How to Fix Ghosting and VA Smearing on the Samsung Odyssey G5

Start by identifying the exact Odyssey G5 model, then test the highest stable refresh rate, Response Time (overdrive) modes, and FreeSync/VRR separately. If dark trails remain in every valid combination, you are seeing the VA panel’s response limit rather than a loose cable or a software fault. On the 27-inch Odyssey G55C (S27CG55), independent testing found blurry motion and noticeable smearing at every refresh rate, with motion becoming worse when VRR was enabled.

What ghosting and VA smearing look like

Ghosting is a visible trail behind a moving object because the pixels have not reached their new brightness before the object moves on. VA smearing is the especially dark form of this problem: a black or gray object leaves a smeared shadow in dark scenes, games and scrolling content. RTINGS explains that VA panels typically have slower response times in dark transitions than IPS and TN panels, which causes black smearing. This is a panel-response behavior, not automatically a defective cable, graphics driver or game setting.

Two artifacts can appear when you change the monitor’s overdrive setting. With too little overdrive, pixels change slowly and leave ordinary trails. With too much, pixels are driven past their target and then settle back, producing a bright halo or corona around moving objects. That artifact is called inverse ghosting or overshoot. Overdrive can change how visible the transition is, but it cannot change the panel’s fundamental response capability; RTINGS states that a monitor’s response time cannot be changed.

Identify your exact Odyssey G5 before changing settings

Samsung has sold several monitors under the Odyssey G5 name. Their refresh limits, inputs, menus and firmware are not interchangeable. Read the full model code from the rear label, the on-screen information page or the Samsung support page before applying a setting or firmware file.

Model information What is established Why it matters
Samsung Odyssey G55C S27CG55 RTINGS’ 2025 retest describes a 27-inch, 2560×1440, 1000R-curved VA monitor with a 165Hz maximum refresh rate and FreeSync variable refresh rate. Its measured motion behavior and supported MBR modes are specific to this model.
Samsung Odyssey G50F Samsung’s UK product page, crawled in 2026, advertises 180Hz and 1ms GtG. An advertised specification does not establish clean dark-scene motion, and its menu or port limits may differ from the G55C.
Other G5 sizes and generations Not stated by the cited testing. Do not copy the G55C’s refresh, MBR or firmware instructions without checking the model manual.

Use this troubleshooting order

Make one change at a time and watch the same moving object or test scene after each change. A dark game corridor, a high-contrast scrolling page and a moving test pattern reveal different artifacts. Keep the frame rate as similar as possible when comparing settings.

  1. Record the model and connection. Write down the model code, screen size, input (DisplayPort or HDMI), graphics card or console, current resolution, refresh rate and whether FreeSync is active. This prevents a setting intended for one G5 generation from being applied to another.
  2. Select the highest stable refresh rate. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and choose the monitor’s highest mode that is actually available and stable. In a GPU control panel, select the same native resolution and maximum supported refresh. On a console, use its display or video-output menu. The G55C is specified at up to 165Hz in the cited 2025 testing; another G5 may have a different limit. A higher refresh rate reduces the time each frame remains visible and usually improves perceived motion, but it does not make the VA pixels themselves switch faster.
  3. Confirm the setting is really applied. Reopen the operating system’s advanced display page or the GPU information panel and verify the active refresh rate. A cable, adapter, duplicated-display mode or console setting can silently leave the monitor at 60Hz or another lower mode. Do not judge ghosting until the intended mode is confirmed.
  4. Test Response Time modes individually. Open the monitor’s on-screen display and locate Response Time, Overdrive or a similarly named control. Test each available level at the same refresh rate while viewing motion. Use the least-trailing mode that does not create bright halos. If the fastest option produces white or colored edges, step back one level; that is inverse ghosting rather than an improvement.
  5. Compare FreeSync or other VRR states. Turn FreeSync off, keep the refresh rate and frame rate comparable, and repeat the same motion test. Then turn it on and test again. VRR can remove tearing when frame rates fluctuate, but it can also alter overdrive behavior. In RTINGS’ G55C testing, motion was worse with VRR enabled than disabled. Keep VRR enabled only when its tear reduction is more valuable to you than the added blur; otherwise use a fixed refresh mode.
  6. Check the cable and port path. Connect the monitor directly to the graphics card or console with a known-good DisplayPort or HDMI cable. Try the intended monitor input rather than an unverified adapter, dock or switch. Select the correct input in the monitor menu and verify that the connection can deliver the resolution and refresh you selected. Do not assume another G5 model has the same bandwidth or port behavior.
  7. Reset conflicting monitor settings. If several adjustments have accumulated, use the monitor’s Reset or Factory Reset command, then set resolution, refresh, Response Time and VRR again in a controlled order. This removes an unknown combination of contrast, eye-care or gaming presets that may obscure the comparison without changing the panel response.
  8. Update only the matching firmware. Samsung Support Canada lists firmware M-C5500GGZA version 1008.3, dated September 12, 2025, for the S27CG550ENXZA support page. Download and apply firmware only when the full model code matches. A file for a different G5 can fail to install or create a separate problem. Follow Samsung’s supplied update procedure and do not interrupt power during the process.
  9. Test Motion Blur Reduction when available. On the G55C guide, Extreme (MBR) is listed only at 165Hz over DisplayPort or 144Hz over HDMI. Enable it only in one of those supported combinations, then compare motion clarity and flicker. Backlight strobing can reduce persistence blur by flashing the backlight between refreshes, but it does not speed up the VA transition that causes dark smearing. It can also flicker and may be unsuitable for long sessions or users sensitive to flicker.
  10. Recheck in more than one scene. A bright moving object on a light background may look clean while a dark transition still smears. Test both. If the same dark trail appears at the highest stable refresh, with every sensible Response Time level, with VRR on and off, and through a valid direct connection, treat it as an intrinsic response limitation.

How to choose the Response Time setting

There is no universal best setting for every Odyssey G5. Overdrive is tuned for a particular refresh range, while VRR causes the refresh rate to move through a range. A mode that looks acceptable at the monitor’s maximum refresh can overshoot at a lower frame rate. Use a moving image at the refresh and frame rate you normally play, not a static specification.

  • Visible dark trail, no bright edge: try the next stronger overdrive level and retest.
  • White, colored or sharply bright halo: the setting is too aggressive; select a slower level.
  • Clean at fixed refresh but poor with VRR: compare VRR off against each available overdrive level. The G55C’s independent results show that VRR can make motion worse, so this behavior is not proof that your cable is bad.
  • No meaningful difference between modes: the panel’s dark-transition speed may be the dominant limit.

FreeSync: keep it or disable it?

FreeSync synchronizes the display’s refresh to the graphics device’s frame output within the monitor’s supported range, reducing tearing and some judder. It does not inherently eliminate ghosting. The G55C review measured worse motion with VRR enabled than disabled, so make the choice based on your priority:

Your priority Starting choice What to verify
Competitive motion clarity and you can maintain a stable frame rate Test fixed refresh with VRR off. Check for tearing and confirm that the selected refresh remains active.
Tear-free play with fluctuating frame rates Test FreeSync on. Compare dark trails at the same frame-rate range; retain VRR only if the tear reduction outweighs blur.
Mixed games and desktop use Keep a profile for each use. Record the Response Time and VRR state that you prefer instead of assuming one setting is optimal everywhere.

Cables, ports and firmware: what they can and cannot fix

A faulty or bandwidth-limited connection can force a lower refresh rate, cause signal dropouts or prevent a selected mode from being used. A direct, known-good cable and the correct monitor input are therefore essential checks. They will not, however, make a VA panel’s dark transitions inherently faster. If the monitor is demonstrably running its selected resolution and refresh without dropouts, persistent dark trails after the settings tests point away from the cable.

Firmware can correct implementation issues, but an update is not a guarantee of a different response-time result. Match the firmware to the exact model code. For the S27CG550ENXZA support page, Samsung lists M-C5500GGZA version 1008.3 dated September 12, 2025. Owners of another G5 should use that model’s support page and manual rather than this file.

When MBR helps—and when it does not

Motion Blur Reduction (MBR), also called backlight strobing, reduces the time your eyes see each frame. That can make a moving edge look sharper even when the pixel transition itself is unchanged. The G55C guide’s Extreme (MBR) option is restricted to 165Hz over DisplayPort or 144Hz over HDMI. If your connection or model does not support the required combination, the option may be unavailable.

MBR commonly trades brightness and convenience for clarity. It can flicker, may be uncomfortable for flicker-sensitive viewers, and generally conflicts with VRR on many monitors. Treat it as an optional clarity mode, not a cure for black smearing. Compare it with ordinary fixed-refresh operation in the games you actually play.

What the G55C testing means for expectations

RTINGS’ 2025 retest of the Samsung Odyssey G55C S27CG55 describes a 27-inch 1440p 1000R VA monitor with 165Hz refresh and FreeSync. Its conclusion is unusually important for troubleshooting: the monitor had a bad response time at any refresh rate, with blurry motion and noticeable smearing behind fast-moving objects. The test also found motion worse with VRR enabled. Those findings do not prove that every Odyssey G5 behaves identically, but they establish that settings cannot always eliminate the effect on this model.

Samsung’s newer G50F page advertises 180Hz and 1ms GtG. That is a manufacturer specification for that model, not an independent measurement of dark-transition performance. A nominal 1ms figure should therefore not be used as evidence that a G5 will show no black smearing. Measured dark-transition response, overshoot, VRR behavior and the actual refresh available through your input are more useful comparisons.

When replacement is the practical fix

Consider replacement when all of the following are true:

  • The exact model is identified and the monitor is running its highest stable supported refresh.
  • A direct, known-good DisplayPort or HDMI connection has been verified.
  • Response Time modes have been compared without accepting bright overshoot as an improvement.
  • VRR has been tested both on and off at a comparable frame rate.
  • Any exact-model firmware update has been applied according to Samsung’s instructions.
  • MBR, if supported, either flickers, is unavailable in your preferred mode or does not address the dark trail.

At that point, replacing the display is the durable way to obtain faster motion. Settings can reduce the visibility of trails or trade them for overshoot; they cannot rewrite the VA panel’s response characteristics. If you compare another monitor, look for independent measurements of dark-transition response and overshoot, behavior with VRR enabled, maximum refresh at your required resolution and input, the quality of its backlight-strobing implementation, and the seller’s return and warranty terms. Do not compare products only by an advertised 1ms number.

A model-specific checklist for the 27-inch G55C

  1. Confirm that the label identifies the S27CG55 family and note whether you use DisplayPort or HDMI.
  2. Set 2560×1440 at 165Hz if your device and cable support that mode.
  3. Test each Response Time option with a dark moving scene; reject any mode that creates a bright corona.
  4. Repeat with FreeSync disabled, then enabled, keeping the frame-rate range comparable.
  5. If using DisplayPort, test Extreme (MBR) at 165Hz; if using HDMI, the guide lists it at 144Hz. Check for flicker and comfort.
  6. Verify the active mode after every change. If dark smearing persists through these tests, regard it as the G55C’s measured panel limitation rather than a setting you have missed.

Bottom line

Use the highest stable refresh rate, choose the least-trailing Response Time mode without inverse-ghosting halos, and compare FreeSync on and off. Check the direct cable path and exact-model firmware, and use MBR only in the supported modes if flicker is acceptable. On the G55C, independent testing shows that dark smearing can remain at every refresh rate and may worsen with VRR. When those controlled tests leave the trails unchanged, replacement—not another software tweak—is the only reliable way to get faster dark-scene motion.
