If your Kindle Paperwhite will not charge, start by checking the cable connections and outlet, then test a compatible cable. Confirm the connector matches your Paperwhite’s generation before replacing accessories. If the reader is wet, unusually hot, physically damaged, or still will not charge after these checks, stop troubleshooting and contact Amazon Customer Support.
Check the charging path first
A charging problem can come from the outlet, adapter, cable, or reader. Check these in order, changing one item at a time so you can identify what makes a difference.

- Reconnect both ends. Make sure the cable is firmly attached to the Paperwhite and to the power source. Amazon’s device startup guidance recommends checking cable and adapter connections.
- Test the outlet. Plug another electrical item into the same outlet, or use an outlet you know works. If you are charging through a computer, check that the computer’s USB port is powered and working.
- Try a compatible cable. Use the cable supplied with the reader if available, or another cable that matches its port and is compatible. Amazon recommends a compatible USB cable and notes that a shorter cable may help if a longer one is not delivering enough power. Avoid assuming that any cable that fits is suitable.
- Check the adapter or USB port. Try a known-working, compliant power source. If the reader charges from one source but not another, the issue may be with the adapter, USB port, or outlet rather than the Kindle.
Confirm the Paperwhite’s connector and charging guidance
Paperwhite generations do not all share the same connector. Check the exact generation and the physical port on your reader before buying a cable or charger.

Amazon’s 11th-generation Kindle setup page specifies USB-C. It describes charging from a computer with the supplied cable and charging from an outlet with a separately sold Amazon 5W charger. That guidance is specific to the cited model; do not treat it as a universal requirement for every Paperwhite generation or region.

Paperwhite Signature Edition 12th Generation
Amazon’s 12th-generation Signature Edition safety document lists an electrical rating of 5 V, 1.5 A and an operating range of 0–35°C. These are specifications for that model, not a charging specification for every Paperwhite.
If the Kindle is new or downloading content
A recently set-up Kindle may use more battery while it downloads books or updates. Large downloads and the indexing that follows can also increase battery use. Amazon recommends keeping the device connected while these activities finish and for a period afterward. This can explain faster-than-expected battery use during setup, but it does not establish why a reader never registers a charge.

Stop if the device may be wet, hot, or damaged
- Water exposure: For the Paperwhite 11th Generation, Amazon says to let the device dry fully in a well-ventilated place before reconnecting the USB-C cable. Do not use an external heat source to dry it.
- Unusual heat: Unplug the reader and let it cool. Amazon’s IEEE 1725 battery safety guidance says Kindle should be charged only between 32°F and 95°F (0°C and 35°C). The cited range is Amazon’s safety guidance, not a diagnosis of the fault.
- Port damage or a drop: Do not keep trying to charge a reader with a visibly damaged port or suspected internal damage. Contact Amazon Customer Support.
- Possible battery failure: Do not open the reader or try to access or replace its battery. Amazon says battery replacement should be done by a qualified service provider.
Do not insert a cotton swab, paper towel, or other object into the USB-C port. Amazon explicitly warns against inserting foreign objects; probing or scraping the port can cause damage.
When to contact Amazon
Contact Amazon Customer Support if the reader still will not charge after checking the connections, outlet, compatible cable, and power source, or if you see port damage, suspect battery damage, or the device was dropped. Battery access and replacement are not user repairs: Amazon’s battery safety information says a rechargeable lithium-ion battery should not be opened or accessed by the user and should be replaced by a qualified provider.

Before contacting support, note the Paperwhite generation, what power source and cable you tried, and whether the device has been wet, dropped, or unusually hot. This helps distinguish a power-accessory issue from a problem that needs service.
