If a Mac trackpad gesture stops working, first check Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad and confirm that gesture is enabled. Then match your finger count and movement to the on-screen preview. If the problem is specifically scrolling, check Accessibility settings; if you use an external trackpad, check its power and connection.
Check the gesture’s setting
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings > Trackpad.
- Find the control for the gesture that is failing, such as a swipe, pinch, or scroll action. Confirm it is enabled and set to the gesture you intend to use.
- Use the preview in Trackpad settings to check the movement. Apple says gesture options can be customized or turned off, and the available options can vary by Mac or trackpad. Apple’s trackpad settings guide explains the controls.
Match the gesture and finger count
Follow the movement shown in Trackpad settings or in Apple’s Multi-Touch gesture guide. Finger counts are not identical across every macOS version: Apple notes that some gestures use three fingers in some versions and four in others. If a three-finger swipe is not working, check the current preview rather than relying on instructions written for a different macOS release.

If your Mac trackpad won’t scroll, check Accessibility
When scrolling is the only action that has stopped, inspect the trackpad scrolling control in Accessibility settings. Apple documents that scrolling can be turned off there, independently of the gesture controls you check in Trackpad settings. See Apple’s guidance on changing trackpad settings.
Check an external trackpad’s connection
Wireless trackpad
- Make sure the trackpad is powered on and close enough to the Mac.
- Check that Bluetooth is on and that the trackpad is paired and connected.
- For a Magic Trackpad, check Bluetooth settings for its charge and pairing status. Apple’s Magic Trackpad setup instructions describe connecting it to a Mac.
Wired trackpad
- Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends.
- If the Mac’s ports do not match the cable, verify that the adapter is suitable and connected securely.
Apple describes wired and Bluetooth options for connecting an external trackpad in its Mac accessory connection guide.

If gestures still fail, note the symptoms before seeking repair
Gesture failure alone does not establish that the trackpad has a hardware fault. Before contacting Apple or a repair provider, note the Mac model, macOS version, whether the trackpad is built in or external, which gestures fail, and whether pointer movement and clicking still work. Those details help distinguish a gesture-specific issue from a broader trackpad or connection problem.
