A VGA “No Signal” message means the monitor has power but is not receiving a usable video signal from the computer. The most common causes are a wrong input selection, a loose or damaged VGA cable, connection to the wrong video port, or a computer that has frozen. Work through the checks below in order; most problems can be isolated without replacing hardware.
What “VGA No Signal” means
Your monitor can be switched on and still show no picture because its display electronics are not detecting a valid signal on the selected input. The message does not, by itself, prove that the graphics card or monitor has failed. LG identifies an incorrect input, a loose, damaged or incompatible cable, and an unresponsive PC as common causes. Dell notes that an amber, orange or blinking monitor LED generally means the monitor has power but is not receiving video.

VGA is an analog connection, so the monitor also has to accept the timing produced by the computer. A connection can be physically secure yet fail because the computer is using an unsupported resolution or refresh rate, the analog image needs adjustment, or an adapter is being used for an incompatible digital-only output.

- Save open work if you still have access to the computer. Unplugging or forcing a shutdown can lose unsaved changes.
- Turn the monitor and computer off before repeatedly removing and inserting a VGA plug. Tighten the VGA thumbscrews by hand; do not force a misaligned connector.
- Do not assume that a cable with a VGA-shaped plug converts a digital signal. A passive cable cannot convert a digital-only output to analog VGA; an appropriate active converter is required.
Fix the problem in this order
1. Confirm that the monitor has power
- Press the monitor’s power button and check its indicator LED.
- If the LED is off, test the wall outlet with another device, reseat the monitor’s power cord and check any external power adapter.
- If the LED is amber, orange or blinking, the monitor is usually powered but waiting for a video signal. Continue with the signal checks below.
Do not spend time changing VGA settings while the monitor itself has no power. Restore power first, then continue.

2. Select the exact VGA input
- Open the monitor’s Input, Source or Input Select menu using its physical buttons or joystick.
- Choose VGA, sometimes labeled PC or RGB, rather than Auto, HDMI, DisplayPort or another unused source.
- Wait several seconds after selecting the source. If the monitor offers an automatic source search, run it after confirming the cable is connected.
A manually selected wrong source can produce “No Signal” even when the cable and computer are working. If the menu is difficult to see, use the monitor’s control buttons to cycle through sources and pause on VGA.
3. Reseat and inspect both ends of the cable
- Turn off the monitor and computer.
- Disconnect the VGA plug from the monitor and the computer.
- Inspect the connector for bent or missing pins, dirt, damaged plastic, a loose thumbscrew or a cracked strain relief. Check the cable jacket for cuts, sharp kinks or crushed sections.
- Reconnect each end straight into the port and tighten both screws evenly by hand.
- Turn on the monitor, select VGA again and start the computer.
LG strongly recommends using the original cable supplied with the monitor. If the message remains, try another compatible VGA cable rather than repeatedly adjusting the same one. A cable can fail internally even when its exterior looks normal.
4. Plug the monitor into the correct PC port
Desktop computers may have VGA connectors on both the motherboard and a separate graphics card. If a dedicated graphics card is installed, connect the monitor to that card’s video output, not the motherboard connector. Dell identifies use of the wrong port as a common cause of “No Signal” on high-performance desktops.

- Power the computer off.
- Look at the rear of the case. The dedicated card is normally mounted lower down in a horizontal expansion slot, while motherboard video ports sit in the main rear I/O panel.
- Move the VGA cable to the dedicated graphics card’s VGA output, if it has one.
- If the card has only digital outputs, use a suitable active converter designed for that output and VGA input; a passive cable alone will not perform the conversion.
On a laptop or all-in-one, use the built-in VGA port or the manufacturer-approved docking output. Do not switch ports while the computer is running unless the hardware documentation specifically supports it.

5. Check whether the computer is actually running
- Press the Num Lock key repeatedly and watch the keyboard’s Num Lock indicator.
- If the indicator changes state, the operating system may be running and the fault is more likely to involve the display path.
- If the indicator never responds, the computer may be frozen or may not have completed startup.
- As a last resort, hold the computer’s power button until it shuts down, wait a few seconds, then start it again. This can discard unsaved work and should not be the first step.
Listen for normal startup activity and check whether storage or network indicators behave as usual, but do not treat those signs as proof that the graphics output is working.
6. Cross-test the cable, monitor and computer
Substitution is the quickest way to separate a cable or monitor fault from a PC, graphics-card or software fault. Change one component at a time and record the result.
| Test | If the picture appears | If “No Signal” remains |
|---|---|---|
| Use the current VGA cable with another known-working monitor | The original monitor, its input or its settings are suspect. | The cable or computer output remains suspect. |
| Use a known-good VGA cable with the original monitor and computer | The original cable is likely defective or incompatible. | Continue testing the monitor, port, computer and settings. |
| Connect the original monitor to another computer that has a compatible VGA output | The original computer, graphics card, driver or port is suspect. | The monitor, input or cable is more likely at fault. |
| Connect a known-working monitor to the original computer and port | The original monitor or cable is suspect. | The computer output, graphics card, port or driver is suspect. |
Use a compatible VGA output for every comparison. Testing a VGA monitor from a digital-only port with a passive lead can create a false “bad monitor” diagnosis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Update the graphics driver from the correct manufacturer
Once the physical connections pass the tests, update the graphics driver using the computer maker’s or graphics-card maker’s support page. Identify the exact computer or GPU model and install the driver intended for that model and Windows version. A wrong or incomplete driver can prevent a valid VGA mode from being sent.

- In Windows, identify the display adapter model in Device Manager before downloading anything.
- Download the current driver from the computer manufacturer or GPU manufacturer’s official support page.
- Install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions and restart the computer.
- Reconnect the monitor, select VGA and test again.
If the problem began immediately after a driver change, use the manufacturer’s documented rollback option or reinstall the last known-working driver for that exact model. Avoid installing a driver intended for a different graphics adapter.
8. Use a supported resolution and refresh rate
A VGA monitor can show “No Signal” when the computer is sending a resolution or refresh rate outside the monitor’s supported range. If you can see Windows on another display, open Display settings and choose a resolution and refresh rate listed in the monitor’s specifications. Apply the change, then reconnect the VGA monitor.
If the screen is blank only during normal Windows startup but appears in firmware or Safe Mode, an unsupported Windows display mode is particularly likely. Select a basic supported mode, restart, and then test higher settings one at a time.
9. Run the monitor’s analog adjustment
ASUS recommends using the monitor’s Auto Adjust function for analog VGA input. Open the on-screen menu, choose Auto Adjust or Auto Configuration, and allow the monitor to recalibrate clock, phase, position and image alignment. This can correct an unstable or misaligned analog picture, although it cannot repair a missing signal.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a replacement VGA cable
Replace the cable only after reseating and cross-testing, or when inspection shows damage. Match all of the following:
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Connector type | Both devices must expose a standard VGA (DE-15) port. Do not substitute a visually similar connector without checking its pin layout. |
| Gender and fit | Most direct connections require male-to-male plugs, but verify the socket and any adapter at each end. |
| Length | Choose the shortest length that reaches comfortably; avoid unnecessary slack, sharp bends and tension on the ports. |
| Shielding and build | A well-built, shielded cable with secure strain relief is preferable, especially near power cables or other sources of electrical noise. |
| Return policy | Use a seller with a practical return option in case the cable is incompatible or the original fault lies elsewhere. |
Confirm that both the monitor and computer actually provide VGA. If one side offers only HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI-D or another digital-only output, a passive VGA lead will not work; use the appropriate active converter for that signal direction.
What the test results tell you
The monitor works with another computer
The original computer, graphics card, driver, selected port or output mode is the likely cause. Recheck that the cable is connected to the dedicated GPU, install the correct driver and choose a supported resolution and refresh rate.

A different monitor works on the same computer
The original monitor, its VGA input or its cable is more likely to be defective. Try a known-good cable and reset or auto-adjust the original monitor before arranging service.
No monitor works from the computer
Focus on the computer’s graphics output, dedicated card, port and driver. If the system also fails to start normally or the keyboard does not respond, the fault may extend beyond video output and requires computer-specific diagnosis.
Changing the cable changes nothing, but the monitor menu works
The monitor has power and its controls are functioning, but the computer may still be sending no valid signal. Verify the input, correct GPU port, driver and display mode, then test with another computer.
When to arrange professional service
Escalate after you have confirmed monitor power, selected the correct input, reseated or replaced the cable, used the correct PC port, checked that the computer runs, updated the driver, selected a supported mode and completed cross-tests. At that point, the graphics card, monitor, cable or computer may need manufacturer service.
Sony advises that if the message persists after its connection and source checks, the monitor or connecting cable may require service. Provide the service technician with the results of each cross-test, the monitor and computer models, the cable type, and whether the failure occurs before Windows starts or only after login. This information prevents repeating tests and helps identify the failed component.
