To fix Kindle syncing, first make sure both devices use the same Amazon account, are online, and have sync enabled. Then run a manual sync. If the reading position still differs, troubleshoot progress syncing; if a book is missing entirely, check its delivery and library status in Amazon’s content settings.
Before you start: identify what is not syncing
Kindle sync uses an internet connection to share reading position and related reading data among linked Kindle devices and apps. Sync must be enabled on the device or app and in your Amazon account settings. Amazon says it is enabled by default, but it can be turned off. See Amazon’s Kindle sync settings guidance.

- Reading position is wrong: the book is present, but another device has not picked up your latest page or position.
- The book is missing: this may be a library, delivery, or order issue rather than a reading-position sync problem.
Fix a reading position that will not update
- Connect both devices. On a Kindle e-reader, turn on Wi-Fi and make sure Airplane mode is off. In a Kindle app, confirm the device has an internet connection.
- Check that both are registered to the same Amazon account. A book or reading position associated with a different account will not appear as expected on the other device.
- Check sync in the app or on the e-reader.
- In a Kindle app, open More → Settings → Sync.
- On a Kindle e-reader, open More → Settings → Device Options → Sync.
- Check account-level sync. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices → Preferences → Sync Settings and confirm it is on. The account setting is separate from the local app or device setting. Amazon warns that notes, highlights, and bookmarks made while account sync is off may be lost when it is turned back on; do not assume they can be recovered.
- Run a manual sync.
- In the mobile Kindle app, choose More → Sync now.
- On an e-reader, use the Sync icon or choose Sync and Check for Items from the menu; wording can vary by software version.
Wait for the sync to finish, then open the book on the other device and check the position. Amazon provides steps for syncing the mobile Kindle app and syncing a Kindle e-reader.
- Send the newest position from the device that is furthest ahead. Open the book there, connect to the internet, and sync. Then check the other device again.
Fix a Kindle book that is missing from another device
- Open Manage Your Content and Devices → Content → Books and look for the title. Amazon’s library troubleshooting guidance covers books that do not appear.
- If the book is listed, use the delivery option to send it to the target Kindle or app, then sync that device.
- If it was recently purchased, confirm the order completed payment before troubleshooting the device.
- In the Kindle library, select All and remove active filters so the title is not hidden by the current view.
If syncing still fails
Restart and update
Restart the Kindle or the device running the app, keep an e-reader charged, and install available Kindle software or app updates. Then reconnect and try a manual sync. If the issue concerns an audiobook paired with an e-book, Amazon’s separate Whispersync for Voice troubleshooting applies: the feature requires supported editions of both the e-book and audiobook. In that specific audio/e-book context, Amazon also suggests checking for an offered book update; removing a local download and redownloading it is a later troubleshooting step, not a first fix for ordinary e-book syncing.
Check Wi-Fi compatibility if the Kindle cannot connect
Wi-Fi capability varies by Kindle model. Amazon says Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi, and models released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz or WPA3. If your network uses an unsupported band or security setting, try a supported network. Amazon also recommends restarting the router and Kindle, updating device software, or testing a phone hotspot. See Amazon’s Kindle Wi-Fi connection guidance.
