Effective lecture notes are not a transcript: they capture the instructor’s main ideas and explanations in a form you can later use to test your memory. Preview the topic before class, listen for relationships and examples, then turn your notes into questions and revisit them over time.
Before the lecture, preview the topic and prepare questions
Check the syllabus, slides, assigned reading, or your notes from the previous lecture. A brief preview can make unfamiliar terms and the lecture’s main concepts easier to recognize. Memorial University suggests previewing material the night before as one option, not a fixed requirement for every course.
Write down a few likely key concepts and questions you want answered. Bring forward points you found confusing in the reading or earlier class; those questions give you something specific to listen for.
During class, capture ideas rather than every sentence
Listen for the central point, then record the supporting explanations that help you understand or apply it. Useful material often includes definitions, worked examples, comparisons, cause-and-effect links, and points the instructor emphasizes. Cornell’s Learning Strategies Center recommends recording lecture content in “telegraphic sentences”—concise phrases rather than full verbatim passages.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use your own words and consistent abbreviations. Memorial University advises against transcribing the instructor word for word. Mark unclear points with a question, and note connections to readings or other classes. If information comes from a slide, activity, or another source, identify that source so you can distinguish it later.
Choose paper, a tablet, or a computer according to what helps you stay engaged and keep your notes usable; no one medium is best for every student. Cornell’s guidance similarly frames useful notes as notes that support active learning and fit the student’s needs.

Choose a format that fits the material
| Format | Useful when | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Cornell notes | You want lecture notes paired with recall cues or exam questions. | Reserve a note area for lecture points and a cue area for questions or key terms. Add a short summary, then use the cues to recite the answers. Memorial University describes a page organized into title, questions, notes, and summary sections; Cornell details its system at The Cornell Note-taking System. |
| Outline | The lecture has a clear hierarchy, or you need one guide combining lectures with readings, labs, or other sources. | Prepare headings before class and place details under the relevant topic or subtopic. Memorial University explains this approach in Note-taking essentials. |
| Mind map | You need to see relationships among concepts or synthesize material across modules. | Put the central topic in the middle and connect related ideas. During review, try recreating the map from memory. See Memorial University’s format guidance. |
There is no single right note-taking style. Match the format to the subject, the way you work, and what the exam asks you to do.
Soon after class, make the notes usable
While the lecture is still fresh, revisit your notes. Fill in details you remember, organize sections with headings, and connect the lecture to relevant readings or earlier material. If you missed a point, comparing notes with a classmate can help you identify a gap; mark anything uncertain rather than treating a guess as fact.

Add questions that could appear on an exam, along with answers in your own words. For Cornell notes, place questions or cue words in the cue column. Reflect on why the material matters, which principles it illustrates, how it might be applied, and how it connects to other ideas.
Review by retrieving, then checking
Do not rely only on rereading. Cover the main notes or use a blank page, look at a cue or question, and try to explain or reconstruct the answer from memory before checking. Cornell’s study-strategy guidance describes retrieval practice as actively recalling information and putting it on paper—for example, in writing, a flow chart, diagram, or graph. After the attempt, check your notes, correct gaps, and try again in a later session. Cornell also provides guidance on effective study strategies.

Space review across time rather than leaving all of it until just before the exam. Cornell recommends studying at intervals rather than cramming and suggests reviewing earlier notes for at least ten minutes every week. That weekly interval is Cornell’s recommendation, not a universally established optimal schedule; adjust review sessions to the exam date, course demands, and how well you can retrieve the material. Associated Press reporting published September 30, 2026, quotes learning researchers discussing retrieval and spacing, but it is secondary reporting rather than a study establishing one ideal schedule: Why old school study habits might not boost your grades long-term.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For calculation-heavy courses, add problem practice
Notes can help you remember formulas and understand worked examples, but they do not replace using those formulas. Memorial University recommends practicing problems and applying formulas alongside reviewing notes and examples. During review, attempt problems without looking at the worked solution first, then use the notes to find and correct the step where your reasoning went wrong.
