If a Google Sheets formula changes or gives an unexpected result after you add a row or column, first inspect the formula’s actual references. The usual fixes are to extend a range that stops too soon, lock references that should not move when copied, or clear space for an array result. For structured data that grows, a table reference can follow its named columns.
Check whether the formula still covers the intended data
Select the formula cell and inspect the formula bar. While you edit a formula, Sheets highlights its referenced cells; compare those highlights and the range in the formula with the data you expect it to use. Google Sheets may also offer a formula correction suggestion. Treat it as a suggestion, not proof: check that the proposed range includes the intended inputs and produces the expected result before accepting it. Google’s guide to formulas and functions explains formula editing and corrections.

A bounded range such as A2:A100 includes only the rows up to its stated endpoint. If new records are added beyond row 100, the formula may calculate without an error while leaving those records out. An open range such as A:A can include future rows, but Google notes that open ranges may require more calculation work in large sheets. Google’s guidance on data references and performance covers that trade-off.

Use a table reference for structured data
If your data has a consistent structure and named column headers, convert it to a Google Sheets table and refer to a column by name. Google’s example replaces =SUM(C2:C7) with =SUM(DeptSales[Sales Amount]). Google says references to table elements update when data is added to or removed from the table. This is a useful choice when a formula should follow a growing table rather than a manually bounded block. See Google’s table-reference documentation.

- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
Table references depend on a table and its column headers, so they are not a universal substitute for cell ranges. Google documents limitations for their use in conditional formatting, charts, and pivot tables.
Use an open or bounded range deliberately
- Open range, such as
A:A: includes future rows in that column, but may add calculation work in a large sheet. - Bounded range, such as
A2:A100: gives a defined start and endpoint, but needs to be extended if the data grows past that endpoint.
Choose based on whether the dataset is expected to grow and how large the sheet is; neither reference style is automatically right for every formula.

Fix formulas that move when copied
When you copy a formula, relative references shift according to the destination cell. Add dollar signs to the coordinates that should stay fixed:
$A$1locks both the column and row.$A1locks the column but lets the row change.A$1locks the row but lets the column change.
Pick the form that matches the direction and pattern in which you copy the formula. Reference locking controls movement during copying; it does not make a bounded data range expand when new records are appended. Google also discusses absolute references in its Sheets performance guidance.

Use an array formula when one formula should fill multiple cells
An array formula can return values across multiple rows or columns. For example:
=ARRAYFORMULA(A1:C1+A2:C2)
Google notes that many array formulas expand into neighboring cells automatically, so an explicit ARRAYFORMULA wrapper is not always necessary. See Google’s ARRAYFORMULA help.

Array results need room to expand. If a formula should fill a column, inspect the cells below it—and to its right where relevant—for existing content that would block the result. Google explains how array results can spill into neighboring cells in its guide to arrays in Sheets.

Verify the result after inserting a row or column
- Select the affected formula cell and inspect the formula bar and highlighted references.
- Compare the referenced range with the rows or columns the calculation is meant to include. Extend a bounded range if necessary, or choose a suitable alternative.
- If the formula was copied, check whether any relative reference shifted when it should have stayed fixed; add dollar signs to the appropriate coordinates.
- If the formula returns multiple cells, check that the output area is clear so the result can expand.
- Check the outcome against a known input or independently calculate a small sample when the result matters. A visible error is not the only warning sign: a formula can return a plausible value while excluding newly added data.
