In Training Mode, turn on the input display and test your controller. If buttons and directions register late offline, troubleshoot the controller, display path, frame rate, drivers, and background applications. If offline play is immediate but online matches stutter, roll back, or teleport, troubleshoot Ethernet or Wi-Fi stability, router load, NAT, UPnP, and the opponent’s connection.
First, identify which kind of delay you have
Street Fighter can feel delayed for two different reasons. Local delay occurs between pressing a button and the game displaying the result on your own system. Online lag occurs when game-state data takes too long to travel between players or arrives inconsistently. They need different fixes, so changing router settings will not repair an unstable frame rate, and lowering graphics quality will not repair packet loss.

Test locally in Training Mode
- Open Training Mode while disconnected from matchmaking or before starting an online session.
- Enable the on-screen input display in the training options.
- Perform repeated single-button presses, directions, jumps, and special-move inputs.
- Watch whether the input display records the command immediately and whether the animation remains smooth.
If the input display itself records your command late, start with the controller or its connection. If the input appears immediately but the animation pauses or runs unevenly, investigate frame-time and graphics performance. If offline play is responsive and smooth, local hardware is less likely to be the cause; move to the online tests below.
Recognize online-only symptoms
Online problems usually appear as a match that feels different from Training Mode: characters may snap or teleport, attacks can appear to trade late, the game may show rollback corrections, or inputs may seem to disappear only during matches. Play several matches rather than judging from one opponent. A problem that occurs with one player but not others can involve the route or connection on the remote player’s side.

Fix local input delay on PC
Capcom’s PC troubleshooting guidance starts with the basics: confirm that the computer meets the game’s system requirements, install current video drivers and Windows updates, verify the Steam game files, and close other applications. These steps are intended to remove frame-time and software interference that can feel like delayed controls.
Stabilize frame time before changing network settings
- Update your graphics driver and Windows.
- In Steam, use the game’s properties menu to verify the integrity of the installed files.
- Close browsers, recording tools, overlays, downloads, and other applications that may consume CPU, GPU, memory, or disk time.
- Launch Street Fighter and open Options > Graphics.
- Set the graphics quality to Low or Lowest while testing. The goal is a consistently stable frame rate, not maximum visual quality.
- Play the same drills in Training Mode again with the input display visible.
A lower preset is a diagnostic step as well as a possible permanent setting. If controls become consistent at Low or Lowest, raise individual settings one at a time and retest. If the problem remains even when the frame rate is stable, investigate the controller and display path instead of continually lowering quality.
Choose the correct GPU and power mode on a dual-GPU laptop
Laptops with integrated and discrete graphics can launch the game on the lower-power GPU. Capcom recommends selecting the high-performance GPU for Street Fighter and using the operating system’s high-performance power plan. Apply both changes, restart the game, and repeat the same offline test. A laptop that switches power states during play can create uneven frame times even when its average frame rate appears adequate.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
- Reconnect a wired controller or fight stick directly and test again.
- If you normally use wireless, test a wired connection to distinguish wireless interference or battery issues from a game-performance problem.
- Try another known-good controller for a short test. This does not prove that the replacement is better; it simply identifies whether the original device or connection is involved.
- Close controller-mapping utilities and other software that may intercept inputs, then retest.
A wired fight stick or controller is a targeted accessory choice when offline testing points to the controller or wireless path. It cannot correct an unstable PC frame rate or lag caused by another player’s network.
Inspect the display path
If the input display changes immediately but the action appears late on screen, the controller may be working and the delay may be in rendering or the display path. Record the monitor or TV model and the HDMI connection details. Capcom asks for those details, along with CPU, GPU, driver version, and operating-system version, when players report persistent technical problems. Avoid assuming that a new cable or display will remove every type of delay; first establish whether the game is registering input and maintaining a stable frame rate.
Fix online lag and rollback problems
For online play, Capcom recommends a wired Ethernet connection. As Capcom states in its Street Fighter V Steam network guidance: A wired Ethernet connection is recommended when playing Street Fighter V online.
The recommendation is a baseline for Street Fighter networking generally: a cable avoids the interference, signal variation, and retransmissions that can occur over Wi-Fi.

- Connect an Ethernet cable from the console or PC directly to the router.
- Disable Wi-Fi on the gaming device so it uses the wired interface.
- Restart Street Fighter and play several matches against different opponents.
- Compare the result with the earlier Wi-Fi sessions, noting whether stutter, rollback, or disconnects changed.
Choose a cable with the connector required by your platform and make sure it is long enough to avoid strain or a loose plug. A cable improves the local link only; it cannot eliminate latency on the route to a remote player or compensate for that player’s unstable connection.

Reduce competing traffic
Temporarily disconnect or pause other devices that are streaming, downloading, uploading, backing up photos, or running large updates. Capcom specifically recommends disconnecting other devices while troubleshooting. Retest after the traffic stops, because a high-bandwidth connection can still suffer from queueing and packet loss when the router is busy.
Refresh the modem and router
- Exit Street Fighter and power off the modem and router.
- Wait briefly, then power the modem back on and allow it to reconnect.
- Power the router back on and wait until its network indicators settle.
- Reconnect the gaming system, confirm its network status, and test multiple matches.
This clears temporary router faults and stale sessions. It is a reversible test; if it has no effect, continue with NAT and platform checks rather than repeating reboots indefinitely.
Check NAT, UPnP, firewall, and platform networking
Capcom’s network guidance calls out strict NAT, UPnP, firewall settings, and platform networking. A strict NAT can make it difficult to establish or maintain peer connections. If your router supports UPnP, enable it according to the router’s documentation, then restart the router and platform and check the platform’s reported NAT type again. If you use a firewall, confirm that Street Fighter and the relevant platform services are allowed to communicate. Do not disable security software permanently; use the narrowest change that lets you test the connection.

Router menus differ by manufacturer, so the exact labels for UPnP and NAT status vary. Record the original settings before changing them. If enabling UPnP does not improve the result, return to the documented router configuration and continue testing other causes.

Do not confuse bandwidth with connection quality
Capcom notes that approximately 15–20 Mbps is often sufficient for online gaming, according to its 2026 guidance. That figure is a general bandwidth indication, not a latency guarantee or a requirement that makes every match stable. Congestion, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, NAT behavior, and the opponent’s route can still produce rollback or delay when a speed test reports a much higher download rate.
Use the symptom pattern to choose the next test
| Pattern after testing | Interpretation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Late inputs offline, improved after lowering graphics | Frame-time instability was contributing to the sensation of delay | Keep the stable preset or raise settings gradually while retesting |
| Late inputs offline on both wired and wireless controllers | Controller hardware is less likely; software, frame time, or display path needs attention | Verify files, close applications, update drivers, and collect display details |
| Offline is immediate; Wi-Fi matches are unstable | Local wireless conditions or router congestion are implicated | Use Ethernet and pause competing traffic |
| Ethernet helps, but some matches still roll back | The remaining issue may be the route or the other player’s connection | Test several opponents and record whether the problem is opponent-specific |
| Every opponent is affected after router restart | NAT, UPnP, firewall, platform networking, or an upstream service may be involved | Check NAT and UPnP status and preserve details for support |
| Only one opponent is affected | A remote connection path is a plausible explanation | Do not conclude that your controller, DNS, or cable is defective from that match alone |
Advanced checks that are worth doing—and those that are not guarantees
DNS changes
Changing DNS can alter how names are resolved, but Capcom does not publish a universal Street Fighter 6 latency guarantee for any particular DNS provider. A DNS change therefore should not be presented as a dependable fix for rollback or input delay. Test it only as a reversible network experiment, and keep the configuration that is stable for your wider internet use.
Port forwarding
Port forwarding can be relevant to a difficult NAT configuration, but Capcom’s published guidance supports checking NAT, UPnP, firewall, and platform networking rather than promising that a specific forwarding rule will eliminate lag. Incorrect forwarding can create security or connectivity problems. Prefer the router and platform documentation, and document every change so it can be undone.
Replacing a cable, monitor, or controller
Hardware changes should follow the offline/online diagnosis. A different controller or wired fight stick is sensible when the input display is late offline. A different monitor may be relevant when input registers immediately but the display path is slow. An Ethernet cable is sensible when Wi-Fi is unstable. None of these products can fix remote-player latency, a strict NAT configuration, or a PC that cannot maintain a stable frame rate.

What to record before contacting Capcom
If the issue persists after the basic tests, prepare a concise report rather than describing the problem only as “lag.” Include:
- Platform and game edition, including whether you are using the Steam PC version.
- CPU and GPU models.
- Video-driver version and operating-system version.
- Monitor or TV model and HDMI details.
- Whether Training Mode is delayed, whether the input display is late, and whether the frame rate is uneven.
- Whether matches are bad with every opponent or only particular opponents.
- Connection type (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), router status, NAT type, and whether UPnP is enabled.
- Any error code, disconnect message, or platform networking warning.
- Which steps changed the behavior, including graphics quality, controller connection, router reboot, and other-device disconnection.
This information lets support distinguish a rendering problem from a controller fault or a peer-network problem and avoids repeating tests you have already completed.
A practical order of operations
- Reproduce the problem offline in Training Mode with the input display visible.
- If offline input is delayed, reconnect or temporarily replace the controller, close background software, update Windows and drivers, verify Steam files, and lower Options > Graphics to Low or Lowest until frame time is stable.
- If offline play is responsive but online matches are poor, replace Wi-Fi with Ethernet and stop heavy traffic on other devices.
- Reboot the modem and router, then check NAT and UPnP status and confirm that firewall and platform networking are not blocking the game.
- Play several matches and record whether the problem is universal or opponent-specific.
- Send the platform, hardware, driver, display, connection, NAT, and error details to Capcom support if the issue remains.
This sequence keeps local performance tests separate from online-network tests, so each result narrows the cause instead of adding unrelated changes.
