How to Fix Lag and Disconnections in Steam Remote Play Together Horror Games

Start with the network path, not the horror game. Steam Remote Play Together runs the game on the host computer and sends a live video and audio stream to the other player while returning their controller or keyboard input. Ethernet, a clean 5 GHz Wi‑Fi link, correct firewall access, sensible bandwidth limits, and compatible hardware encoding usually determine whether the session is smooth. Horror games do not use a special networking protocol, so the same diagnosis applies to every Remote Play Together title.

What Steam Remote Play Together is actually doing

Remote Play Together is a real-time stream from the host PC. The host renders the game, compresses each frame, sends video and audio across the network, and receives the remote player’s input. The client is therefore not simply downloading a game; it must continuously receive and decode a low-latency stream.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That architecture explains several confusing symptoms. A friend can still move a character while your screen is frozen because input packets may be arriving even when video packets are delayed. A game can show high ping while the stream remains smooth if the delay is consistent, whereas short bursts of variable network time produce visible stutter. A disconnect can be caused by a blocked port, router isolation, an overloaded host, or a codec failure rather than by the game itself.

Use the troubleshooting order below: establish a wired baseline, watch the performance overlay, improve Wi‑Fi if wiring is impossible, verify firewall and router access, reduce stream demand, test host encoding and client decoding separately, then tune the game and drivers. Change one group of settings at a time so you know which intervention helped.

Before changing settings: identify the scope of the failure

First determine whether the problem follows one title, one player, or every Remote Play Together session. Invite the same client to a lightweight game and then test the horror game again. If every title stutters, prioritize the network, firewall, router, or hardware path. If only one game fails, its resolution, frame pacing, V‑Sync behavior, or unusually high host CPU load is more likely involved.

Also note who is hosting. The host performs the rendering and encoding, so moving the host role to the other player is a useful diagnostic. If the same client becomes smooth when the other computer hosts, investigate the original host’s CPU, graphics driver, encoder, or upload path.

1. Establish a wired baseline

Connect the host gaming computer directly to the router with Ethernet. If practical, connect the client by Ethernet as well, and run one complete session before changing quality or codec options. Valve says it highly recommends a direct Ethernet connection and warns that wireless and power-line links can suffer interference and intermittent failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Plug the host into a LAN port on the main router, not a power-line adapter or a distant wireless bridge.
  2. Disable any VPN or traffic-tunneling software temporarily so the test follows the shortest normal route.
  3. Restart Steam on both computers and begin the same Remote Play Together invitation.
  4. Play long enough to reproduce the fault, noting whether a scene change, a second player joining, or a period of local network activity triggers it.

If wiring the host removes the freezes, the wireless or power-line segment was the likely source. Keep the wired connection as the reference configuration while testing other changes; otherwise you can mistake two simultaneous changes for a fix.

2. Use Steam’s overlay to separate network jitter from rendering problems

Steam includes a Remote Play Streaming Performance Overlay in its advanced streaming settings. Enable it during a session and watch the network-time trace while the game is running.

Large spikes in the cyan network-time line indicate highly variable network time, which is the main indicator of streaming network trouble. Spikes that coincide with stutter or a frozen picture point toward congestion, interference, queueing in the router, or a weak wireless path. If the cyan line stays stable while frames still hitch, investigate host rendering, encoding, decoding, or the game itself instead of repeatedly changing the router.

Capture what the overlay shows in both a failing wireless session and the wired baseline. The comparison is more useful than a single speed-test result because Remote Play needs consistent, low-variation delivery rather than only a high maximum download rate.

3. Improve Wi‑Fi when Ethernet is not practical

Use the 5 GHz band whenever the devices can maintain a strong signal. The 2.4 GHz band travels farther but is commonly crowded by neighboring networks and household devices. Place the host and client where the router signal is strong, avoid enclosing the router in a cabinet, and keep the access point away from cordless-phone bases, microwave ovens, and other sources of interference.

Valve recommends an 802.11ac router; 802.11n operating on 5 GHz is the next-best option in its guidance. A newer Wi‑Fi standard does not compensate for a weak signal or a congested channel, so test from the same room as the router before buying equipment.

Stop competing traffic during diagnosis. Pause large downloads and cloud backups, and stop movie or music streaming, BitTorrent transfers, and Chromecast activity. Even when those services do not consume the entire connection, their bursts can fill the router’s queue and create the cyan-line spikes that Remote Play exposes.

If only the client is wireless, wire the host first. The host’s upload stream is continuous and is usually the most valuable link to stabilize. If the client remains on Wi‑Fi, move it closer to the access point and retest on 5 GHz.

4. Check firewall rules, ports, and router isolation

A perfect signal cannot help if the host or router blocks Remote Play traffic. On the host computer, allow Steam Remote Play through the firewall on these ports:

Protocol Ports Purpose in troubleshooting
UDP 27031, 27036 Real-time Remote Play traffic; blocking can cause failed connections or severe stutter.
TCP 27036, 27037 Session and supporting Steam communication; blocking can prevent connection establishment or recovery.

Recheck the rule after a Steam client or game update. An updated executable can receive a new firewall entry, so a setup that worked last week may silently be denied today. If a security suite has its own application-control list, permit Steam there as well as in the operating-system firewall.

Open the router’s wireless settings and disable access-point isolation, client isolation, or a similarly named guest-device separation feature for the network used by the two players. These features intentionally prevent devices on the same network from contacting each other and can break Remote Play discovery or data transfer.

Do not diagnose Remote Play on a captive or restricted network. Valve says Remote Play is not supported in most cases on public, workplace, school or university, guest, captive-portal, login-required, or otherwise isolated networks. Hotel and campus Wi‑Fi can therefore fail even when ordinary web browsing works. Move both players to a private home network or use a network where device-to-device traffic is allowed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Reduce stream demand and prioritize Steam traffic

When the connection is marginal, lower the stream’s demand before chasing advanced codec settings. In Steam’s Remote Play options, set streaming quality to Balanced or Fast. Valve recommends starting around 3 Mbit/s, then increasing the bandwidth limit until hitches appear and dropping it back to the last stable value. That procedure finds the capacity your particular route can sustain instead of assuming that an advertised broadband speed is available to one real-time stream.

  1. Open Steam and go to the Remote Play settings.
  2. Open the advanced host streaming options and choose the Balanced or Fast quality preset.
  3. Set an initial bandwidth limit near 3 Mbit/s.
  4. Run the same game section for several minutes.
  5. Increase the limit in small steps only while the overlay remains stable. When hitches return, reduce the limit to the previous stable setting.

Enable Prioritize Network Traffic in Steam’s advanced host options. If the router offers Quality of Service (QoS), bandwidth priority, or device prioritization, give the host and client priority over bulk downloads and streaming video. QoS cannot repair a weak radio signal or a blocked port, but it can prevent another device from filling the connection at the exact moment a frame must arrive.

Do not raise the bandwidth limit merely because the picture looks soft. A slightly lower resolution with consistent delivery is preferable to a sharper stream that freezes every few seconds, especially in a game where timing and audio cues matter.

6. Separate encoding and decoding problems

Remote Play has two hardware-sensitive stages: the host encodes the rendered frames, and the client decodes the H.264 stream. Test those stages independently so a codec fault is not mistaken for network loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test host hardware encoding

In Steam’s advanced host streaming options, toggle hardware encoding and repeat the same scene. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU use, but a graphics driver or encoder implementation can also introduce corruption, frame drops, or disconnects. Compare the enabled and disabled states while keeping the network and bandwidth settings unchanged.

Test client hardware decoding

On the client, toggle hardware decoding and repeat the test. The client GPU must support hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding for the best experience, but a faulty driver or an incompatible decoder can make a stable stream appear to freeze. If disabling hardware decoding makes the picture reliable, update the graphics driver and retest before deciding which mode to keep.

Valve documents a known incompatibility involving NVIDIA hardware encoding with a software decoder, as well as a macOS hardware-decoder incompatibility. If the symptoms began after changing either side’s hardware-acceleration option, reverse that change or test the matching hardware path. Keep a note of the host encoder and client decoder states for any support report.

Inspect the host log when audio or streaming errors persist

When the overlay is stable but the session still reports audio or stream failures, inspect the host’s streaming_log.txt. Look for errors that occur at the same timestamp as the freeze or disconnect. A log entry that repeats across sessions is stronger evidence of an encoder, audio, or Steam configuration problem than a one-off warning during startup.

7. Lower the game’s load and update drivers

Use conservative game settings while troubleshooting. Lower the horror game’s resolution and turn off V‑Sync temporarily. A lower render resolution reduces the work the host must complete before encoding, while disabling V‑Sync can reveal whether the game’s frame pacing is waiting on a display refresh. Once the stream is stable, re-enable options one at a time to find the highest reliable setting.

Valve recommends at least a quad-core CPU for the host. The requirement matters because the host must run the game, capture frames, encode video, handle audio, and process the remote player’s input at the same time. Close CPU-heavy launchers, browser tabs, recording software, and overlays during the test. If the host CPU is saturated, network adjustments will not remove the resulting frame drops.

Update the graphics drivers on both computers. Driver bugs can affect game rendering, hardware encoding, or H.264 decoding, and a driver update can change behavior without any Steam setting being altered. Reboot after installation so the new encoder and decoder components are actually loaded.

Disconnections began after an update. Firewall rule or driver change Re-authorize Steam in security software and update or roll back the graphics driver as appropriate.

10. A clean recovery sequence for repeated disconnects

When a session has failed several times, return to a known state instead of stacking random tweaks.

  1. End Remote Play on both computers and quit Steam completely.
  2. Reconnect the host by Ethernet and confirm that the router shows an active wired link.
  3. Restart the router only if ordinary local-network connectivity is also unreliable; otherwise avoid adding an unnecessary variable.
  4. Launch Steam, confirm the firewall permissions, and make sure neither device is on a guest or captive network.
  5. Use Balanced or Fast quality with a bandwidth limit near 3 Mbit/s and enable Prioritize Network Traffic.
  6. Start the game at a lower resolution with V‑Sync off.
  7. Run one test with hardware encoding and decoding enabled, then a second test with the suspected side toggled if the first test fails.
  8. Watch the performance overlay and record the exact moment of any cyan-line spike, freeze, or disconnect.

This sequence gives you a reproducible baseline. Restore higher quality, V‑Sync, or hardware acceleration one setting at a time only after the baseline remains stable.

11. Gather useful evidence before contacting Steam Support

A detailed report lets support distinguish a network path from a codec or game-load problem. Record:

  • Whether the host and client used Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, or a power-line link.
  • Whether the cyan network-time line spiked when the fault occurred.
  • Steam’s quality preset and bandwidth limit.
  • Whether Prioritize Network Traffic was enabled.
  • Host hardware-encoding and client hardware-decoding states.
  • The host CPU and GPU, client GPU, operating systems, and graphics-driver versions.
  • Whether the issue affects every Remote Play Together game or only one title.
  • Firewall rules, router isolation settings, and whether the network was private, guest, public, or captive.
  • Relevant errors and timestamps from the host’s streaming_log.txt.

Include the exact steps that reproduce the problem, such as joining a second player, entering a particular level, or starting another download. Support can act on a controlled comparison—wired versus wireless, one host versus the other, or hardware decoding on versus off—far more readily than on a report that simply says the game is laggy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the connection is good but the game still feels delayed

Not every delay is a network fault. If the overlay shows stable network time and the host is not CPU-bound, check the game’s frame rate and input settings. A host rendering below its target frame rate can make the stream feel sluggish even though packets arrive on time. Lowering resolution, closing background applications, and removing V‑Sync during the test distinguishes render latency from transport latency.

Likewise, a client that cannot decode H.264 efficiently may display frames late while the network remains healthy. Compare hardware-decoding modes and verify the client’s graphics driver. The goal is to identify the stage—render, encode, transmit, decode, or display—where time is being added, rather than treating every visible delay as ping.
