Choose only the access the feature needs: a map or nearby search may work while the app is open, while a feature that runs in the background may need background access.
1. Make sure Location Services is on
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and turn on Location Services if it is off. When this system-wide service is off, apps cannot get location through Location Services in the foreground or background, which can limit how they work. 2. Check the affected app’s permission
On the Location Services screen, tap the app that is having trouble. Select an option that fits the feature you are trying to use. The choices shown depend on the app; not every app offers every option.

Apple notes that an app with While Using permission may ask to use location in the background. If you approve background access, iOS may periodically remind you and show a map of the locations the app has used. Grant only the access needed for the feature. 3. Turn on Precise Location if the feature needs an exact position
On the affected app’s Location Services settings, turn on Precise Location if the feature needs your specific position. With it off, the app receives an approximate location. That can be sufficient for broad local information, but may not work for a feature that relies on a precise position. This setting controls how exact the location is; it does not change when the app may access it. Apple explains the setting in its Location Services instructions.
4. Retry the feature with the app open
- Return to the Home Screen and reopen the affected app.
- Keep it visible, then try the location-dependent feature again.
- If it works only while open but not in the background, check whether the app offers Always access and whether the feature actually needs background location.
Some features need location only during active use; others may need it in the background. A working foreground feature does not, by itself, mean background access is required.

5. Use Reset Location & Privacy only for broader permission trouble
If location permissions are persistently misconfigured across apps, you can reset them using Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. This is broader than changing one app’s setting: apps will stop using Location Services information until you grant permission again. Apple states, “When your location and privacy settings are reset, apps will stop using your Location Services information until you grant them permission.” Read Apple’s reset and privacy information before proceeding. This reset is not a guaranteed fix for a problem inside an individual app.
6. If the setting is right but the location still fails
Location symptoms are not always caused by a permission restriction. Apple says Location Services can use GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular, and Bluetooth inputs where available. GPS accuracy depends on visible satellites, and buildings or other obstructions can interfere. If the app has permission but reports a poor or unavailable position, try the feature in a location with a clearer view of the sky; also check that the iPhone’s date, time, and time zone are accurate. These conditions can affect location quality, but do not identify the cause of a particular app failure.

If the documented settings are correct and only one app’s feature remains broken, the next useful details are the app name, iOS version, and what happens when you try the feature. Contact the app’s developer for app-specific troubleshooting rather than granting broader access without a clear need.
