How to Fix Lag, Disconnects, and Rubber-Banding in Co-op Survival Games

Start with reversible network tests, not graphics settings. Check the game and platform status, stop household downloads and streaming, restart your modem and router, and test the host and affected player on wired Ethernet. If the problem follows one host, move hosting to another player; if it follows one player, investigate that player’s connection. Rubber-banding is usually delayed, lost, or conflicting server updates—not automatically a GPU or display problem.

What rubber-banding actually indicates

Rubber-banding is the visible result of a game client and its server disagreeing about the current game state. Your character may move forward, then snap backward; an attack may appear to connect but deal no damage; a player can run in place while the world stops responding; or everyone can be disconnected during a spike. New World Support lists random or sporadic movement, warping, attacks that do not register, players stuck running, sudden disconnections, and lag spikes as common symptoms.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Lag is the delay between an action and the server’s reaction. Bungie Help identifies high latency and packet loss as the most common sources of lag and frequent disconnects. Latency delays delivery of an update. Packet loss means information is lost, has to be retransmitted late, or is discarded. Both can produce the same rubber-band effect, but the remedy is not always the same: a crowded wireless link may improve when traffic stops, while persistent packet loss can require an equipment or ISP investigation.

Why graphics settings rarely cure it

A low frame rate can make movement look uneven on your own screen, but it does not explain a server rejecting an attack, every player snapping back together, or a host dropping the session. First compare the same activity after a network change. If the behavior changes when you switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, stop downloads, or change hosts, you have evidence of a connection or host-path problem. Only investigate graphics performance separately when the game is visually slow without delayed server reactions.

Use this fix order

Perform the checks in order and replay the same in-game activity after each meaningful change. Keeping the scenario consistent makes it easier to identify the change that helped.

  1. Check service status and record the error. Look for an outage affecting the game, its platform, or your region before changing local settings. Write down the exact disconnect message or error code. Bungie notes that error codes help players and partners track the cause of a disconnection. If an outage is confirmed, local troubleshooting will not restore the service.
  2. Remove competing traffic. Pause game updates, operating-system downloads, cloud synchronization, torrents, and high-bandwidth video streams on the household network. Ask other users to stop large transfers temporarily. New World Support says downloads can drastically reduce available bandwidth; Bungie recommends removing other devices or reducing the workload on the router. Test the game again with only the game and its required services active.
  3. Power-cycle the network equipment. Shut down the modem and router, disconnect their power, wait, then reconnect and allow them to finish starting before launching the game. New World documents a 30-second power-off sequence. Paradox documents a two-minute full-device cycle. Use the game’s own support instructions when they differ, and do not assume a quick software reboot performed the same reset.
  4. Test a wired connection. Connect the host and the affected player directly to the router with Ethernet, then repeat the same mission or building session. Bungie says Wi-Fi introduces much more latency than Ethernet, and New World says a wired test rules out wireless interference and a weak signal. If Ethernet removes the problem, improve the wireless path later; for diagnosis, keep the wired connection long enough to verify that the result is repeatable.
  5. Change the host. In a peer-hosted game, have another player create the session and repeat the same activity. If the problem occurs only when one person hosts, that host’s upload stability, hardware load, distance to other players, or firewall restrictions is a leading suspect. Paradox specifically recommends trying another host when firewall restrictions may differ. If every host produces the same behavior, concentrate on the affected player, the game service, or a shared regional route.
  6. Check host capacity and distance. Close heavy applications on the host and watch whether the problem appears when the base is busy, a large fight starts, or many simulation entities are active. Klei explains that host hardware, available bandwidth, and geographic distance influence every connected player. Its Network and Performance Troubleshooting Guide recommends joining servers showing a ping of 150 or below for optimal performance. That 150-ping figure is Klei’s game-specific guidance for its server list, not a universal threshold for every survival game.
  7. Rule out mods and background software. Disable every mod and run the unmodified game. If stability returns, re-enable mods one at a time until the conflicting item is identified. Klei documents disabling mods and then adding them back individually. Close unnecessary background applications as well; New World recommends closing bandwidth-heavy programs and verifying game files on PC. Perform file verification through the launcher’s current repair or verify command, and allow it to complete before testing again.
  8. Escalate to firewall and NAT checks. Confirm that the game executable and its launcher are allowed through the operating system’s firewall on the private network profile. Only after that should you inspect the router’s UPnP setting, reported NAT type, or manual port forwarding. Port numbers are game-specific: Paradox’s Stellaris guidance uses UDP ports 17780–17785, but that range must not be copied to another title. Use that game’s official documentation for the exact protocol and ports, and remove experimental forwarding rules that do not apply.
  9. Contact the ISP or game support when loss persists. If wired testing, a quiet household network, a fresh host, and a power cycle do not help, provide support with the time of the failure, region, error code, host identity, and whether all players were affected. Bungie recommends asking the ISP to check signal levels and infrastructure. Persistent packet loss can involve damaged cables or hardware, modem signal levels, ISP congestion, or an upstream route that you cannot repair from the game client.

Observed pattern Most useful first test What the result suggests
Everyone snaps backward or disconnects together Move the session to another host, preferably on Ethernet The original host’s upload path, hardware load, distance, or firewall/NAT configuration is suspect if the new host is stable.
Only one player freezes, warps, or disconnects Put that player on Ethernet and stop traffic on their local network The player’s Wi-Fi, local congestion, adapter, or ISP path is more likely than the host.
The issue appears only during a large base or combat event Close host applications and compare with a less demanding activity Host CPU/RAM headroom or simulation load may be insufficient.
The issue occurs only with one mod set Disable all mods, then restore one at a time A mod conflict or version mismatch is implicated; keep the stable set.
Every host and activity fails at the same time Check service status and preserve the error code An outage or shared regional/ISP route is more likely than one player’s setup.

These are diagnostic patterns, not guarantees. A session can have more than one fault—for example, a marginal Wi-Fi link on a player and an overloaded host. Change one major variable at a time so the pattern remains meaningful.

Peer hosting, dedicated servers, and LAN: which arrangement fits?

The connection model changes who carries the workload and which fixes are available. Klei notes that a LAN session can connect local players directly, while host or server hardware and network performance affect clients.

Option Host CPU/RAM headroom Upload and distance Mods and host changes Cost and availability Best diagnostic use
Peer-hosted session The hosting player’s machine runs the host simulation as well as their client; headroom varies by game and activity. The host’s upload stability and each player’s distance to that host affect the group. Usually follows the host’s installed and enabled mods; another player can host if the game permits. No separate server fee is inherent, but the game must support peer hosting; a specific cost is not stated. Fastest way to test whether one player’s hardware or network path is the bottleneck.
Dedicated server Server hardware is separate from players’ PCs; adequate CPU, RAM, and network capacity are still required. Can provide a better path or location when the provider is closer and stable, but clients still need good local links. Depends on the game and server configuration; check mod support before moving a world. Often involves a hosting charge, but no universal price is established. Useful when peer host hardware, upload stability, or geography is consistently limiting.
Local LAN session The game’s LAN host still needs enough hardware for the simulation. Players connect on the local network rather than across the internet; wireless interference can still matter. Support is game-specific; all participants must use compatible content. Available only when the title supports LAN; no separate internet server is required. Separates an internet-route problem from a local machine or wireless problem.

A dedicated server is not a universal cure. It can help only when it supplies a better host path and adequate hardware. It cannot repair a player’s bad local Wi-Fi connection, an overloaded home router, or packet loss between that player and the server.

Change one variable at a time

Do not simultaneously change the host, install mods, forward ports, and replace the router. Begin with service status and traffic reduction, then power-cycle, then Ethernet, then host changes. If a change helps, repeat the original activity to confirm the improvement before moving on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret a failed test correctly

If Ethernet does not help, that does not prove the game is at fault; it simply makes wireless interference less likely. If another host fails too, inspect shared traffic, service status, and regional routing. If disabling mods helps, restore them individually rather than reinstalling everything and losing the evidence.

Firewall, NAT, and port-forwarding cautions

Firewalls can block the connections needed for invitations, synchronization, or voice and session traffic. Start by allowing the game and launcher through the firewall and confirming that the rule applies to the network profile you actually use. Then check the game’s displayed NAT status and the router’s UPnP behavior.

Manual forwarding is an escalation step, not a default performance tweak. A port rule that belongs to one game can be wrong for another, expose an unnecessary service, or conflict with another device. Paradox documents UDP 17780–17785 for Stellaris; that example is limited to Stellaris and must not be generalized. Follow the exact official instructions for your title, protocol, platform, and server mode.

When replacing equipment is justified

Use the wired test before buying anything. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical diagnostic because it can show whether wireless interference or signal weakness is involved. If wired play is stable but Wi-Fi remains unreliable across several devices, an obsolete or unstable router may justify replacement with current gigabit or Wi-Fi 6 hardware. That is a conditional remedy, not a guaranteed ping improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace or inspect cables, modem hardware, or router placement only after confirming the failure pattern. If multiple wired devices show packet loss at the same time, ask the ISP to check the line and modem signal levels rather than treating a new gaming router as the first answer.

What not to assume

  • There is no universal bandwidth minimum in the available guidance. Game netcode, player count, host simulation, and update size vary, so do not treat an invented Mbps figure as a guarantee.
  • There is no universal acceptable packet-loss percentage stated here. Any recurring loss that produces retransmissions, warping, or disconnects deserves investigation, even when a speed test reports a high download rate.
  • A low ping number does not prove a healthy session. Latency and packet loss are different conditions, and a brief test can miss intermittent loss.
  • More graphics power is not automatically the answer. Network symptoms require network tests; a faster GPU cannot restore updates that never arrive.
  • Port forwarding is not a general lag fix. It is game-specific and should follow firewall checks and official documentation.

When to stop troubleshooting locally

Move to ISP or game support when the issue remains after a quiet household network, a complete power cycle, wired testing, an alternate host, disabled mods, and correct firewall permissions. Include the game version and platform, region, exact error code, approximate times, whether the host or every player was affected, and the results of Ethernet and alternate-host tests. This information lets support distinguish a local wireless problem from a service outage, modem signal issue, congestion, or upstream route failure.
