Save the PDF to your computer and open it from File Explorer first. Then test a second, known-good PDF: if several files fail, update or repair the PDF viewer and restore the .pdf file association; if only one file fails, the document itself may be corrupt, password-protected, suspicious or malformed.
Start by separating a browser problem from a Windows problem
A PDF link failing in Chrome, Edge or Firefox does not necessarily mean that PDFs are broken on your PC. The browser may be unable to download the file, or its built-in viewer may have failed while the local desktop viewer still works.

Download the file instead of opening it in the browser
- Right-click the PDF link and choose Save Link As (the wording may be Download Linked File in some browsers).
- Save the file to a familiar folder such as Downloads or Documents.
- Open File Explorer, browse to that folder and double-click the saved file.
If the downloaded copy opens, the original failure is confined to the browser tab, browser settings or the web server. You can continue using the downloaded file while you troubleshoot the browser separately.
Test more than one PDF
Open a PDF you know is valid, such as another document already stored on the computer. One file that fails points toward a document-specific problem. If every PDF or most PDFs fail, concentrate on the viewer installation, the default-app association or Windows app repair.

Choose a viewer that matches the job
Windows 10 can display PDFs in Microsoft Edge, while Adobe Acrobat Reader is a dedicated free viewer. Edge is convenient for quick reading, but a desktop Acrobat installation generally exposes more PDF features and gives you an explicit repair option.

Install or update Adobe Acrobat Reader
If no viewer is installed, install Acrobat Reader from Adobe’s official download channel. If Reader or Acrobat is already present, check for an update before changing other settings.
- Open Acrobat or Acrobat Reader from the Start menu.
- Choose Help > Check For Updates.
- Install any offered update and restart the application.
- Try the known-good PDF again from File Explorer.
An outdated or damaged viewer can fail even when the PDF files are healthy. Updating also gives you a current application before you investigate association or security settings.

Make Acrobat or Reader the default PDF program
A double-click can appear to do nothing when Windows has lost the .pdf association or is sending the file to an unsuitable application. Restore it from a PDF file’s context menu.
- In File Explorer, right-click any PDF.
- Select Open With > Choose another app.
- Select Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader. If it is not listed, browse to the installed application.
- Turn on Always use this app to open .pdf files.
- Click OK, then double-click the file again.
Adobe also documents an alternative route: right-click the file, choose Properties, select Change beside Opens with, choose Acrobat or Reader and apply the change. Test both a local PDF and a newly downloaded one after changing the association.
Repair the Acrobat installation
If the association is correct but Acrobat still will not open files, its program resources may be damaged. Acrobat includes a repair command that reinstalls or repairs those resources without requiring you to find the installer manually.

- Launch Acrobat or Reader.
- Open Help.
- Choose Repair Installation and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows when the repair finishes, then test two different PDFs.
If Acrobat cannot stay open long enough to reach the Help menu, use Windows’ app-repair controls or reinstall the viewer from Adobe’s official source.

Windows 10 exposes Repair or Reset controls for some applications. Microsoft notes that these controls are not available for every app, so the buttons may be absent for Acrobat or for your particular installation.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find the PDF application in the list and select it.
- Choose Advanced options if that link appears.
- Select Repair first. This is the less disruptive choice and is intended to preserve app data and settings.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and consider Reset. Reset is more disruptive and may remove the application’s stored settings.
After either operation, set the default .pdf app again if Windows reverted the association. If no repair or reset option is offered, uninstall and reinstall the viewer, then repeat the association steps.

Handle “Access Denied” and protected mode cautiously
Acrobat’s Enhanced Security or protected mode can block a file opened from an external or untrusted location. That behavior is a security control, not proof that the document is broken.
First copy the file to a local folder and confirm that it came from a source you trust. If a trusted file still produces an access-denied message, use Acrobat’s security preferences to temporarily change the protected-mode setting as a diagnostic step, then restart Acrobat and test the file. Re-enable the protection immediately after testing. Do not disable a security feature merely to open an unknown attachment, and do not dismiss a warning for a file whose sender or origin you cannot verify.

When one PDF fails but others open
The file may be corrupt or malformed
Adobe states that a PDF that is corrupt or damaged and will not open cannot be directly repaired. Viewer changes cannot reconstruct missing or invalid data inside that document. Ask the sender to export or send a fresh copy, or recreate the PDF from the original document or source application.

The document may require a password
A password-protected PDF can refuse to display until the correct password is supplied. Obtain the password from the creator or administrator rather than trying to bypass the protection. If the sender says no password is required, request a new export because the file may have been damaged during creation or transfer.
The file may be suspicious
Treat unexpected PDFs, especially attachments from unknown senders, as untrusted. Do not turn off Windows or Acrobat security settings just to open them. Confirm the sender through a separate channel and obtain a clean copy when appropriate.
When PDFs open in the browser but not on the computer
This pattern usually means the browser’s viewer can render the document while the desktop association or installation is wrong. Save the PDF locally, then work through the update, association and repair steps above. If the saved file opens in Edge but not Acrobat, select Edge temporarily as the default to confirm that the file itself is readable; then repair or reinstall Acrobat before switching the default back.

Windows 10 support status matters
Microsoft records that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. The PDF steps above can still resolve an application problem, but an unsupported operating system carries ongoing security and compatibility risks. If your hardware supports it, plan a move to a supported Windows release; otherwise keep especially careful backups and use trusted, current applications.
