First identify which problem you have: an inaccurate answer needs fact-checking and clearer context, while a Copilot app that hangs, fails to load, or shows missing content needs account, app, connection, or access checks. Also confirm whether you’re using personal Copilot or a work or school Microsoft 365 account; they use different account contexts and can behave differently.
If Copilot gives inaccurate or incomplete answers
Copilot can misunderstand a prompt, omit context, or return incorrect information. Microsoft’s Privacy FAQ for Microsoft Copilot advises users to review citations and double-check facts. Treat an answer as a starting point, not proof—especially before making a consequential decision.

- Check the specific claim. Open any citations attached to the response and compare the claim with reliable original sources. A citation is a lead to inspect, not a guarantee that the answer represents it correctly.
- Clarify what you asked. If Copilot may have misunderstood, state the relevant context and ask a focused follow-up. You can specify a timeframe, request evidence, change the format, or ask it to go deeper. See Microsoft’s Get started with Microsoft Copilot Chat.
- Send feedback if the response was problematic. In work or school Copilot Chat, use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down controls on the response. For personal Copilot, Microsoft describes feedback options in Settings, on the response, and in the mobile app’s Report option in its privacy FAQ. Feedback reports the issue; it does not promise an immediate correction.
If Copilot won’t respond, hangs, or shows missing content
1. Check that you’re signed in to the right account
Personal Copilot and work or school Copilot are separate experiences. For personal Copilot, select the same Microsoft, Apple, or Google sign-in method you used before; choosing a different method can take you to a different account. For work or school use, sign in with the organizational account. Microsoft explains these account differences in its Copilot Chat overview and its content troubleshooting guide.

Close and reopen the Copilot app, or refresh the Copilot web page. If content is migrating or syncing, wait a while and try again. Microsoft recommends these checks for personal-account content issues in its updated Copilot app troubleshooting guide.

3. Run Microsoft’s connection troubleshooter
If Copilot reports a connection problem, open Microsoft Get Help and run the Copilot connectivity troubleshooter. Microsoft says it checks for firewall rules and other blockers that can prevent Copilot from connecting.
4. Check the license if Copilot is missing in a Microsoft 365 app
If you expected Copilot in an eligible Microsoft 365 app but can’t find its icon, run the Copilot license troubleshooter. A missing icon is not, by itself, proof that the app is malfunctioning; verify the account and license as well.

5. Consider work or school service capacity
For work or school Copilot Chat, temporary delays or restrictions may reflect demand rather than a fault with your device. Microsoft says standard access can vary with service capacity and may be temporarily restricted during high demand; licensed users receive priority access to certain capabilities, subject to service availability. Details are in Microsoft’s standard versus priority access guidance.

Personal Copilot and work or school Copilot Chat do not necessarily draw on the same information. In work or school Chat, Work IQ controls whether organizational data—such as files, email, and meetings—can be used alongside web information. With Work IQ off, Microsoft says Chat uses web information and model training data rather than Microsoft 365 organizational data. Personal Copilot instead uses personal content and the web. Check the Work IQ setting and account context if an answer seems to omit a work file or you’re seeing different content than expected; Microsoft outlines the distinction in its Copilot Chat overview.

If the problem continues
Report the issue through the Copilot app and include when it began, your device, operating system, and a screenshot of what happened. Microsoft’s Copilot content troubleshooting guide recommends these details to help investigate. If you use a work or school account and the problem is a persistent organizational access issue, contact your administrator; Microsoft explains support options for work or school account users.
