KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (stop code 0x7A) means Windows could not read requested kernel data from the paging file into memory. The code does not identify one failed component: Microsoft lists bad disk sectors, defective storage hardware, failing RAM, and other hardware among possible causes. Work through these checks in order, using the crash’s error status and diagnostic results to decide what to do next.
If Windows still starts, copy important files somewhere safe before running intensive checks on a drive you suspect is failing. If it will not start, use the recovery option below for the documented disk-error scenario.

1. Record the full stop code and parameters
Note the stop code and any parameters displayed with the blue screen. The second parameter is commonly an I/O status code, which can help narrow the cause; the code alone is not enough to conclude that the drive has failed. Microsoft’s Bug Check 0x7A reference explains the parameters and their meanings.
If the screen disappears too quickly, look for crash details in Windows’ reliability or event records after restarting, if Windows remains accessible. Record the status exactly, including its hexadecimal digits.

2. Check whether the status points to disk errors
Some status values point more directly toward a read failure. Microsoft says 0xC000009C is typically associated with bad disk sectors, and 0xC000016A typically indicates that data could not be read because of a bad sector. By contrast, 0xC000009A can indicate insufficient nonpaged pool resources. Status meanings can depend on the other bug-check parameters and Windows version, so use Microsoft’s reference rather than diagnosing from the stop code alone.
3. Run CHKDSK for the documented bad-sector scenario
For the specified disk-error case, Microsoft recommends checking the system partition with chkdsk /f /r. The scan checks the file system and looks for bad sectors; Windows may schedule it to run after a restart.

- Plug & Play: Includes user guide and online technical support services. Plug it in and you are ready to go.
- Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Enter
chkdsk /f /rfor the system partition and follow any prompt to schedule the scan after restart. - Restart and allow the scan to finish. Avoid interrupting it unless there is an urgent reason to do so.
CHKDSK can address file-system errors and mark sectors Windows cannot use, but it cannot restore physically failing hardware. If the check reports errors that return, or the PC continues to crash, arrange a backup and move on to hardware diagnostics rather than treating the scan as proof the drive is healthy.

For the specified disk-error scenario when Windows cannot start, Microsoft’s instruction is to run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console. The exact way to enter Windows Recovery varies by device and how Windows was installed; use the recovery options available on your PC rather than assuming one key or menu path applies to every computer.

Once in a recovery command prompt, identify the Windows volume first: its drive letter may differ from the one Windows uses during normal startup. Microsoft’s cited instruction names chkdsk /r; do not assume the Windows partition is always C:.
5. Run the computer maker’s hardware diagnostics
Use diagnostics provided by your PC or motherboard manufacturer to test the hardware. The available tools and instructions differ by model. If a diagnostic reports a storage fault, consult the computer maker’s specifications before replacing a drive: compatible form factor and interface depend on the system.

6. Test memory with the manufacturer’s scanner
Microsoft specifically recommends the manufacturer’s memory scanner when failing RAM is suspected. Follow the instructions for your computer or memory maker, and note whether the test reports errors. A clean result does not by itself rule out every intermittent hardware fault, so consider it alongside crash recurrence and other diagnostic results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Review System Event Viewer for nearby clues
In Windows, open Event Viewer and inspect System events immediately before the crash time. Look for messages that identify a device or a storage or memory problem. An event near the crash can help focus troubleshooting, but timing alone does not prove that a particular device caused the stop error.

8. Install available Windows updates
If Windows starts, install available Windows updates and restart. Microsoft includes updating Windows among its blue-screen troubleshooting guidance. This is a reasonable software check, but it does not repair a failing drive or defective RAM.
9. Investigate other hardware when evidence supports it
Storage and RAM are not the only possibilities. Microsoft notes that other defective hardware, including a motherboard fault, can cause this bug check. If drive and memory checks do not explain recurring crashes, or the manufacturer’s diagnostics flag another component, seek model-specific service or a qualified repair assessment.
10. Check for malware when there is a reason to suspect it
Microsoft lists virus infection as a possible cause and advises checking with current antivirus software. Run a scan if you have other signs of malware or cannot explain the crashes after checking hardware. Malware is one possibility, not a reason to skip disk and memory diagnostics.

- Status suggests bad sectors: back up accessible files, then use the documented CHKDSK path appropriate to whether Windows starts.
- Memory diagnostics report errors: contact the computer maker or a repair service about the memory hardware.
- Storage diagnostics report failure: prioritize copying important data and confirm drive compatibility with the PC maker before considering replacement.
- Tests show no fault but crashes continue: compare crash times with System Event Viewer and seek hardware diagnosis; a single clean test does not establish that all components are sound.
Microsoft’s blue-screen troubleshooting guidance applies generally to Windows 10 and Windows 11. It describes stop errors as serious issues that can make Windows shut down or restart to help protect against data loss; it is not a dedicated 0x7A repair recipe.
