How to Fix Lag, Disconnects, and Low FPS in Old School RuneScape

Fix Old School RuneScape problems by identifying the symptom first: high ping, world-specific freezes, and disconnects are connection issues; consistently low frame rates are usually graphics or PC-performance issues; delayed clicks can be input lag. Check the service status, compare worlds, measure the change after each setting adjustment, and only then change hardware. The sequence below separates those causes so a graphics tweak does not waste time on a routing fault.

Start by identifying what is actually lagging

Players use lag for several different failures. Jagex separates poor connection, graphical problems, and input lag in its support guidance. The distinction matters because each one has a different remedy.

What you notice Likely class Useful first test
High ping, actions arriving late, a freeze followed by your character catching up, or drops that occur on one world or at one time Connection or routing Check service updates, then compare several worlds and record the pattern
The game is consistently choppy, the frame rate falls when the camera moves, or the client reports low FPS Graphics or PC performance Check the recommended specifications, GPU selection, drivers, workloads, and graphics settings
Clicks feel delayed even when the connection is stable and FPS is acceptable Input and display latency Test VSync off and compare a high-refresh monitor with a TV or older display
Brief stutters with no clear pattern Connection, graphics, or both Measure ping and frame time separately while reproducing the stutter

Jagex defines ping as the round-trip time, in milliseconds, for a small packet to travel from your computer to a server and return. A longer round trip generally indicates a problem somewhere between your system and the game servers. Ping is not an FPS measurement: a game can have smooth rendering with a poor connection, or high ping with a steady frame rate.

Check for an outage before changing your PC

  1. Look at Jagex and Old School service updates first. A server-side incident cannot be repaired by changing RuneLite settings, reinstalling drivers, or buying hardware.
  2. If no incident is listed, note the exact time, account world, symptom, and whether other online services work. A pattern shared by many players is evidence of a service or routing event rather than a local graphics fault.
  3. Reproduce the problem briefly after the status page is clear. If it has disappeared, avoid making permanent changes based on a temporary outage.

How to fix high ping and world-specific lag

Compare worlds methodically

Log into two or more geographically different worlds and perform the same short activity in each. If one world is consistently delayed while others are responsive, the world or network path to it is the leading suspect. If every world is affected at the same time, investigate your connection or a wider service event. Record the world numbers and timestamps; this information is more useful to support than a general statement that the game feels slow.

Remove competing traffic

Use the most stable broadband connection available and test while large downloads, cloud synchronisation, game updates, video streams, and other high-volume activity are paused. The purpose is isolation, not a promise that a particular router, cable, DNS service, or networking product will cure OSRS lag. If the problem vanishes when competing traffic stops, restore workloads one at a time to find the source of congestion.

Separate local internet failure from the game path

  • When OSRS freezes, check another web service immediately. If several services fail, troubleshoot the broadband or local network first.
  • If other services remain usable but one group of worlds is slow, preserve the world and time pattern for Jagex support.
  • If the issue occurs only on Wi-Fi, compare a wired connection or a different access point as a controlled test. Do not treat a single successful test as proof that the cable or access point is permanently fixed.

What to do when OSRS keeps disconnecting

  1. Capture the exact error message rather than paraphrasing it.
  2. Write down the UTC or local time, selected world, activity, and whether the client recovered by itself.
  3. Check whether other internet applications lost connectivity at that moment.
  4. Repeat on another world. A failure limited to one world or time window points toward the route or server path; failures everywhere point toward the local connection or a broader service incident.
  5. After these checks, send the collected details to Jagex Support. Include operating system, client used, network type, and the shortest sequence that reliably reproduces the drop.

Do not infer a graphics fault from a disconnect. A client can render at a high frame rate and still lose its server connection, and lowering texture quality cannot repair a broken route.

How to fix low FPS in the official client

Verify the computer against Jagex recommendations

Start with Jagex’s current recommended specifications for Old School RuneScape. The recommendation is a baseline, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate in every scene or on every display. If the machine is below the recommendation, reduce graphics load before investigating advanced settings.

Lower the settings that increase rendering work

Reduce draw distance, detail, scaling, anti-aliasing, shadows, and other visual options in small steps. Change one setting, reproduce the same scene, and note the FPS or frame-time change. A lower setting that produces no measurable improvement is not addressing the bottleneck; restore it and test another option. Keep a written before-and-after result so a later change can be reversed.

  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Make sure the client uses the intended GPU

Jagex warns that selecting integrated graphics instead of a dedicated GPU can cause low FPS and other performance problems. On a laptop or a system with more than one adapter, verify the GPU assigned to the client in the operating system’s graphics settings or the vendor control panel. The adapter name alone is not enough: reproduce the game scene after changing it and confirm that utilization and frame rate respond.

Update drivers and close competing workloads

Install current graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer, then restart the computer before retesting. Close applications that consume CPU, GPU, or memory, including browsers with many video tabs, recording or streaming software, virtual machines, and other games. Jagex describes these as underlying PC-performance checks; they are safer first steps than installing an unverified optimizer.

Clear the cache when textures are wrong

Warped, missing, or incorrectly coloured textures are a cache symptom rather than ordinary network lag. Clear the Old School cache using the client’s supported reset or cache-clear option, let it rebuild completely, and test again. The first run can take longer while assets are downloaded. Clearing a cache will not lower ping, so use it for visual corruption rather than disconnects.

Use Safe Mode only as a diagnostic fallback

Jagex’s Old School Safe Mode uses the CPU instead of the graphics card and will generally have low FPS. It is useful for determining whether a graphics-driver or GPU path is involved, but it is not a performance mode. If Safe Mode removes crashes or rendering corruption, return to normal mode and work on drivers, GPU selection, or hardware compatibility.

RuneLite: GPU plugin requirements and fixes

RuneLite’s GPU plugin has explicit requirements: Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11, macOS, or Linux; a GPU supporting OpenGL 4.3 or newer; and at least 2 GB of VRAM. Supported Nvidia, AMD, and Intel hardware still needs current drivers. If the computer or driver does not meet these conditions, the plugin can be disabled, unstable, or slower than the CPU renderer.

When the GPU plugin turns off or runs very slowly

  1. Confirm that the installed RuneLite build matches the system architecture. On Nvidia systems, use the correct 32-bit or 64-bit build for the operating system.
  2. Open NVIDIA Control Panel and assign RuneLite to the Nvidia GPU instead of integrated graphics.
  3. Update the Nvidia, AMD, or Intel driver, restart, and test the same in-game location.
  4. Check VRAM and OpenGL support against the plugin requirements before changing additional settings.

When enabling the plugin crashes RuneLite

RuneLite’s GPU FAQ advises disabling hardware acceleration and checking the requirements when enabling the plugin causes a crash. Treat that as an isolation step: run without GPU acceleration, confirm that the base client is stable, then re-enable only after the driver and hardware checks pass. If the crash returns, leave the plugin off and provide RuneLite with the client log and hardware details.

What the GPU plugin can and cannot improve

RuneLite says GPU rendering can provide better FPS, increased draw distance, enhanced scaling, and anti-aliasing. Those are rendering benefits, not network benefits. The plugin cannot lower the round-trip time to a server, repair a route to one world, or prevent a service outage.

Use the Jagex Launcher and isolate client changes

Launch RuneLite through the Jagex Launcher integration documented by Jagex when that is your normal supported setup. Keep the launch path consistent while testing; changing the launcher, client, and plugins simultaneously makes the result impossible to interpret.

Test a clean RuneLite profile

  1. Temporarily disable recently added or updated Plugin Hub plugins.
  2. Reproduce the problem with a clean profile and the same world, location, and display settings.
  3. If the clean profile is smooth, re-enable plugins in small groups until the regression returns.
  4. Leave the offending plugin disabled and report its name, version, and reproduction steps to its maintainer.

You can also reproduce the same activity in the official client. This is a diagnostic comparison, not evidence that one client is universally faster. A problem present in both clients is more likely to be system, display, connection, or service related; a problem present only in one clean client points toward that client’s configuration or plugin path.

Should you turn off VSync?

VSync synchronizes the game’s FPS with the monitor refresh rate. Jagex states that enabling it can reduce FPS by up to 50%, so turning it off is a reasonable reversible test for low FPS or delayed input.

  1. Open the client’s graphics settings.
  2. Turn VSync off.
  3. Repeat the same movement or camera test and compare FPS, frame-time consistency, and click response.
  4. Keep it off only if the result is better for your display. If tearing is distracting or the frame rate is already stable, restore the setting and test another cause.

VSync is not a cure for high ping. A faster-looking response after disabling it indicates a display or frame-pacing change, not a repaired server connection.

Fixing delayed input and display lag

Jagex notes that a monitor generally has a higher refresh rate than a television and should improve input lag. A gaming monitor can therefore be a relevant hardware change when clicks feel delayed despite stable ping and adequate FPS. Choose it only after software tests establish that the display path is the limiting factor.

  • Confirm that the operating system is actually set to the panel’s highest supported refresh rate.
  • Measure click-to-response feel in the same game scene before and after the change.

A monitor cannot fix disconnects, high ping, routing faults, or a Jagex outage. It changes the time between rendered frames and your visible response, not the path between your computer and the game server.

Measure the result instead of guessing

For each test, keep the world, location, activity, and client constant. Record three separate observations:

  • Connection: ping or the visible delay, plus whether movement catches up after a freeze.
  • Rendering: FPS or frame-time consistency while moving the camera and entering a busy area.
  • Input: the time it takes for a click or key press to produce a visible response.

Change one variable at a time, run the test long enough to encounter the original symptom, and revert changes that do not help. There is no authoritative independent FPS target or OSRS disconnect-rate statistic established here, so do not treat an internet benchmark as a guaranteed requirement for every account or scene.

A practical decision path

  1. All worlds are delayed and other services also fail: investigate the local broadband or Wi-Fi path.
  2. Only one world or time window is delayed: preserve the pattern, try another world, and escalate with timestamps rather than lowering graphics settings.
  3. Ping is normal but FPS stays low: check specifications, GPU selection, drivers, competing workloads, and graphics settings.
  4. RuneLite alone is slow or crashes: verify OpenGL 4.3 and 2 GB VRAM requirements, correct the build and GPU assignment, then test without hardware acceleration or Plugin Hub additions.
  5. FPS is stable but clicks feel late: test VSync off and compare a high-refresh monitor with a TV.
  6. Textures are missing or coloured incorrectly: clear the cache and allow it to rebuild.
  7. Safe Mode is smooth only in terms of stability but has low FPS: use that result to investigate the GPU path; do not keep Safe Mode as the performance solution.

When to contact support

Escalate after the service check, world comparison, competing-traffic test, and client isolation have produced a repeatable symptom. Include the exact error, date and time, world, client and launcher, operating system, GPU, whether other internet services failed, and the before-and-after measurements. That evidence lets support distinguish a server-path problem from a local graphics or input problem without asking you to repeat every basic test.
