If Hindi looks correct on a webpage but turns into empty boxes in its PDF, the failure is usually in the browser’s PDF export or the PDF’s font handling—not the text you see in the browser. Check whether the boxes also appear on the webpage, inspect the PDF’s fonts, then fix the font and shaping support in the part of the workflow that creates the file.
First find where the Hindi rendering fails
Compare the original webpage with the PDF. This separates the webpage’s text and font rendering from the browser’s print/export process and the resulting PDF’s font references.

- Hindi is boxes on both: Start with the webpage’s source text, font availability, and rendering.
- The webpage is correct but the PDF is not: Focus on the browser’s print-to-PDF renderer and the fonts referenced or embedded in the PDF.
- The PDF looks wrong but copied text is correct: This points toward a display or font issue, though the copy test alone cannot prove the cause.
- Copied text is also changed or missing: Check the source character encoding and the PDF’s text mappings as well as its fonts.
A box often means the selected font has no glyph for a character, but it is not a complete diagnosis. Devanagari also requires contextual shaping and positioning: consonant clusters, vowel signs, and diacritics must be composed and placed as script units. Check font references and embedding
In Adobe Acrobat, open File > Properties > Fonts. Review which fonts the PDF references and whether each is embedded. A missing or unsuitable Devanagari font is a reason to investigate font coverage and embedding. Anvil’s guide also describes this check: Fix Missing Characters and Boxes in Generated PDFs.

A PDF can name a font without containing the font data. The viewer may look for a local font with that name and otherwise substitute another font, with the result depending on the viewer. RFC 7995 recommends embedding fonts for consistent display and explains that PDF/A standards require font embedding; embedding does not, by itself, establish that Devanagari was shaped correctly. Compare copied text
Copy a short Hindi passage from the PDF into a plain-text editor and compare it with the webpage or original text. If the characters are correct despite boxes on screen, investigate rendering and font support. If characters are altered or absent, also investigate encoding and PDF character-to-text mappings. Treat this as a diagnostic clue, not proof of one specific fault.

Repair the webpage or browser export
If the webpage is already wrong
Fix the webpage’s text and rendering first. Make a Unicode font with coverage for the actual Hindi characters available to the page, and confirm that it supports Devanagari shaping. A font that merely contains individual character glyphs may still fail to render clusters, vowel signs, or diacritics correctly.
If only the PDF export is wrong
Make the Devanagari-capable font available to the actual print/PDF rendering process, not just a developer’s computer or a browser preview. Confirm that the font covers the text and can be embedded under its license when embedding is needed. Then export a new PDF and inspect its fonts again.

If you control the browser or export setup, try the same page in another supported browser or PDF export path to determine whether the failure is specific to one renderer. Compare the resulting files; do not assume that changing viewers will repair an already-created PDF whose font references or character mapping are defective.
Repair PDFs generated by code or an application
Check the chosen PDF library’s support for complex-script shaping in the exact configuration you use. Do not assume that every library automatically handles paragraph layout or Devanagari shaping. Apache PDFBox describes itself as a low-level PDF library and notes that it does not itself provide high-level paragraph layout, automatic wrapping, or tables; see its 3.0 FAQ.

- Confirm that the input contains the intended Unicode Hindi characters.
- Use a font with the required Devanagari coverage and shaping support, and verify that the PDF generator can use it.
- Check the font’s embedding permissions and configure embedding where required.
- Generate a fresh PDF, inspect its font list and embedding status, and compare visible Hindi with the original.
Installing a font after the PDF was created is not a dependable repair if the file already has defective font references or character mappings. Fix the source or generation settings and export again.
Validate the repaired PDF
- Open the new file in another PDF viewer or on another device where practical.
- Check ordinary letters, conjuncts, vowel signs, and diacritics—not just a short, simple word.
- Test copy and paste if the text needs to remain selectable or reusable.
- For archival or interchange workflows, evaluate PDF/A requirements. Font embedding is required by PDF/A standards, but conformance alone does not prove that every script was shaped correctly.
