How to Fix Loud, Distorted, or Unbalanced Audio in MLB The Show 26

If MLB The Show 26 sounds too loud, crackles, puts commentary or crowd noise ahead of game chat, or is louder on one side, isolate the output path before changing several controls at once. Compare the same inning through your TV or soundbar and through a headset, then adjust the active device in your platform’s audio settings. On PS5, use Settings > Sound > Audio Output; on Windows, check the system and per-app mixer, disable audio enhancements, test another default format, and update or reinstall the driver if distortion remains. These steps address the console, computer, headset, and HDMI paths that can produce the symptom; there is no published MLB The Show 26-specific audio-bug notice or universal in-game slider fix.

What the symptom usually tells you

Audio that is merely too loud is usually a level or routing problem. Crackling, harsh clipping, or robotic sound points more often to an incompatible format, an enhancement effect, a driver, a wireless or USB link, or failing hardware. A left/right difference can come from balance controls, a damaged cable, a loose connector, a headset fit issue, or an AV receiver using the wrong speaker layout. Game audio that overwhelms party chat is commonly a game/chat mix or output-device selection problem.

MLB The Show 26 launched on March 17, 2026, with early access beginning March 13, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The official PlayStation support information lists English audio and subtitles. The platform support pages document audio controls, but they do not identify a confirmed MLB The Show 26 audio defect, a universal patch workaround, or a complete map of the game’s internal audio sliders. Treat the procedure below as output-path troubleshooting rather than proof of a game-side bug.

Run this isolation test first

Make one change at a time and relaunch the game after each significant change. Use the same menu or inning for every comparison so that crowd, commentary, and bat-contact sounds are comparable.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Note the exact symptom. Record whether the problem is excessive loudness, distortion or crackling, low volume, a left/right imbalance, or game/chat imbalance. Also note whether it affects all sounds or only MLB The Show 26.
  2. Test the TV or monitor path. Quit and relaunch the game, then listen through the television or monitor speakers. If that path is clean, the game and console are probably producing a usable signal and the headset, controller jack, receiver, or wireless link deserves attention.
  3. Test a headset. Use a wired headset, a USB headset, or another known-good set. If only one headset is affected, inspect its cable, plug, USB receiver, fit, and balance controls.
  4. Remove intermediate equipment. Temporarily bypass a soundbar or AV receiver and connect the console directly to the display, or use the display’s speakers. A clean direct connection isolates HDMI handshaking, receiver format, and speaker-layout settings.
  5. Check chat separately. Join a party or voice channel and compare a friend’s voice with commentary and crowd sound. If only the relative mix is wrong, adjust game/chat balance rather than raising the master volume.
  6. Change one setting, then retest. Keep a note of the original value. This prevents several changes from hiding the setting that actually solved the problem.

If both the TV path and multiple headsets reproduce the same clipping in the same scene, the issue may be upstream of the individual device. Capture a short recording if your platform allows it and check for an official game or platform update; do not assume that recording alone proves a game defect.

PS5: verify every audio-output control

On PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. The labels below are the controls PlayStation documents for selecting and formatting the active output.

1. Output Device

Set Output Device to the hardware you are actually hearing. A headset can be connected while PS5 continues sending sound to HDMI, or the console can select a different USB device with a similar name. After selecting the device, play the same MLB The Show 26 scene again rather than judging the setting from the menu alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. HDMI Device Type

For television, soundbar, or receiver listening, check HDMI Device Type. Choose the type that matches the connected equipment. An incorrect type can produce an unsuitable channel layout or unexpected level behavior, especially when a receiver is treated as ordinary TV speakers.

3. Number of Channels and speaker positions

When an AV amplifier is selected, PS5 exposes Number of Channels and Adjust Speaker Positions. Set the channel count to match the speakers you actually use. Then use the speaker-position adjustment so the console’s virtual positioning corresponds to the physical left, center, right, surround, and subwoofer locations. A mismatch can make one side appear louder or make commentary anchored to the center channel seem unusually quiet.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

4. Audio Format (Priority)

Test the available Audio Format (Priority) choices one at a time. Leave the format that your TV, soundbar, or receiver handles cleanly. If a format produces crackle, dropouts, or harsh clipping while another is clean, keep the clean option and check the receiver’s input format separately. This is a compatibility test, not a guarantee that one format is universally better.

5. Output to Headphones and headphone volume

With a controller, USB, or wireless headset connected, check Output to Headphones and the headphone-volume control. Confirm that the setting is not sending only chat when you expect all audio, or sending all audio when you intended to keep game sound on HDMI. Set a moderate level first; raising both the console and headset amplifier can create clipping even when neither control is at its maximum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Recheck automatic switching

Disconnect and reconnect the headset, then return to Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Confirm that the selected output did not silently revert to TV or HDMI. Repeat this check after waking the console from rest mode if the problem appears only after resuming a session.

Using a USB headset as a controlled comparison

A USB headset is useful because it bypasses the television speakers, HDMI receiver, and often the controller’s analog jack. Sony’s documented route for the INZONE H5 is Settings > Sound > Audio Output > USB Headset (INZONE H5). The model is an example of a USB output path; the same diagnostic idea applies to other USB headsets that PS5 recognizes.

  1. Connect the headset or its USB receiver directly to the PS5.
  2. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  3. Select the named USB headset as Output Device.
  4. Play the same menu or inning used in the TV test.
  5. Check master volume and the headset’s own volume control.
  6. Check the game/chat balance control while a party member is speaking.

If the USB headset is clean but the controller-connected headset crackles, inspect the controller jack, plug, and cable. If both headsets are clean but HDMI is distorted, focus on the TV, soundbar, receiver, HDMI cable, and HDMI format. If every path distorts at the same moment, keep the platform and game software in the investigation rather than replacing a single headset immediately.

TV, soundbar, and AV receiver fixes

Bypass the chain

Connect the PS5 directly to the display and use the display speakers for one test. If the sound becomes normal, reconnect the soundbar or receiver and test each HDMI input. This identifies whether the issue follows the console, the cable, a particular input, or the intermediate audio device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check processing and speaker layout

Disable optional sound modes such as virtual surround, night compression, dialogue enhancement, or loudness normalization temporarily. These modes can make crowd and bat-contact peaks seem excessively loud or can exaggerate channel differences. Restore them one at a time after the base signal is clean.

For an AV receiver, verify that the input is assigned to the correct HDMI source and that the speaker layout matches the speakers connected. A receiver expecting a center speaker that is absent can make commentary appear missing or unbalanced; a swapped left/right speaker wire produces a persistent side reversal.

Inspect cables and connectors

  • Reseat the HDMI cable at the console, display, soundbar, and receiver.
  • Try a different HDMI input and a known-good cable.
  • For analog headsets, inspect the plug for partial insertion, bent contacts, or debris.
  • For wireless headsets, move the receiver away from USB 3 hubs and other radio transmitters, then recharge or replace the headset battery.

Windows: remove software causes of distortion and low volume

If you play through Windows, use the system mixer and the selected output-device properties before changing game settings.

1. Check system and per-app volume

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
  2. Raise System volume and the volume for the affected MLB The Show 26 app.
  3. Make sure the app is not muted and is assigned to the intended output device.
  4. Play the same scene again before changing another control.

Per-app volume can be lower than the master level, and an application can be routed to a monitor, headset, or virtual device different from the one selected as the Windows default.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

2. Turn audio enhancements off

Open the selected output device in Windows Sound settings and turn Audio enhancements off. Microsoft notes that enhancements can reduce or distort output volume. Re-test before enabling any vendor or headset effects.

3. Try another default format

In the device’s Advanced settings, try another Default format. An unsupported or incorrect format can sound distorted, crackly, or unusually quiet. Change only the format, play the test scene, and keep the option that is stable with your hardware.

4. Update or reinstall the audio driver

If distortion remains across applications, update the audio driver from the computer or sound-device manufacturer. If the driver is corrupted, uninstall and reinstall it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then restart Windows. Microsoft also identifies stopped audio services as a possible cause; if sound fails system-wide after a change, restart Windows and verify that the Windows audio services are running before returning to the game.

5. Separate the game from the PC hardware

Test another application through the same output. If music, video, and system sounds also crackle, MLB The Show 26 is unlikely to be the sole cause. If only the game is affected, verify its Windows output assignment and volume-mixer entry, then test a different headset or speakers.

Use the same isolation method: compare the TV or soundbar with a headset, confirm the console’s currently selected output, check headset volume and game/chat balance, and bypass the receiver for one test. On Xbox, inspect the console’s audio output and headset-chat settings; on Switch, check the console’s TV-output and headphone path and test handheld mode if available. Menu names and available formats can vary by system software and connected accessory. If one output is clean and another is not, troubleshoot the affected hardware or connection before changing in-game levels.

Fixes by symptom

Symptom Most useful first checks What the result suggests
Everything is too loud Lower the active output and headset volume; verify the selected output device; disable loudness or enhancement processing. If only one device is loud, its amplifier or processing is involved. If every output is loud, check console or Windows master and per-app levels.
Crackling, clipping, or harsh distortion Try another output; test another PS5 Audio Format (Priority) or Windows Default format; disable enhancements; reseat or replace cables; update the Windows driver. A clean alternate path points to the original device, format, driver, or connection.
One side is louder Check headset balance, connector seating, left/right speaker wiring, PS5 channel count and speaker positions, and receiver layout. If the imbalance follows the headset, cable, or speaker, hardware is more likely than the game.
Commentary or crowd overwhelms party chat Check game/chat balance, master volume, and whether PS5 is sending all audio to the selected headset. Confirm the Windows app and system levels if on PC. A corrected relative mix without changing the master level indicates a routing or balance setting.
Headset sounds worse than TV Test a USB headset, verify PS5 Output to Headphones, try another controller or cable, and compare with a second headset. If USB is clean, concentrate on the controller jack or analog headset; if both headsets are poor, inspect console and format settings.
Problem starts after rest mode or reconnecting equipment Return to the platform’s Audio Output page and reselect the intended device; power-cycle the display, receiver, and headset. The console may have changed its active route or renegotiated HDMI audio.

Correcting game and chat balance without causing clipping

Use the smallest control that addresses the problem. If voices are too quiet relative to commentary, raise chat or lower game audio rather than raising the entire master output. If all sound is distorted, lowering chat will not repair it; return to output format, enhancements, driver, and hardware checks.

  1. Have a party member speak continuously for a few seconds.
  2. Keep the console or Windows master volume at a moderate level.
  3. Adjust the game/chat balance until speech and game audio are intelligible.
  4. Ask the party member to speak again after each single change.
  5. Save the working balance, then restore any optional surround or enhancement mode one at a time.

Sony’s headset guidance specifically identifies game/chat balance, computer master volume, and selecting the correct USB headset output as troubleshooting points. Those controls are more appropriate for a relative-mix problem than repeatedly turning up the headset amplifier.

When hardware is the likely cause

Suspect hardware when the same MLB The Show 26 scene is clean through another output, when the imbalance follows one headset or speaker, or when moving a cable changes the symptom. Replace or repair the affected cable, controller, headset, USB receiver, soundbar, or speaker only after the alternate-output test identifies it as the common factor.

  • Headset only: test another headset on the same port and test the original headset on another device.
  • Controller jack only: use a USB headset temporarily and inspect the jack for looseness or debris.
  • Soundbar or receiver only: bypass it, try another HDMI input, and check its input assignment and speaker layout.
  • One speaker only: swap left and right connections. If the quiet side moves, the source channel or receiver is implicated; if it stays with the speaker, the speaker or wire is implicated.
  • Wireless only: recharge, re-pair, move the receiver, and test the wired or USB mode if the headset supports it.

A safe order for changes

Use reversible settings first and hardware changes last:

  1. Select the correct output device.
  2. Set moderate master, system, and per-app volume.
  3. Correct game/chat balance.
  4. Disable enhancements and optional receiver processing.
  5. Test PS5 channel count, speaker positions, and Audio Format (Priority), or the Windows Default format.
  6. Bypass the receiver and test a USB or known-good headset.
  7. Update or reinstall a Windows audio driver when system-wide problems persist.
  8. Replace the cable or hardware identified by the comparison tests.

Keep the original setting in a note before each change. If a setting fixes the sound, stop there instead of stacking additional processing modes that can reintroduce clipping or imbalance.

What is not established about an MLB The Show 26 audio bug

There is no published notice in the available official support information confirming a game-wide loudness, distortion, or channel-imbalance defect, and no detailed universal map of MLB The Show 26 audio sliders. A symptom that appears on every output and survives platform resets may warrant checking the game’s current patch notes or contacting platform and game support, but a single affected headset, receiver, or Windows device should be treated as an output-path issue first.
