Find the specific foreground-and-background combinations that fail, then adjust the text, its background, or the area directly behind it. Under WCAG 2.2 Level AA, ordinary text needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1; qualifying large text needs at least 3:1. Check the colors as they appear on the page rather than judging them by eye.
Start with the text that actually fails
A palette is not accessible or inaccessible as a whole: contrast depends on the foreground and background used together. A vivid color may work well for a large heading on one surface and fail for small text on another. List each text-and-background pair in its real context, including body copy, headings, links, buttons, and any hover, focus, or overlay states that appear on the page. WCAG’s contrast check concerns combinations authors expect to appear adjacent in typical presentation.

Measure the rendered colors with a contrast analyzer. Visual judgment alone cannot establish that a pair meets the requirement. Compare the unrounded result with the applicable threshold: a measured 4.499:1 does not meet 4.5:1. The W3C explanation of WCAG Success Criterion 1.4.3 explains the thresholds and how to apply them.

Apply the right WCAG 2.2 threshold
For new or updated work, WCAG 2.2 is the current W3C-recommended reference. A specific policy may still require an earlier version. Under Level AA Success Criterion 1.4.3, use these minimum ratios:

Do not shrink text to retain a color combination: smaller text may be subject to the higher threshold. Do not round a failing result up to a pass. WCAG Level AAA sets higher enhanced-contrast thresholds—7:1 for ordinary text and 4.5:1 for large text—but these are distinct from the Level AA minimums. Choose the smallest visual change that fixes the pair
If a combination fails, change the foreground, the background, or both until the measured ratio reaches the threshold for that text. You do not have to replace every strong palette color. Often, changing only the text color or the surface behind a particular element preserves the rest of the design and its hierarchy. Recheck the new combination instead of assuming that a change that looks more readable is sufficient.

Text over a pattern or image
When letters cross changing colors or textures, check contrast against the background immediately behind them—not just against an average or dominant image color. Make a stable patch by shading the local background, adjust text luminance as the underlying background changes, or add a halo around the letters. These are example techniques, not mandatory designs: the result must make the text readable and satisfy the applicable criterion. W3C describes these approaches in its G145 technique for text over backgrounds.

Preserve the design without relying on color alone
Contrast fixes do not address every color-accessibility issue. If color communicates a status, category, or selection, add another cue such as a label, shape, or pattern so color is not the sole way to understand it. Meaningful icons and graphics have a separate non-text contrast criterion: WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.11 specifies at least 3:1 for the visual information needed to identify applicable user-interface components and graphical objects. Do not apply that non-text threshold in place of the text thresholds. Section508.gov offers practical guidance on accessible color use and testing contrast in non-web documents and images.

Retest the page and reuse combinations that work
After adjusting a pair, check all the places it appears and each relevant state. Include headings, body text, text within images, and online or converted output where applicable. A combination that works in one section may fail on another surface or over a different image. Put successful combinations into shared theme tokens or templates so the same failure is less likely to recur.
WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 has scoped exceptions, including inactive user-interface components, pure decoration, text not visible to anyone, some text in images with significant other visual content, and text that is part of a logo or brand name. These exceptions do not extend to ordinary visible page copy merely because it is part of a distinctive design.
