Microsoft Teams normally checks for updates at startup and every few hours, but it installs a downloaded update only when the client is idle and can restart. To fix a Teams client that stays on an old version, sign in, run Check for updates, leave Teams open until it becomes idle, verify operating-system and network prerequisites, and then use Microsoft’s documented PowerShell force-update command on Windows if necessary. Managed devices may also require an administrator to correct policy, Delivery Optimization, proxy, DNS, or Microsoft AutoUpdate settings.
What “Teams is not updating” actually means
Teams has several stages in its update process: it discovers a newer build, downloads the package, waits until the application is idle, and restarts to apply the package. A download can therefore exist without the version changing immediately. Microsoft says the desktop clients on Windows and Mac check at startup and every few hours in the background, whether the application is running or not. The user must be signed in, the client must reach Microsoft’s update services, and Teams must restart before the new build is active.

Windows uses Delivery Optimization while obtaining update payloads. macOS relies on Microsoft AutoUpdate. A computer that is shut down before Teams reaches an idle state, an account that is signed out, or an installation placed under Program Files instead of the default per-user location can prevent automatic updating.

How old is too old?
Microsoft’s 2024 lifecycle guidance describes a gradual rollout rather than a single worldwide release moment. Desktop updates are released twice each month and are phased in, so two computers can receive the same release at different times.

| Client age | What the user may see | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Current to less than one month old | No age warning is required | The device may still be waiting for its rollout ring or a normal background check. |
| One to three months old | An in-app alert appears when a newer desktop version is available | Use the update action rather than continuing to postpone restarts. |
| More than three months old | A blocking page offers update, contact-an-IT-administrator, or Teams-on-the-web options | The installed client is outside Microsoft’s supported age window for normal use. |
These age thresholds describe Microsoft’s 2024 documentation and can change with later servicing policy. They are not a promise that every tenant receives an update on the same day.
Before changing anything
Record the symptom and the installed version first. In Teams, open the profile or menu control and look for the version or About information. Note whether the app displays an update banner, whether it restarts and returns to the same version, or whether it never shows an update option. Also record whether the computer is Windows or macOS, whether it is company-managed, and whether the account is signed in. This information determines whether you can fix the problem as a user or need an administrator.
Do not begin by deleting cache folders. Microsoft warns that cache removal can erase diagnostic logs that would explain a failed update. Preserve those logs until the basic checks and any administrator investigation are complete.
Manual fix sequence for an individual user
1. Run the built-in update check
- Open Microsoft Teams and sign in with the account that normally uses the client.
- Select your profile picture or the client menu control.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Keep Teams open while it checks. If a restart prompt appears, allow Teams to restart and sign in again.
The command does not bypass every organizational restriction; it asks the client to perform the supported user-initiated check. If nothing changes, continue rather than repeatedly selecting the command in quick succession.
2. Let Teams become idle and restart cleanly
Microsoft states that Teams updates only when Teams is idle. Finish or pause calls, screen sharing, recordings, and other activity, then leave the application open for a reasonable period. Do not shut down the computer immediately after starting a check. When the client has had time to download, use the normal Teams restart option or quit and reopen it so the pending package can be applied.
If Teams is stuck in the background, close all visible Teams windows and confirm that no Teams process is still running before reopening it. On a managed computer, do not terminate processes if company policy forbids it; ask the administrator to perform the restart.
3. Confirm sign-in and connectivity
Automatic updating requires an authenticated session and access to Microsoft’s update services. Re-authenticate if Teams shows a sign-in warning, an expired password, or a disconnected account. Test the same computer on a known-good network if your organization permits it. A captive portal, VPN rule, proxy authentication failure, firewall block, DNS failure, connection timeout, or SSL inspection can let ordinary web browsing work while the update request fails.

Do not disable security software broadly to “make the update work.” Instead, have the responsible administrator verify that the Microsoft 365 endpoints required by Teams are reachable through the approved firewall and proxy path, that DNS resolves them correctly, and that SSL inspection is not breaking certificate validation.
4. Bring the operating system and prerequisites up to date
Install available Windows or macOS updates, restart, and then repeat the Teams check. Microsoft identifies unsupported or unpatched operating systems as update-reliability risks. On Windows, confirm that Microsoft Edge WebView2 is installed and is not blocked; the current Teams client depends on it for parts of its interface and update experience. If WebView2 is controlled by your organization, an administrator may need to repair or permit it.
Updating the operating system does not itself guarantee a Teams update. It removes a prerequisite failure so that the client, its updater, and its signing components can run on a supported platform.
5. Check whether the installation location is preventing automatic updates
Microsoft notes that automatic updating can fail when Teams was installed under Program Files rather than its default per-user location. This situation is common on images built by an administrator or by older deployment scripts. A standard user may not be able to correct the installation location safely. Ask IT whether the deployment is intentionally machine-wide and whether the organization has a supported package or policy for updating it. Do not copy executable files between folders or change permissions on your own; those changes can leave the installation in a state that neither Teams nor Windows can service reliably.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Force an update on Windows with Microsoft’s documented command
Use this step when the Windows client is demonstrably outdated and the normal check has not applied the release. Open PowerShell with the permissions allowed by your organization and run the exact command Microsoft publishes:
Add-AppxPackage https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2196060 -ForceUpdateFromAnyVersion -ForceTargetApplicationShutdown
The command downloads the Teams package from Microsoft and permits an update from any available version while closing the application if required. Save your work first because the Teams process can be terminated. A successful command should return control without an error and Teams should open at the newer version after the package is registered.

If PowerShell reports an access, package, network, or deployment error, copy the complete message. Do not keep changing switches or downloading installers from unofficial sites. The error usually points to a policy restriction, corrupted package, unavailable service, or insufficient permission that needs administrator attention.
7. Reset or clear cache only when the earlier steps have not helped
Cache reset is a targeted recovery action, not a universal fix for missing chats, channels, notifications, or unread counts. Microsoft specifically cautions that clearing cache for those content problems can remove useful logs without addressing the server-side or account issue.
New Teams on Windows
- Open Settings and select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Teams, open its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Reset, confirm the warning, and then start Teams and sign in again.
Reset deletes app data and personalization. Expect to authenticate again and reapply local preferences. If you need the diagnostic history, export or preserve it before resetting.
Classic or new Teams on macOS
Quit Teams completely before touching its files. Microsoft documents different cache directories for classic and new Teams; remove only the directories that match the installed client, then restart the Mac and open Teams again. Because the directory names differ by client generation and can change, use Microsoft’s current cache-cleanup instructions rather than guessing at a path. Cache removal signs you out or discards local state in some configurations, so treat it as reversible only if you are prepared to sign in and rebuild that state.
8. Verify the result
After a restart, open the client’s About or version view again and compare it with the version your organization expects. Check that calls, chat, and channel loading work before deleting any remaining logs. If the version did not change, the failure is not solved; proceed to the administrator checks instead of repeating cache resets.
Administrator checks for managed Windows and macOS devices
On a company-managed device, a user-visible “check for updates” result is often only the symptom. Microsoft’s update-failure guidance groups the underlying causes into policy, package, network, prerequisite, and service conditions.

Policy and package controls
Review Group Policy and MSIX-related settings that could block installation or application shutdown. Confirm that the deployment method matches the Teams client generation and that the account or service performing the update has the required rights. A policy that intentionally prevents MSIX updates must be changed through the organization’s change process; a user cannot safely override it.
Delivery Optimization on Windows
Verify that Delivery Optimization is enabled and functioning. Disabled or restricted Delivery Optimization can prevent the update payload from arriving even when Teams can sign in. Check the organization’s bandwidth, peer-to-peer, and service policies rather than enabling settings ad hoc on one computer.
Microsoft AutoUpdate on macOS
Teams on macOS uses Microsoft AutoUpdate. Confirm that the updater is installed, allowed to run, and not blocked by endpoint-management profiles or privacy controls. If the updater itself is outdated or damaged, repair it through the organization’s approved Microsoft software package.
Firewall, proxy, DNS, and SSL inspection
Trace the failed device’s path to Microsoft 365 update services. Look for proxy authentication loops, firewall denies, DNS responses that differ from working devices, connection timeouts, and SSL inspection that substitutes certificates. Compare a failing computer with one in the same network segment that updates successfully. Keep a timestamp, username, public or corporate network, and exact error so the network team can correlate logs.

When the update still fails
If the PowerShell force update succeeds but Teams later stops updating automatically, Microsoft indicates that the automatic-update process itself may be at fault. Treat that as a separate problem from the package installation. Preserve the successful command output, the current Teams version, Windows or macOS build, exact timestamps, and any client or Windows diagnostic logs.
- Collect Teams logs before resetting cache or uninstalling the client.
- On Windows, include the PowerShell error or success output and relevant Windows deployment events.
- On macOS, include Microsoft AutoUpdate status and the client logs from the failed attempt.
- Give your administrator the network, proxy, DNS, policy, and dashboard evidence rather than only a screenshot of the old version.
- Use the Teams admin center support path or Microsoft Support when the organization cannot resolve the failure.
Use Teams on the web temporarily if the blocking page offers that option and your organization permits it. This keeps you productive while preserving the desktop installation for diagnosis; it does not repair the desktop updater.
