When a Logitech keyboard types normally but its shortcuts, media controls or custom keys do nothing, start with the keyboard’s mode and connection before replacing hardware. Press Fn+Esc to test the F-row mode, then check the correct Logi Options+ or G HUB profile, reconnect the keyboard directly, update Logitech software and drivers, and test it on another computer. The sequence below identifies whether the fault is a setting, an application, the wireless link or the keyboard itself.
Identify exactly which keys fail
“Hotkeys” can mean several different functions. A keyboard may type letters correctly while only one of these groups fails:

| What you observe | Most useful first check | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| F1–F12 and media keys perform the wrong action | Press Fn+Esc once, then test again | The top row may be in media/hotkey mode instead of standard F-key mode, or vice versa. |
| Only custom shortcuts or macros fail | Open Logi Options+ or G HUB and verify the active profile and assignment | The keyboard may be working, but the command is attached to another profile or device. |
| Every key is intermittent or unresponsive | Reconnect power, receiver or Bluetooth, then test a second computer | This separates a keyboard/receiver fault from a USB, Bluetooth or Windows problem. |
| Keys fail in one application only | Try the same key in a text editor or another program | An application shortcut conflict or profile rule is more likely than a failed switch. |
| Keys stopped after moving the keyboard | Check battery/charge and the receiver’s USB connection | Wireless power or signal placement may be the cause. |
Write down the exact keys, the expected action and what happens instead. That prevents a profile issue from being mistaken for a hardware failure.
Toggle the F-row mode with Fn+Esc
On supported Logitech keyboards, Fn+Esc switches the top row between its media or shortcut functions and ordinary F1–F12 behavior. If pressing F5 changes screen brightness instead of refreshing a page, or a media key sends an F-key code, press both keys together once and retest. Some models show an on-screen indicator or change the behavior immediately; others provide no visible confirmation.
#1 Best Overall
- TECHNICAL REQUIREMENT: This is not a standard plug-and-play receiver. It strictly requires -downloading the official Logitech Unifying Software to sync and pair with your compatible keyboard or mouse
When Fn+Esc does not change anything
- Confirm that you are holding the keyboard’s own Fn key, not an application modifier.
- Try the combination from a simple text editor and from the program where the shortcut failed.
- Check the model’s manual or product support page: Fn+Esc is available on supported models, not every Logitech layout.
- If the keyboard has a physical Fn-lock key or indicator, use that control and then test F1–F12 again.
This key combination changes the keyboard’s top-row mode. It does not repair a custom macro, a missing driver or a disconnected receiver.
Restart and reconnect before changing software
- Save your work and restart Windows or macOS. A restart reloads the keyboard service, Bluetooth stack and application hooks.
- For a wired keyboard, unplug the cable, wait a few seconds and reconnect it directly to the computer.
- For a wireless keyboard, switch it off, wait ten seconds, switch it on and verify its channel or device selector.
- Press the affected key in a text editor. If it now works, the original failure was likely a temporary connection or application state.
Do not use a USB hub, dock, KVM switch or extender while diagnosing a receiver. Connect the receiver directly to the computer and try a different USB port. Logitech specifically recommends trying another port; if behavior changes, the computer’s USB chipset driver or port may need attention.
Check power, receiver placement and pairing
Battery and charging
Replace the batteries or fully charge the keyboard, even if ordinary typing still works. Low power can make a wireless keyboard appear connected while dropping special-key events first. If the keyboard has a battery indicator in Logitech software, compare it with the physical power light and test again after charging.
Direct receiver connection
Keep the receiver in a direct USB port with a clear path to the keyboard. Move it away from USB 3 devices, metal enclosures and crowded hubs while testing. Try every available port, including a port on the opposite side of a laptop. If one port works and another does not, leave the receiver in the working port and investigate the affected port’s driver later.
Re-pair a compatible Unifying device
A keyboard that uses Logitech Unifying technology can be paired again with a compatible Unifying receiver through Logitech’s pairing software. Follow the on-screen instructions, turn the keyboard off and on when asked, and press a key to confirm the link. This procedure does not apply to Logi Bolt receivers, ordinary Bluetooth connections or wired keyboards.

Bluetooth reconnection
- Open the computer’s Bluetooth settings and remove the keyboard entry.
- Turn the keyboard off and on, select its pairing channel, and hold the pairing button until the indicator flashes.
- Add it again from the operating system’s Bluetooth device list.
- Test a standard key and the previously failing hotkey before opening Logitech software.
If Bluetooth pairing fails on the same computer but a receiver works, focus on the host Bluetooth stack, power management or interference rather than the key assignment.
Verify the correct PC or Mac layout
Logitech keyboards that support both Windows and Mac can change modifier behavior through a physical switch, key combination or software setting. A layout mismatch can make shortcuts appear dead because Command, Control, Alt/Option and Windows keys are being interpreted differently.

- In Windows, open Settings > Time & language > Language & region and confirm the installed keyboard layout.
- In macOS, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts and check the modifier-key mapping.
- Retest a simple shortcut such as copy or paste in a text editor before testing application-specific commands.
If only symbols or modifier combinations are wrong while letters type normally, layout and modifier mapping are more likely than a failed keyboard.
Update Logitech software, drivers and firmware through supported paths
Choose the right Logitech application
Use Logi Options+ for supported productivity keyboards and G HUB for supported programmable gaming keyboards. Install the current version offered for your operating system, restart when prompted, and verify that the keyboard appears in the application.
Windows can also reload a basic keyboard driver through Device Manager. Right-click Start, choose Device Manager, expand Keyboards and Human Interface Devices, right-click the relevant entry and choose Update driver. If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed, continue with Logitech’s software and the connection checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same entry.

Firmware-update limitation
Logitech states: “The Firmware Update Tool is no longer supported or maintained by Logitech.” Do not rely on that discontinued standalone utility. For supported devices, use the firmware update offered inside Logi Options+ or the current Logitech software for that product. Keep the keyboard connected to stable power during an update and do not unplug a receiver until the process finishes.

Repair custom assignments and profiles
A programmable key can work perfectly while its intended command appears broken because the assignment is stored in another profile, application context or device slot.
Logi Options+
- Open Logi Options+ and select the keyboard shown on the home screen.
- Open the key-customization or assignments panel.
- Select the intended key and confirm that the action is the command you expect, not an old application shortcut.
- Check whether an application-specific configuration is active. Temporarily switch to the default or global profile and test.
- Save the change, close and reopen the target application, and test again.
G HUB
- Open G HUB and select the keyboard.
- Open Assignments.
- Choose Keys or the relevant action category.
- Drag or assign the desired command to the physical key.
- Check the active profile at the top of the window. Switch to the profile used by the game or application, or temporarily set the assignment in the desktop profile for testing.
G HUB’s documented workflow depends on the device being detected. If the Assignments panel is missing, confirm that the exact keyboard model is supported and that G HUB has finished updating its device list.
Distinguish a bad assignment from a bad key
Assign a simple, harmless command such as opening a text editor, then press the key. If the temporary assignment works, the physical switch and software link are responding; recreate the original macro or shortcut. If no assignment works but ordinary typing does, continue with profile, permission and connection checks.
Test for an application-specific conflict
Close the program where the shortcut fails and open a plain text editor. Test the same physical key and the same modifier combination. Logitech advises checking whether a key responds incorrectly only in a particular program.

- If it works in the editor, inspect the application’s shortcut settings, game mode, overlay and profile selection.
- Disable competing macro, remapping or accessibility utilities one at a time and retest.
- Run the target application after G HUB or Logi Options+ is open if the software uses per-application profiles.
- Check whether the application is running with elevated permissions while the keyboard software is not; permission differences can prevent a macro from reaching it.
Do not conclude that the keyboard is defective until the key fails in more than one application.
Special case: Streamlabs Desktop and G HUB
For a Logitech gaming keyboard used with Streamlabs Desktop, a failed stream, recording, scene, source or mixer shortcut may be an integration or profile issue rather than a Windows-wide hotkey failure. StreamNeo’s guide, published 4 October 2026, describes assigning these actions through G HUB on supported devices, including some F-key workflows when the keyboard exposes an Fn option.
- Install and open Streamlabs Desktop.
- Open G HUB, select the keyboard and enter Assignments.
- Choose the Streamlabs-related action category if it is offered, then select the stream, recording, scene, source or mixer command.
- Assign it to the desired key and confirm that the Streamlabs profile is active.
- Keep Streamlabs Desktop open if G HUB requests it, then test with a noncritical scene or recording.
Support varies by keyboard model and software version. If the exact device does not expose the required Assignments panel, the workflow is unavailable for that combination; use Streamlabs’ own shortcut settings instead.

Dust, crumbs or a partially depressed keycap can stop a shortcut from registering even though other keys work. Shut down or disconnect the keyboard, hold it at an angle and use short bursts of compressed air around the affected key. Do not spray liquid into the switch or force a keycap off unless the model’s service instructions allow removal.

Use a second computer to isolate the fault
- Connect the keyboard to a second computer using the same connection method, preferably a direct USB port or a fresh Bluetooth pairing.
- Test ordinary typing, Fn+Esc, media keys and one custom assignment.
- If the same hotkeys fail on both computers, suspect the keyboard, receiver, pairing state or power.
- If the keyboard works on the second computer, concentrate on the original computer’s USB port, Bluetooth stack, drivers, Logitech profile or application environment.
Logitech’s receiver guidance notes that when the product remains unrecognized after its checks, “the fault is most likely related to the USB receiver rather than the keyboard or mouse.” A second-computer test makes that conclusion more reliable than guessing from one Windows session.
Decide whether a replacement receiver is appropriate
The generic product description Logitech Unifying USB Receiver is relevant only when the keyboard uses Logitech Unifying technology and the existing receiver is missing, unrecognized or impossible to pair. It is not a universal replacement for Logi Bolt receivers, Bluetooth-only models or wired keyboards.
| Connection type | What you need | Common recovery step |
|---|---|---|
| Unifying | A compatible Unifying receiver and pairing software | Re-pair the keyboard, then test another direct USB port. |
| Logi Bolt | The original or compatible Bolt receiver and its pairing process | Use the current Logitech software for Bolt devices; do not substitute a Unifying receiver. |
| Bluetooth | A working Bluetooth adapter and an available pairing channel | Remove the old entry and pair again in operating-system settings. |
| Wired USB | A sound cable and direct USB port | Try another cable or port, then inspect Device Manager. |
