No—not if you mean keeping personal data entirely from Meta. Meta says Muse keeps conversations and virtual-machine data out of its advertising systems, but it still processes data to operate the service and says interaction data is used to train models by default unless you opt out. You can limit connected-app access and training use; those controls do not make Muse data-free or guarantee that Meta cannot access it.
What “sharing personal data” means with Muse
There are several different privacy questions here: whether Meta processes your data to run Muse, whether your interactions are used for model training, whether data enters ad systems, and whether connected apps expose information to the agent. The answers differ.

- Service operation: Muse uses a dedicated virtual machine (VM) to hold user data and agent activity. Meta says its standard setup does not prevent access by Meta personnel when needed to support, secure, or operate the service. Meta’s security description therefore is not a promise that Meta cannot access your data.
- Advertising: Meta says conversations and VM data are not shared with Meta’s ad systems. That is narrower than saying the service does not process personal data. Meta also notes that use of Muse can indirectly influence ads—for example, a merchant you visit through Muse may later show you an Instagram ad.
- Model training: Meta says conversations, tool calls, and agent handoffs—called “trajectories”—are used for training by default after sanitization. It says this sanitization removes key personally identifiable information, but that does not mean the data is never collected or processed.
- Connected services: If you connect an app, Muse may access the information or capabilities you authorize. You can limit or revoke that access, but connecting fewer services is a separate choice from opting out of training.
Meta’s privacy and security statements are vendor claims, not independent audit findings.

Turn off training use
Meta says the training opt-out is a switch in Muse settings. Because training use is on by default according to Meta and Axios, locate the training control and switch it off if you do not want your interactions used for model training. Meta says trajectories are sanitized before training; the sources do not independently verify the sanitization method or its effectiveness. Axios’s report also describes training use as enabled by default and says users can turn it off.
Limit connected-app access
When connecting an app, choose the least access that supports what you want Muse to do. Meta gives email as an example: you can allow reading without allowing Muse to send messages. You can change access or disconnect a service later. Meta says Muse asks before sensitive actions such as sending email or making a purchase, and provides an audit trail of activity. Meta’s Muse announcement describes these controls; they are not a guarantee that permissions work correctly in every environment.

Review or remove remembered details
Meta says users can inspect, edit, and download files in the VM, including Muse’s memory about them, and can tell Muse to forget specific learned details. Removing a memory is not the same as deleting all service data or changing the training setting.

What the VM does—and does not—protect
Meta says Muse’s agent and user data run in a dedicated VM. Files placed there and material Muse generates or uses for you are stored in that environment. Connected-service credentials and authentication tokens are kept in a separate isolated container within the VM, rather than in other Meta services, and Meta says VM data is backed up continuously.

Isolation is not the same as provider-inaccessible encryption. Meta explicitly says standard Muse VM isolation does not prevent access when necessary to support, secure, or operate the service. If your requirement is that Meta cannot access your data, the standard Muse setup described by Meta does not meet it.
Is Confidential VM available?
Meta described a planned Confidential VM in which the VM—including conversations and personal data—would be encrypted with a key held only by the user. In its security article, Meta said a small group of trusted testers was using the system while it gathered auditor feedback and prepared a public continuous audit. Its launch announcement said it planned the feature for later in 2026. The official material reviewed does not establish that Confidential VM is generally available as of October 4, 2026. Check Muse’s current settings and Meta’s latest announcement before relying on it.

A reported permissions concern to keep in mind
On September 30, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported journalist Jason Aten’s account that Muse suggested a topic linked to a private Messages conversation. Aten said he had not given Muse permission to read his messages or full disk access on his Mac; the report said further investigation found Muse syncing a local Messages database. This is a reported incident involving one user, not proof that every Muse installation behaves this way. The report does not establish a subsequent fix. It is a reason to review current permissions and connected services rather than assume controls have worked as intended. Read Tom’s Hardware’s report.
