At minimum, preserve the entire mods folder, the current modsupdateupdate.rpf, your custom dlclist.xml, gameconfig.xml, ASI plugins and script folders. Copy them to a separate internal drive or an optional portable external SSD or hard drive. Storage choice is a budget decision; the important point is that the backup must not be inside the same game directory that a launcher can repair or overwrite.

RAGE Plugin Hook and LSPDFR

RAGE Plugin Hook and LSPDFR can require their own compatible releases after a title update. Check their release notes against the same Legacy/Enhanced edition and build. Keep this check separate from Script Hook V: one loader being current does not prove that another is. If you run both script systems, test them independently so an error from one is not attributed to the other.

Do not treat rollback as the routine answer

Reverting GTA V can be difficult and unsupported because launcher behavior may force files or builds to change again. Consider a rollback only when the relevant tool documentation explicitly supports it and you have a complete backup; waiting for a compatible hook is usually the less destructive path. Confirm the overlay contains the expected paths

Open the edition’s mods folder and verify that the paths used by your mods exist there, such as modsupdateupdate.rpf. A clean main-game archive does not prove that the overlay is working; the redirected copy is what archive mods use. Check common locations for vehicle, peds, weapons and DLC archives, and compare their names with your mod manager’s list.

Launch once with a minimal, known-good archive mod. If it appears, the redirector works and the missing item is likely a disabled or incompatible mod. If nothing appears, return to the edition path and loader checks instead of rebuilding every archive.

4. Repair crashes caused by an old update.rpf

OpenIV’s mods folder is an overlay: files in it can override the updated files in the main installation. Rockstar updates replace the main game archive, but the copied archive in modsupdateupdate.rpf can remain from an older build. The game then loads a mixture of old and new data, leading to startup crashes or corrupt-data messages.

Refresh the archive without losing custom work

1. Close the game and launcher.
2. Back up the entire modded installation or at minimum the existing modsupdateupdate.rpf, your custom dlclist.xml, and any other files you changed.
3. Record every custom line you added to dlclist.xml and save copies of edited archives or XML files outside the game directory.
4. Compare the main installation’s new update.rpf with the copy under modsupdate. Check file dates and sizes, but do not assume matching size alone proves compatibility.
5. Replace the stale modded archive with a copy matching the current game build, using your mod manager or archive tool as appropriate.
