There is no clearly established, ready-made one-for-one replacement for OpenAI Dots. If you need to hand off a substantial task, ChatGPT Work is a partial fit; for a reminder or recurring check, consider scheduled tasks. Meta Muse is another always-on assistant to investigate. Developers can build with OpenAI’s Agents API or SDK, but those are platforms—not plug-and-play replacements. Which option fits depends on whether you need work to continue between conversations, or simply want a task run later.
What makes OpenAI Dots different?
OpenAI describes a Dot as “an always-on agent in ChatGPT that can take on ongoing responsibility and keep making progress between conversations.” According to OpenAI’s Help Center description, a Dot has its own cloud computer, can use apps a person chooses to connect, and remembers context. The user sets a goal and defines what the Dot may do independently; it can return results for review and ask for decisions requiring human judgment.

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra System Card also describes recurring work, connected tools, follow-ups across ChatGPT, text message, email, and Slack, and delegation to subagents. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent evidence that every workflow will work reliably or that a long-running agent is risk-free. The card frames its appendix around evaluating safeguards for proactive, long-running work.

For a substantial task: ChatGPT Work
Choose this route when the immediate need is to delegate a defined, multi-step job—for example, research that involves working with files, apps, or the web. It addresses task handoff, not necessarily the defining Dots promise of continuing to make progress between conversations. Treat it as a way to get work done, not as proof that you have an always-on agent.
For something that should happen later: scheduled tasks
Scheduled tasks suit work with a clear trigger or cadence: a reminder, a briefing, or a periodic check. Scheduling can cover one part of an always-on workflow, but it is not the same as assigning an agent ongoing responsibility and context. If the job must adapt as circumstances change, confirm that the task feature supports the interaction you need rather than assuming a schedule provides persistent agency.

For another always-on assistant: Meta Muse
Muse is worth investigating if persistence is your main requirement. The reporting available here names it as another option but does not verify feature parity with Dots or establish details such as connected services and controls. Check Meta’s current documentation before relying on it for a particular workflow.

For developers: OpenAI’s agent-building tools
OpenAI’s Agents documentation distinguishes managed and developer-controlled approaches. The Agents API is described as a managed Codex harness for long-running tasks, with OpenAI managing agent infrastructure and saving progress. The Agents SDK runs in the developer’s application, leaving the application in control of deployment, storage, approvals, and runtime integration. The Responses API is a more direct integration route.
These are building blocks, not consumer services you can simply switch on as a Dots substitute. They make sense when you can implement and maintain the surrounding application and want control over how the agent runs.
Check these differences before choosing
“Always-on” can mean a persistent agent, a task that runs after handoff, or an action scheduled for later. Compare the actual operating model rather than relying on the label.

- Persistence: Does the system keep responsibility between conversations, run one handed-off job, or execute a scheduled prompt?
- Computer and state: Where does the agent work, and where is its context or progress stored?
- Access: Which apps, tools, and communication channels can it use?
- Authority and oversight: Which actions can it take independently? Can you inspect its work, approve decisions, and stop it?
- Eligibility: Does your region, subscription, or workspace allow access?
- Deployment: Do you want a ready-made product, or are you prepared to build and operate a custom agent?
These checks matter because an agent that persists or acts proactively needs clear boundaries around its access and authority. OpenAI’s safety-card appendix specifically treats proactive, long-running work as a distinct evaluation and safeguards concern.
Who can currently try OpenAI Dots?
Availability below reflects OpenAI’s Help Center page accessed on October 3, 2026, and may change. At that time, OpenAI said Dots were gradually rolling out to ChatGPT Pro users outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, and to Business Premium users in supported ChatGPT regions. Enterprise users—including Edu and Healthcare—could try the beta if a workspace administrator enabled it; it was initially off by default. OpenAI said the gradual rollout could take several days to reach accounts.
The first Dot was included in eligible Pro or Business Premium plans, with deeper-work allowance and extended limits during the first month after launch. The Help Center page did not state an exact work allowance or a standalone price. OpenAI said adding Dots or increasing speed or monthly work capacity would be possible in the future, but that is not a published price or current entitlement.
Dots are created in ChatGPT desktop or desktop web, not mobile or mobile web. The Help Center says mobile-app conversation access is available when enabled. A Dot’s cloud computer is separate from the user’s local computer; local-computer access is optional and starts turned off. Check the current Help Center page for eligibility and setup details before choosing a workaround based on availability.
