Across the fiscal years FY2016–17 to FY2025–26, UPI’s transaction count rose from about 2 crore to 24,161.69 crore, while transaction value increased from about ₹7,000 crore to ₹314.23 lakh crore, according to a 2026 New India Samachar feature. The feature describes those endpoint changes as nearly 12,000-fold in volume and more than 4,000 times in value. A separate IANS report citing Tracxn gives a different FY2025–26 total, so the figures need to be read with their sources attached.
What does “12,000-fold growth” mean?
The multiplier compares two fiscal-year endpoints, not every year in between: about 2 crore UPI transactions in FY2016–17 and 24,161.69 crore in FY2025–26. The New India Samachar feature calls that nearly 12,000-fold growth in volume. It also compares transaction value—about ₹7,000 crore at the start with ₹314.23 lakh crore at the end—and describes the increase as more than 4,000 times. These are approximate endpoint comparisons, not annual growth rates.

The feature says its series is based on Ministry of Finance data presented in the Lok Sabha in June 2026. Its figures use Indian numbering: 1 crore equals 10 million, and 1 lakh crore equals ₹1 trillion.

The New India Samachar feature’s annual figures show the scale and direction of growth from FY2021–22 onward. Transaction count and transaction value are separate measures: more transactions do not, by themselves, indicate how much money moved.

Why another report gives a different decade-end total
The FY2025–26 endpoint is not consistent across the cited reports. An April 10, 2026 IANS anniversary report citing analytics firm Tracxn puts the year at 218.98 billion transactions worth nearly ₹285 lakh crore. That is a distinct series from the New India Samachar feature’s 24,161.69 crore transactions and ₹314.23 lakh crore.

The reports should not be combined or treated as interchangeable. The available figures do not explain the discrepancy, so a decade-growth calculation should name the source series it uses rather than presenting one endpoint as an uncontested total.

What earlier RBI figures confirm
The Reserve Bank of India’s 2024 review reports 539 crore UPI transactions worth ₹8.8 lakh crore in FY2018–19, rising to 13,113 crore transactions worth ₹200 lakh crore in FY2023–24. The RBI’s FY2023–24 Annual Report separately records more than 13 billion UPI transactions in March 2024. These earlier figures document strong growth through FY2023–24; they do not establish which of the conflicting FY2025–26 endpoints is correct.

How UPI’s capabilities expanded
The RBI describes UPI as an open-loop payment system operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Alongside QR payments, the system gained or supported other use cases, including:
- UPI Lite X for offline payments using near-field communication (NFC);
- UPI 123Pay for feature-phone users; and
- conversational payments.
The RBI’s FY2023–24 Annual Report also notes UPI connectivity with Mauritius and Sri Lanka. These are developments in the system’s reach and functionality, not evidence that any particular feature caused the decade’s transaction growth.
