Driver Easy 5.5.3 was the August 2017 release that redesigned the free edition’s single-driver update workflow. It added a step-by-step instruction panel to the free-version sidebar, updated some Danish and German translations, changed wording in the System Restore window, and fixed bugs. The release did not make Driver Easy permanently free: the current licensing information says versions 5.8.x and earlier had a Free edition, while version 6.0.0 and later no longer do.
What Driver Easy 5.5.3 changed
Driver Easy 5.5.3 focused primarily on usability rather than a new scanning engine or a published performance improvement. The central change was a redesign of the free version’s single-driver update process. The free-version sidebar gained instructions for downloading and updating one driver at a time, so the user could see the current stage and the next available action.

In her August 16, 2017 release announcement, author Sophie Luo described the update as bringing “big changes to the user interface of free version of Driver Easy” along with minor translation modifications and bug fixes. She said the new sidebar instructions were intended to show users “exactly what you’re doing,” where they were in the process, and what they could do next. That is a statement of the vendor’s design goal, not an independent measurement of faster updates or higher user satisfaction.

| Record | Date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Version-history entry | August 15, 2017 | Build 5.5.3.15599 is listed with this release date. |
| Release announcement | August 16, 2017 | Sophie Luo’s blog announcement was published one day after the date in the version history. |
Therefore, the most precise wording is that build 5.5.3.15599 is recorded as released on August 15, 2017, with the public announcement dated August 16, 2017. The one-day difference is a publication-versus-build-record distinction, not evidence of two separate 5.5.3 releases.
How the free-version redesign worked
Before 5.5.3: the problem the redesign addressed
The release notes identify the single-driver update process as the part of the free edition that needed clarification. A user working with one driver had to understand what stage the utility had reached and what action was available next. The 5.5.3 announcement does not publish a measured error rate or completion-time comparison for the older interface, so it is not possible to quantify how confusing the earlier flow was.
What was added to the sidebar
The free-version sidebar was expanded with instructions for single-driver downloading and updating. Those instructions were meant to provide process context rather than silently move the user through an opaque sequence. In practical terms, the panel was designed to answer three questions while a user handled one device:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- What is happening now? The instruction text identifies the current part of the download or update flow.
- Where am I? The sidebar gives the user a visible sense of progress through the single-driver task.
- What can I do next? The displayed guidance points to the next action instead of leaving the user to infer it.
The wording above describes the purpose documented by the vendor. It should not be read as a promise that every driver update would succeed, install faster, or require fewer restarts.

- Scan and update drivers as and when required - You can now easily download and install a variety of drivers for Windows in just a few clicks.
- Install latest drivers to enhance PC’s performance by finding just the right drivers for your computer’s hardware components.
- Exclude incompatible and unwanted drivers from the scan list so as to stop them from getting updated.
- Large driver database - Advanced Driver Updater has a large database of thousands of drivers which makes it simpler to install and update drivers.
- Important: BACKUP CD IS NOT INCLUDED
What a user would do in the redesigned flow
The release description supports a general workflow, although it does not provide a surviving screen-by-screen manual with exact button labels. A user of the free edition would typically use the interface in this order:
- Select a single driver task. The redesign concerns handling one driver, rather than a paid-style bulk update operation.
- Read the sidebar instruction for the current stage. The panel explains what Driver Easy is doing and identifies the next available step.
- Download the selected driver when instructed. The added guidance covers the download part of the single-driver process.
- Continue to the update step. After the download stage, the sidebar explains what to do to apply the selected driver.
- Check the result in the application. If Windows requests a restart or another confirmation, follow the operating system’s prompt and verify the device afterward.
Because 5.5.3 is a 2017 build, current Windows releases may display different controls or compatibility messages. The documented change is the presence and purpose of the guidance, not a guarantee that its old interface remains identical on every later Windows installation.
Other changes in 5.5.3
Translation updates
The release included updates to certain Danish and German translations. The available notes do not enumerate every revised string, so it would be inaccurate to describe this as a complete rewrite of either language or to claim that all localization issues were resolved.
System Restore wording
Wording in the System Restore window was changed. The notes do not say that Windows System Restore itself was redesigned, nor do they describe a new restore capability. Treat this as a text or interface-clarity adjustment within Driver Easy’s window.

- Make driver problems a thing of the past
Bug fixes
Bug fixes were included, but the public release summary does not provide a complete defect list, severity ranking, or before-and-after failure rate. The safe conclusion is simply that 5.5.3 contained unspecified fixes in addition to the interface and translation work.
How 5.5.3 compares with nearby releases
The official version history places 5.5.2 immediately before 5.5.3 and 5.5.4 immediately after it. Of those three entries, 5.5.3 is the one specifically identified with the new free-version sidebar guidance.
| Comparison point | 5.5.2 | 5.5.3.15599 | 5.5.4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Position in the sequence | Immediately before 5.5.3 | Release date listed as August 15, 2017 | Immediately after 5.5.3 |
| Free-version workflow guidance | Not stated in the cited version history | Sidebar instructions added for single-driver download and update | Not stated in the cited version history |
| Single-driver handling | Not stated | Process redesigned | Not stated |
| Danish and German localization | Not stated | Certain translations updated | Not stated |
| System Restore wording | Not stated | Wording changed | Not stated |
| Bug-fix scope | Not stated | Bug fixes included, details not published in the summary | Not stated |
This table separates what is documented about 5.5.3 from what is not published for the adjacent builds. It avoids implying that 5.5.2 lacked all guidance or that 5.5.4 contained no similar work; the available release-history entry simply does not establish those details.

Yes, 5.5.3 belonged to the period when Driver Easy offered a Free edition. That historical fact does not describe the product’s current licensing.

| Version range | Free-edition status in the current licensing description | What to understand |
|---|---|---|
| 5.8.x and earlier | Free applies | 5.5.3 falls within this earlier Free-version era. |
| 6.0.0 and later | No longer a free version | The current product page says the Free edition ended with the 6.0.0 generation. |
| Current Pro offer | Seven-day Pro trial | The current page describes a 7-day trial rather than a continuing free edition. |
“Free” therefore needs a date and version qualifier. Saying simply that Driver Easy is free would conflate the 2017 5.5.3 release with the post-6.0.0 licensing model. Conversely, saying that 5.5.3 was paid would be historically wrong.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the change did not establish
Several conclusions cannot be drawn from the 5.5.3 announcement or version-history entry:
- There is no published benchmark showing that 5.5.3 scanned, downloaded, or installed drivers faster.
- There is no independent test establishing a particular success rate, reliability score, or reduction in crashes.
- There is no user-count or satisfaction survey tied specifically to this build.
- The notes do not claim that every device would receive a newer driver or that an update would eliminate a hardware problem.
- The translation and System Restore edits should not be interpreted as a new Windows restore engine or complete language overhaul.
These limits matter because the release was primarily an interface update. Its strongest supported benefit is clearer guidance during a free single-driver task, not a measurable change in driver quality or computer performance.

If you are auditing an old installation or reading archived documentation, look for the full build number rather than relying only on the shortened product name. The version-history record identifies 5.5.3 as 5.5.3.15599. Confirm the date context as well: the history lists August 15, 2017, while the announcement is dated August 16, 2017.
Best Value
Do not assume that an installer labeled 5.5.3 has the same behavior as a current release. The free-version sidebar change belongs to the 5.5.3 interface, and later licensing and interface generations changed after the 5.8.x era.
Why the release mattered to free users
Free editions often expose only one item at a time, so the user has to understand each transition without the broader automation available in a paid tier. By placing instructions in the sidebar, 5.5.3 made the single-driver task more legible: the user could connect an action—download or update—with the stage shown in the application. That is a meaningful usability improvement even though it does not, by itself, alter the underlying driver supplied by the manufacturer.
The distinction between interface guidance and driver technology is important. A clearer panel can reduce uncertainty about what to click next, but it cannot make an incompatible driver compatible, repair defective hardware, or guarantee that Windows will accept an installation. Those outcomes depend on the device, the driver package, Windows, and the installation conditions.

Bottom line
Driver Easy 5.5.3.15599 was the August 2017 release that made the Free edition’s single-driver workflow easier to follow. Its defining change was the new sidebar guidance for downloading and updating one driver, supported by selected Danish and German translation edits, revised System Restore wording, and unspecified bug fixes. The build was part of the historical Free era; current licensing information places the end of that era at version 6.0.0, with Free applying to 5.8.x and earlier and a 7-day Pro trial offered instead for the newer product line.
