Dawn of War IV has four headline factions: Space Marines (the Blood Ravens), Orks, Necrons, and Adeptus Mechanicus. The Dark Angels are also playable in campaign missions, but they are a Space Marine sub-faction, not a fifth headline faction. Official information establishes each faction’s story role and confirms that their gameplay is mechanically distinct; it does not yet support a reliable ranking of their tactics, economies, or multiplayer strength.

Which factions are in Dawn of War IV?

The official roster has four headline factions: Space Marines, represented by the Blood Ravens; Orks; Necrons; and Adeptus Mechanicus. The Adeptus Mechanicus is a newcomer to the Dawn of War series. The game returns to real-time strategy built around mass battles and base building, and also features a Sync Kill system. Warhammer Community’s announcement introduces the roster and series return.

Dark Angels appear in the campaign as a playable Space Marine sub-faction. They add another chapter to command, but do not change the count of headline factions.

How the factions compare

Faction Roster status Stated role on Kronus What official information establishes about play
Blood Ravens / Space Marines One of the four headline factions Captain Cyrus and his company must rebuild and defend their recruitment world, Kronus; their ability to receive reinforcements matters to the conflict. The official FAQ says factions are mechanically distinct and gives each a unique campaign. A specific Blood Ravens unit, economy, or tactical profile is not established in the cited official material.
Dark Angels Playable Space Marine sub-faction in campaign missions; not a separate headline faction Company Master Astoran and Chaplain Ezrael lead them as they join the fighting on Kronus. Official material characterizes them through ruthless precision, discipline, and experience in large-scale battles. It does not establish a detailed comparative unit or economy profile.
Orks One of the four headline factions Two rival Warbosses compete to lead a major Waaagh across Kronus. They receive a unique campaign, but the reviewed official sources do not substantiate specific economy or unit tactics.
Necrons One of the four headline factions An invasion fleet and forces from tombs beneath Kronus seek to claim the planet; Chronomancer Thothmek is named in official material. They receive a unique campaign. The story’s ancient-tech and persistence themes do not, on their own, confirm particular gameplay mechanics.
Adeptus Mechanicus One of the four headline factions; a series newcomer They pursue lost knowledge and artifacts on Kronus. They receive a unique campaign as one of the four mechanically distinct factions. A detailed tactical or economy description is not established in the cited material.

These story details come from Warhammer Community’s campaign announcement and the official Deep Silver Dawn of War IV FAQ. The descriptions distinguish each faction’s reason for fighting without treating narrative themes as confirmed rules.

Are the Dark Angels a separate faction?

No. Warhammer Community identifies the Dark Angels as a Space Marine sub-faction that players command in different campaign missions. Their named leaders are Company Master Astoran and Chaplain Ezrael. The official Dark Angels trailer page describes their battlefield character as “ruthless precision and relentless discipline.” That is a description of their identity, not enough to conclude that they have a particular confirmed combat bonus or multiplayer role.

The Blood Ravens and Dark Angels therefore occupy different campaign roles within the broader Space Marine faction: the Blood Ravens are one of the four headline factions, while Dark Angels provide a separate chapter perspective in campaign missions.

What is confirmed about campaigns and gameplay?

Deep Silver’s official FAQ says the game has “four mechanically distinct factions,” each with a unique campaign that feeds into one overarching narrative. That confirms the intended breadth of the faction and campaign setup, but not the detailed mechanics needed to compare how factions gather resources, build armies, or perform against one another.

The official material reviewed for this comparison does not establish a complete faction-by-faction unit roster, economy rules, strengths and weaknesses, or multiplayer balance data. A definitive “best faction” ranking would therefore go beyond what is confirmed. Tabletop Warhammer 40,000 rules should not be treated as proof of how these factions work in this RTS.

Which faction should you play?

There is not enough confirmed mechanical detail to recommend a faction on tactical grounds. For now, the clearest way to choose is by the campaign premise that interests you:

  • Choose Blood Ravens if you want to follow Captain Cyrus and a force trying to rebuild and defend its home world.
  • Look for the Dark Angels campaign missions if you are interested in a disciplined Space Marine chapter led by Astoran and Ezrael. They are campaign-playable, but not a separate headline faction.
  • Choose Orks if a story about rival Warbosses and a contest to lead a Waaagh appeals to you.
  • Choose Necrons if you are drawn to an invasion tied to buried tombs and the claim to Kronus.
  • Choose Adeptus Mechanicus if the pursuit of lost knowledge and artifacts is the most compelling premise.

Official information currently lists Dawn of War IV for PC via Steam, with a release date of December 3, 2026. The FAQ says Commander Edition buyers receive early access beginning November 30, 2026. Check the official FAQ and Steam listing for current date and edition details, which may change.
