New Outlook supports the missing feature
Use Microsoft’s New Outlook and classic Outlook feature comparison. Its status labels distinguish between a feature that is fully available, partially available, unsupported, upcoming, under investigation, or revised. “Partially available” means some capabilities are missing compared with other Outlook versions; “Revised” means the implementation differs. These labels describe particular workflows, so check the row for the specific function you rely on rather than assuming an entire category works or fails.

For example, Microsoft’s comparison marks VBA macros, COM add-ins, network-share file access, and custom forms as unsupported in New Outlook. It marks offline support and PST support as partially available, with some parts of PST workflows still unavailable. The matrix also includes upcoming and revised items, so not every difference is a permanent removal. Microsoft says the list is not exhaustive; some capabilities require a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription and a work or school account. The matrix was last updated September 23, 2026, and its statuses can change.
Choose the right workaround
| Option | Best when | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Adjust New Outlook | The issue is the arrangement of the interface or a command’s visibility. | Use Settings > View and, if applicable, Customize in the simplified ribbon. |
| Use classic Outlook for the affected task | The feature comparison shows that a required capability is unsupported or incomplete in New Outlook. | Switch to classic Outlook, or launch Outlook (classic) from Start. |
| Keep both apps available | You want New Outlook for some tasks but need classic Outlook for others. | Pin Outlook and Outlook (classic) to the taskbar or Start, then open the version suited to each task. |
Microsoft documents both pinning the applications for side-by-side use and switching from New Outlook to classic Outlook. In New Outlook, select the switch/toggle and choose the option for classic Outlook. The choices may include Use classic Outlook this time for a one-time session or Switch back to classic Outlook to change the default behavior. Wording and interface details can change, so use the option shown in your version.

When the switch to classic Outlook is missing
A missing switch can have several causes. Work through these checks in order:
- Check that classic Outlook is installed. Microsoft says the switch-back option may not appear if the classic application is not installed. Search Start for Outlook (classic).
- Check account and organization eligibility. New Outlook supports Microsoft work or school accounts, Microsoft personal accounts, and certain third-party accounts, including Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud; support varies by account and context. For a work or school account, ask your organization’s IT administrator whether switching has been blocked.
- Open classic Outlook directly. If it is installed, launch Outlook (classic) from the Windows Start menu instead of trying to open it from inside New Outlook.
- Use Microsoft’s registry procedure only if the earlier checks do not resolve it. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says to open Registry Editor and set
UseNewOutlookto0underComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0OutlookPreferences, then launch Outlook (classic) from Start. This is a targeted switch troubleshooting step, not a general way to restore a layout or add unsupported features. Take care when editing the registry; if the PC is organization-managed, contact IT before making this change.
See Microsoft’s instructions for switching back to classic Outlook and its New Outlook toggle troubleshooting guide. If the account is unsupported or the organization controls the setting, an administrator may need to resolve the issue; changing display settings will not bypass those restrictions.
