How to Fix Low FPS and Stuttering in Deadlock

To troubleshoot low FPS or stuttering in Deadlock, first check the Source2 Telemetry HUD during the hitch: it shows frame-rate and network information, which helps distinguish a local performance problem from network trouble. If frame rate is the issue, try Steam’s general software steps—starting with -autoconfig and then adjusting video settings—before investigating hardware. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed Deadlock-specific fixes. Deadlock’s Steam support listing currently shows that system requirements are not published, so there is no official minimum CPU or GPU baseline to use as a pass/fail test.

1. Check whether the hitch is FPS trouble or network lag

“Lag” can mean either poor rendering performance or a network problem. Those problems can feel similar in a match, but they require different next steps. Reproduce the hitch and inspect Deadlock’s Source2 Telemetry HUD while it is happening. The HUD can display frame-rate and network conditions, so note what changes at the same moment as the hitch rather than relying on an average FPS reading alone. Steam’s Source2 Telemetry HUD guide describes the display as a diagnostic aid, not an automatic repair.

Try to observe several hitches instead of drawing a conclusion from one moment. A single slow frame can have many explanations, while a repeatable pattern is more useful. Write down whether the hitch occurs during a particular type of scene, whether the frame-rate reading changes, and whether the network information changes at the same time. This simple record prevents you from lowering every graphics option when the evidence points to connectivity, or from blaming the connection when the computer is actually missing frames.

  • If frame rate changes when the hitch occurs, investigate rendering settings and local system performance.
  • If network information changes while frame rate does not, the symptoms point toward network impairment rather than low rendering performance.
  • If both change together, record both observations and avoid claiming that one side caused the other without more testing.
  • If neither reading appears to change, repeat the test in another match or scene and describe the symptom precisely when requesting help.

Why average FPS is not enough

Averages can hide short, disruptive hitches. A game may feel smooth for most of a match and still stutter when a brief frame-time problem occurs. The useful question is not only “What FPS do I usually get?” but also “What does the telemetry show at the exact instant the image or controls hitch?” Compare the reading immediately before, during, and after the event. Keep the conditions similar so your notes distinguish a persistent low frame rate from intermittent spikes.

2. Prepare a repeatable test

Make troubleshooting reversible and measurable. Before changing anything, record the current resolution, graphics choices, and whether the issue is constant or intermittent. Also note your CPU and GPU, because those details will be useful if you need Valve’s support path later. You do not need an official minimum-spec comparison: the current Deadlock support listing marks system requirements as not published.

  1. Choose a repeatable situation in which the hitch is easy to notice, such as a similar type of match or scene. The goal is to compare like with like, not to create a benchmark number that Valve has published.
  2. Observe the Source2 Telemetry HUD during the event and write down the frame-rate and network behavior.
  3. Change only one variable at a time. If you change resolution, several quality options, and launch settings together, you cannot tell which change affected the symptom.
  4. After each test, compare the same kind of gameplay conditions. A different scene can naturally produce a different workload, making an otherwise good change look ineffective.
  5. Revert a change that makes the image or performance worse before trying another. Keeping a known baseline makes later observations easier to interpret.

This process is deliberately conservative. Steam’s guidance is general troubleshooting advice, not a promise that a particular option will cure every Deadlock configuration. A test that produces no improvement is still useful because it narrows the list of plausible causes.

3. Try reversible software changes

Steam Support recommends trying -autoconfig as an initial general troubleshooting step for game performance. Steam also advises manually changing video options; lowering resolution or graphics levels may improve FPS. These are general Valve recommendations, not proof that a specific option is best for Deadlock or every PC. Steam’s software troubleshooting guide is the relevant general procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test -autoconfig first

  1. In Steam, open Deadlock’s properties and locate the launch-options field.
  2. Add -autoconfig as a launch option, then start the game.
  3. Repeat the same kind of gameplay test used for your baseline and watch the telemetry during a hitch.
  4. Record whether the symptom changed, stayed the same, or became worse. Do not treat the option as a guaranteed Deadlock-specific fix.
  5. If the test does not help, remove or revert the option before moving on, unless you have a reason to keep it for further controlled testing.

The value of this step is that it is easy to undo and gives you a clear comparison. Avoid combining it with a large batch of graphics changes on the first run. Otherwise, an apparent improvement cannot be attributed to any one action.

Adjust video options methodically

If the issue continues, change one video option at a time. Steam specifically points to reducing resolution or graphics levels as possible ways to increase FPS. Start with a modest, documented change, then repeat the same type of scene. Observe both the frame-rate behavior and the actual hitch; a higher average that does not remove the intermittent hitch is not the same result as a consistently smoother experience.

  • Test resolution as one variable, noting the original and new values.
  • Test the overall graphics level as a separate variable rather than changing every individual option simultaneously.
  • Keep a short log of each setting and the telemetry behavior during the test.
  • Restore an option if image quality or controls become unacceptable, then test a different reversible change.

There is no official Deadlock setting that Steam identifies as universally optimal. Your objective is to find out whether the symptom responds to a rendering workload change, not to copy an anecdotal configuration without checking your own evidence.

4. Investigate hardware only when symptoms support it

Steam’s general hardware guidance identifies overheating and low memory as possible sources of poor performance or recurring hitches. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guide does not establish that either condition is present in a particular Deadlock setup. Check temperature and memory use during play; treat abnormal temperatures or memory pressure as leads for further diagnosis, not as reasons to assume a component needs replacing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for overheating evidence

Monitor the system while reproducing the hitch, rather than checking temperatures only while the game is idle. If temperatures rise abnormally at the same time as repeated hitches, overheating becomes a reasonable hypothesis to investigate. If temperatures remain normal, do not present overheating as the explanation simply because it is a common possibility. The available guidance does not identify a particular cooler, case, fan, or temperature threshold for Deadlock.

Look for low-memory evidence

Likewise, check memory use during the event. If system memory is under pressure when short hitches recur, low memory is a lead worth investigating. If memory use does not correlate with the symptom, look back at the telemetry and software tests instead of buying a memory kit on speculation. Steam’s guidance discusses low memory as a general performance problem; it does not prove that Deadlock has a universal memory requirement or that adding a particular amount will deliver a known FPS gain.

Do not turn a possibility into a purchase

Hardware troubleshooting should answer a question before it creates a cost. The cited support material does not support recommending a specific CPU, GPU, cooler, memory kit, or other component for every player. First establish whether the monitored symptom is actually consistent with a hardware limit. If you later seek advice, include the evidence: the observed temperatures or memory pressure, the game settings, the resolution, whether the issue is persistent or intermittent, and what the telemetry showed. Without that information, an upgrade is an unverified experiment rather than a diagnosis.

5. Interpret persistent low FPS versus intermittent stutter

Different patterns call for different questions. A frame rate that stays low across comparable scenes suggests starting with reversible rendering and software changes, then checking hardware conditions if monitoring points there. Short, recurring hitches call for closer attention to what changes at the exact moment: network information, frame rate, temperature, or memory use. Neither pattern by itself identifies a failed component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you observe Reasonable next step What it does not establish
Frame rate drops at the same time as the hitch Test reversible video-setting changes; use monitoring to check for hardware pressure. It does not identify a particular component as the cause.
Network information changes but frame rate does not Investigate the network side of the problem and report the telemetry pattern. It does not indicate that lowering graphics settings will fix it.
Frame rate is consistently low Begin with settings and general software troubleshooting, then examine hardware conditions if monitoring points to them. It does not show whether the PC meets an official minimum; Deadlock’s support listing says requirements are not published.
Short, recurring hitches Check whether memory pressure or overheating coincides with them, while also checking network and frame-rate readings. Steam discusses these as general hardware possibilities, not as confirmed Deadlock-specific causes.
Both frame rate and network readings change Capture the timing and describe both observations when seeking help rather than choosing a cause prematurely. It does not prove that rendering or networking alone is responsible.
No clear telemetry change Repeat the observation under comparable conditions and document exactly what you see. It does not prove that the issue is imaginary or that a random tweak is appropriate.

6. Keep rendering problems separate from network problems

A graphics change can affect rendering workload, but it is not a general remedy for network impairment. If the HUD shows a network change while frame rate remains stable, focus your description on the network symptom. Conversely, if frame rate falls while network information does not change, lowering resolution or graphics levels is a more relevant software test. This separation prevents two common mistakes: spending money on hardware for a connection problem, or repeatedly changing graphics settings for a network problem.

Do not use the word “lag” as the complete diagnosis in a support request. Say whether the frame-rate reading changed, whether the network information changed, and whether the event was constant or intermittent. That wording gives the support team something testable instead of a label that can describe multiple conditions.

7. Use official support information carefully

Valve’s Deadlock support page is the official support path. It currently lists the game’s system requirements as not published, so it does not provide an official minimum hardware baseline for comparing a PC against. Do not invent a minimum CPU, GPU, memory amount, or expected FPS from that page. A computer can be powerful on paper and still have a specific configuration problem, while a lower-spec system cannot be declared unsupported using a requirement Valve has not published there.

When describing the problem, include your CPU and GPU, resolution, video settings, whether the issue is constant or intermittent, and what the telemetry HUD showed during a hitch. Add the results of the reversible tests: whether -autoconfig changed anything, which video option you changed, and whether the symptom returned after reverting. If you observed temperature or memory pressure, state that as an observation rather than a conclusion. This record lets support evaluate the pattern without implying an unsupported minimum-spec comparison.

A useful support report

  • Identify the symptom as low frame rate, intermittent stuttering, network trouble, or an unresolved combination.
  • State when it occurs and whether it is reproducible in similar scenes.
  • List the CPU, GPU, resolution, and current video settings.
  • Describe the frame-rate and network readings in the Source2 Telemetry HUD during the hitch.
  • Explain what happened after testing -autoconfig and individual video changes.
  • Report any temperature or memory observation that coincided with the event.
  • Say what you reverted and what baseline you used for comparison.

8. Be cautious with community tweaks

Players report different results from configuration changes and other tweaks, but individual community posts are anecdotes rather than verified fixes for all Deadlock players. A community suggestion may be a hypothesis worth testing, not a specification or a benchmark. Treat it as experimental: change one reversible item, compare the same conditions, and keep the telemetry record.

Do not present a single player’s FPS increase as a representative result, and do not assume that a setting that helped one computer will help another. The available support material contains no named-person quote or dated, attributable performance statistic that would justify promising a particular uplift. Claims such as “this always fixes stuttering” or “every player needs this upgrade” go beyond the evidence.

9. Common pitfalls that make troubleshooting harder

  • Confusing average FPS with a hitch: an average number may hide an intermittent event. Observe the HUD during the event itself.
  • Changing many settings at once: you lose the ability to identify which change mattered.
  • Testing different scenes: a changed workload can make an unrelated setting look responsible.
  • Assuming “lag” means one thing: frame-rate and network symptoms need different follow-up.
  • Assuming a hardware cause: overheating and low memory are possibilities to verify, not diagnoses.
  • Inventing a minimum specification: the official Deadlock listing currently says requirements are not published.
  • Buying parts first: no particular product or upgrade is established without evidence of a matching hardware problem.
  • Treating anecdotes as guarantees: community configurations have differing results and are not universal fixes.
  • Failing to revert: leave a known baseline so later comparisons remain meaningful.

10. A concise troubleshooting order

For most reports, follow this order:

  1. Reproduce the event and inspect the Source2 Telemetry HUD.
  2. Classify the observation as primarily frame-rate, primarily network, both, or unclear.
  3. Record the current resolution, video settings, hardware, and whether the symptom is constant or intermittent.
  4. Try -autoconfig as Steam’s initial general software step.
  5. Test resolution or graphics-level changes one at a time and compare similar scenes.
  6. Check temperature and memory use only as evidence-led hardware investigations.
  7. Revert changes that do not help or that make the experience worse.
  8. Send Valve support a concise report containing the telemetry pattern and test results.

This order minimizes guesswork and avoids turning a general troubleshooting suggestion into a promise. It also keeps the cost decision in the right place: investigate first, consider hardware action only if monitoring establishes a relevant condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the first thing to check when Deadlock stutters?

Reproduce the hitch and look at Deadlock’s Source2 Telemetry HUD. It displays frame-rate and network information, helping you determine whether the event looks like a rendering problem, network impairment, both, or an unclear combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Steam guarantee that -autoconfig will fix Deadlock FPS?

No. Steam recommends -autoconfig as an initial general performance-troubleshooting step. Test it as a reversible change and compare the same gameplay conditions; it is not a guaranteed Deadlock-specific cure.

Which graphics setting should I lower first?

Steam’s general guidance says that manually changing video options, including lowering resolution or graphics levels, may improve FPS. Test one option at a time and use your own telemetry and repeatable comparison rather than assuming one setting is universally best.

How can I tell network lag from low FPS?

Watch both readings during the hitch. A frame-rate change points toward rendering or local performance; a network change without a frame-rate change points toward network impairment. If both change, record both instead of assigning a single cause prematurely.

What are Deadlock’s official minimum PC requirements?

The current Deadlock Steam support listing shows that system requirements are not published. It therefore does not provide an official minimum CPU or GPU baseline, and you should not invent one for a pass/fail comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Could overheating cause recurring Deadlock hitches?

Steam’s general hardware guidance identifies overheating as a possible source of poor performance or repeated hitches. Check temperatures while reproducing the event. Treat a correlation as a lead for diagnosis, not proof that a particular component or cooler must be purchased.

Could low memory cause stuttering?

Steam also discusses low memory as a possible hardware-side performance problem. Monitor memory use during the hitch and report pressure if it coincides with the symptom. There is no supported universal Deadlock memory requirement or guaranteed upgrade amount in the cited guidance.

Should I buy a new GPU, CPU, cooler, or memory kit?

Not solely because Deadlock stutters. No particular product is established as a direct fix. First determine whether telemetry, temperature, or memory observations support a hardware diagnosis; otherwise, buying a component is speculation.

Are community Deadlock launch options and tweaks reliable?

Community reports can suggest hypotheses, but they are individual anecdotes with differing results. Test any reversible suggestion one change at a time, compare similar conditions, and do not present one player’s result as a universal fix or promised FPS gain.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I send to Valve support?

Use the official Deadlock support page and include your CPU, GPU, resolution, video settings, whether the issue is constant or intermittent, and what the Source2 Telemetry HUD showed during a hitch. Also report your -autoconfig and individual-setting test results, plus any temperature or memory observation that coincided with the event.

The Bottom Line

Start with evidence, not guesses: inspect Deadlock’s Source2 Telemetry HUD during the hitch, separate frame-rate behavior from network behavior, and record a repeatable baseline. Try Steam’s reversible -autoconfig step and individual resolution or graphics changes before investigating hardware. Check temperature and memory only when monitoring supports those possibilities, avoid inventing minimum requirements or buying parts on speculation, and give Valve support a precise account of your hardware, settings, symptom pattern, and telemetry.
